I remember when I was a kid I played Pokemon on my PC on this really old emulator. I remember it had the Super Gameboy colors and it didn't play GBA games. It also didn't have a windows frame like pic related, once you started the emulator it entered full screen and you selected roms inside the emulator.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm speculating it's a DOS emulator but the only one I know of that was like that was VGB and I can't find screenshots of it. I completely forgot about it until earlier today.

Wait, is there an "illegal" way of emulating? here is the thing, back then there was this loophole or whatever you may call it, I can buy the games but I am in no way obligated to play them on the console (Bleemcast vs Sony.)

I cannot see the appeal. Every time I have played it I get a handful of mons and dispatch them so they can counter whatever they're fighting and one hit kill every time. Where is the fun? I have no idea why everyone defaults to pokemon whenever they emulate game boys. Sure it's the biggest name title but it isn't good. I played Riviera the Promised Land a shittonne and enjoyed that when I was emulating GBA. Probably the most complex gameboy game I've ever played. Haven't played many though.

If you pirate the software and emulate that then technically it's illegal, but it's more a piracy violation then one of emulation.
Also downloading a BIOS file is technically illegal, but there's also the massive grey area where technically bios files in general would be identical to each other so legally they could never prove that you didn't rip your own BIOS file, which despite how badly companies want it to be, isn't illegal.

I was there when the emulation scene began, back in the 90s. Everyone in IRC was kissing this one dev's ass up and down because he made an emu he called VirtualSuperMagicom. The damn thing didn't work, but it could, kind of show a rom's intro, though it was corrupted to fuck and ran at maybe 1 FPS. Then that one faggot Marat released iNES and tried to charge people for it, and the fucking thing couldn't run at full speed. Then vNES (I think that's what it was called) was released for DOS and did run roms at full speed.
I learned that emulation was here to stay, and that there was no upper limit to which sycophants would virtually suck some dev's dick in order to curry favor.

To be honest that it is a good thing for emulation really. Open source faggots take years to do anything(take PCSX2 10 years and it is still shit) and they pitch a fit if you say anything with such gems as
>I have a life
>Make your own then
But even if you try to fork their shit they will pitch a fit about that as well, "their project" is what they mean. Open source rules don't mean much to them.
Where as a project funded on patreon gets better every month. And the Devs have to be upfront with most people.

I don't really keep up with the dev drama and shit anymore, just the end product, so I'll take your word for it. The funniest thing was that when someone actually paid for iNES and then released it for everyone to download, the dev threatened legal action even though the NES was still somewhat alive at that point and he didn't have a legal leg to stand on. Funny shit.

Yes, I remember distinctly being a poorfag 14 year old and finding out about VBA, PJ64, ZSNES, epsxe, Nestopia, Fusion, and doing what everyone did at the time - seeing how far they could go. Trying out Xeon, PCSX2, Dolphin, Yabause, NullDC, Chankast and Reicast, finding out none of the latter ones worked well at all, just playing 2D games or at best PS1, rediscovering original hardware and how much better it is years down the line, rediscovering how good CRTs looked, and so far I never looked back. Interesting how that all works.

I'm pretty sure nesticle was the first fairly functional NES emulator. It was the only NES emulator my computer could run at the time.
This thread reminded me of how when pokemon came out kids at school were exchanging floppy disks with pokemon and a gameboy emulator. I don't recall the name of the emulator but it had a purple GBC as an icon. I got a copy of one too but the problem was that it didn't save, so I had to start my games from scratch every time I played. I went through the intro of pokemon TCG so many times that the whole thing has been burned into my mind. Finally getting an emulator that could save was such a big deal.

I certainly remember using an early version of dolphin in 2010 or so that barely ran Mario Sunshine. The only audio was in the cutscenes but even then it skipped and glitched heavily. As far as I remember it ran at like 20-25 FPS, but I think that was probably more down to me only being able to find the PAL version online rather than an emulator or hardware issue. I wonder if dolphin will still run on a core 2 quad?
