A data center can't shove more compute or memory per unit of space than the average gayman pc, or run it more power efficiently, or obtain the hardware any cheaper than the consumer. And the necessary investment to properly handle peak concurrent demand for a AAA release would bankrupt all but the most deep-pocketed companies which would still look on such a division as a liability.

The one dude running a server farm out of his basement, or the small business struggling to make ends meet can't "shift funds", and if you go much higher on the ladder, you're no longer talking about an "independent" entity. I agree that being supported directly by users is a good alternative, but realize that you're now referring to another self-reliance strategy, and historically, that one hasn't proven to be very reliable. I've watched many, MANY websites die over the years because their userbase wasn't interested enough to support them. Yes, it works for some websites, and I think it's great that those websites can remain ad-free as a result of their userbase, but getting to and maintaining that status can be very very VERY difficult if you can't carve out a specific niche. In order to get donations (or purchases or subscriptions), you have to keep site traffic up by providing services that keep people constantly coming back, like forums or submitted content, which can require hiring staff like moderators, coders, pentesters, etc. Some of these can be volunteer, which saves money, but then you have to deal with the possibility of incompetence and drama, both of which will drive users away. Some people can pull it off, and I respect those people greatly, but it favors a specific kind of website, and is not at all reliable in the way ads are. An advertisement provides website income simply by existing, and is proportional to the number of visitors; a large website will receive large revenue and vice versa. This simple system allows so many websites to exist. I'm not saying I LIKE the system, I'm just saying that if you were to get rid of it, you create more problems than you'd solve.

I disagree about the Vita. It had some great games and exclusives worth getting. Even now.

Other than that, yeah, the rest of your list was on point. A lot of dumb companies think they can just waltz right into the console business with NO good first-party/second-party/exclusive games to back it up. Super Mario Bros 1 was what made the NES sell like hotcakes. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 did the same for the Genesis. As did FF7 and Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation. And even Halo 1 for the original Xbox. Without a good exclusive system seller, your console is dead in the water. And if it's a PC thing like Steam machines, it never stood a chance against custom PC rigs to begin with.

I mean. What IPs does Google even have to be system sellers, honestly? None last I checked.
