I just finished Silent Hill 2 and holy shit was it a ride. I understand the praise it gets. The atmosphere and story are really great and the letter at the end got me. My favorite place was the Lakeview Hotel, it reminds me of Michigan. I'm looking forward to playing the third game, and then Cry of Fear after. Talk about Silent Hill here.

I personally really enjoyed it. It's got jump scares out the ass, but it really scratches an itch I've had for a long time. That is, that it's a survival horror game proper with save locations, item management, combat, and decent length with some good setpiece scares along the way. It's a really solid experience except for the motherfucking train segment about three quarters of the way in. That part can go die in a fire.
As for Silent Hill 2…yeah. I mean, it's heralded as one of the best horror games ever for a reason. Story, tone, atmosphere, restraint…it's legitimately amazing just how goddamn good that game is when considering Team Silent was originally conceived as a team of rejects that didn't do well on other projects in the company. Perhaps survival horror was their calling.

Dude you need to play SH1 before 3, the graphics are ugly and controls are clunky but it's a direct sequel and still a great game if you don't mind those two things. It's also by far my favorite Silent Hill, often SH2 fans will shit on it because the plot is not as deep, but I still think is great, and it's the only game that ever managed to make me actually feel nervous and somewhat scared. Call it atmosphere or whatever you want but it has some eeriness that was lost as the series went on.
I'm not saying that I don't like Silent 2. I absolutely love the first 4 games and Silent Hill is my favorite series of all times, but I do think SH2 might be a bit overrated and just prefer the first game.

In SH2 since it's all about the characters there is very little need for coherent or interesting background for anything else, and what there is is borrowed from the cult storyline anyway. I dunno, as I understood it the manifestations that Henry faced were Alessa's, not his. Even if that's not the case, the fact that it's been pretty much established by the devs as the series went on makes it canon, even if retroactively and very tangentially.
Silent Hill 1 is my favourite. Henry is unique to the series in that SH1 not entirely about him, he's more a means to an end for multiple parties. I think that's what makes his story so good. It's fear based on pure confusion over being sucked into something you never asked for.

Health management, checking the knife, listening to the optional doctor's conversation, handling Maria in different ways - it all counts for your ending. I got Leave at first since I tend to heal as soon as I hit gray (since health drinks are frequent, just like in SH1) and also because I got rid of Maria as soon as I could in the hospital because I didn't want monsters to end up killing her (granted, it takes a lot of hits for that to happen. SH4 is a really solid survival horror, but it definitely doesn’t feel like a Silent Hill game aside from the subtle psychology going on with the horror.
It also hit a real personal note with me as I played it at a time when I was developing agoraphobia and it captured a lot of the feelings that came with that. The way Henry passively and awkwardly dealt with the people he met was pretty damn good writing, and the desperation the game made you feel wanting to reach out to people just outside your apartment, but being secluded from them… like I said, deep stuff.

It somewhat steers you into being sympathetic towards James (not overtly, but it indirectly does by showing you his side of the story and putting you in control of him) so they might hate that, but it's a story about the evil white man ending his wife's life for selfish (at least in some of the endings) reasons. Also the tragic female rape victim is also there, and Maria is the perfect vehicle for them to hate on male sexuality since she was conceived to represent James' sexual desires. The most innocent characters in the story are women (Laura, Jame's wife, Angela) and all the men in the story are evil "oppressors". It's just really really perfect for them to latch on and use for feminist propaganda if you think about it.
