I'm sick of everything, anyone up for a horror game thread?

>What have you been playing?

>Got anything interesting recently?

>Hype for something?

>Jumpscares yes/no?

>Are suitwalkers scary?

>Is doki doki literature club any good?

I just beat Obscure, a Silent Hill like game with weird co-op mechanics (played it alone though) and music from fucking Sum 41. It was decent, pretty short and easy, even on hard difficulty. Still worth a play imo.

I've been also playing Realms of the Haunting and Parasite eve. First one is an old school fps/survival horror with weird controls, funny FMVs and great atmosphere, can't really say much 'cause haven't played a lot but looks like a lot of fun. P. Eve is cool, a weird mix of JRPG and survival horror, made in Square's golden era, it's cool, go play it.

DDLC is a rom-com where the comedy is black comedy.

>What a comfy old atmosphere. How do they manage that?

I don't know bro, it really stood up to me, wish more games would be like that. Being inside the mansion reminds me a lot of the first part of Clive Barker's Undying, although it came after.

>>15088371

>DDLC is a rom-com where the comedy is black comedy

That's too bad, what's with the hype though? Is it just streamer bait?

a0d19a No.15088436

>What have you been playing?

Not much. Too many horror games rely on the "a narrow FOV and too much camera shake means it's scary!" bullshit, and both those things give me motion sickness.

>Got anything interesting recently?

Last semi-decent game I played was Vaccine, and even then it was because I cheesed the fuck out of the game, not because the game was any good.

Pumping all stat points in to speed means you can use nothing but a knife for most of your runs.

>Hype for something?

RE2make if they actually have fixed cameras as an option.

>Jumpscares yes/no?

Yes, but only when actually done well, with the proper build-up and tension and foreshadowing.

>Are suitwalkers scary?

Yes, but again, only when done well. I don't think I've played a game where they've been done well. Unfortunately skinwalkers/shapeshifters are ruining the industry at the moment, so the horror is REAL.

>Is doki doki literature club any good?

No idea, it's on the to-do list but like anything that gets too popular I get sick of hearing about it before I even get around to playing/watching it myself.

They hype is that it looks and starts off as a normal ass VN, then it ramps up with some kills and gets very meta and self aware. Its edgy enough in a good way to justify playing if only to laugh at the memes afterwords. I would recommend it personalty. Just don't go into it expecting to be horrified unless you are a normalfag who gets horrified at stuff that most people who like horror would laugh at. Go into it expecting to laugh.

DDLC is trash, because:

main bitch dies no matter which option you pick. if you say you love her, she dies, and if you friendzone her, she dies. why even give the player a choice at all then?

the characters have backstories that are never elaborated upon; pink-haired loli gets beat up by her dad for being a weeb, but that's as far as it goes; you never learn anything else about her. same with the other characters besides monica, you don't learn shit about them aside from some MtG-flavortext-tier summary.

the poem you 'write' doesn't make a difference, so why offer the player the option to choose different words for the poem if they have literally no effect whatsoever?

the scene with purple-haired bookworm dead from suicide lasts too long, such that it ceases to be unsettling and just becomes boring and annoying

additionally, at the start, purple-haired bookworm basically goes "el oh el, i suuuuure do hate it when authors lull their readers into a false sense of security before springing the spookiness on them, not implying anything teehee!" which, on top of the over-the-top warning label attached to the game itself, promptly kills all suspense that the player might've had up to that point.

overhyped normalfag trash.

Is there any horror games about delving either deep down or into something? The idea of having to brave something away from the level the world operates at really excites me. It's like those games where the final mission/level/area are vastly different and surreal compared to the rest of the game where your skills are tested to a little beyond their threshold the only retarded example I can think of is the collector base in Mass Effect 2, or maybe the Library from Gaylo

Silent Hill 3 is pretty much all about that. 1 and 2 were about searching a town for something specific and getting caught on in the weird hellish dimension that sits on the other side of the curtain. 3's protagonist is directly, deeply involved into said dimension and is basically being hunted down by it, so she delves much deeper into surreality, pretty much back to the source.

Some say it makes 3 worse than 2 because it lacks the latter's subtletly. I don't share that opinion.

Going off of this some more, I'd make a game started off with the landscape of Metroid Prime 2's Sanctuary Fortress City-scape. On the edge of the city, there are mountains that have deep ice chasms. You're making your way through them with nothing but a cloudy, alien-looking night sky to give you light. The equipment you brought with you was enough for light hiking, but you find yourself inadequately prepared for what you face.

33f1cf No.15089615

>>15089610

>>15089484

This gave me an idea for a game that I'd want to make:

Shortly after the advent of viable extra-terrestrial colonization, humanity discovers hints of civilization on a distant world. You are called out, as an Archaeologist, to study markings on a remote mining site for any further knowledge. The alien night sky is a cloudy rust color, with stars barely showing through.

As you walk out from the cityscape towards the mountain range, you can see a deep chasm that runs on the far side of the range. It's a teal blue color, like that of a glacial ravine. Pitons are set into the rock face to aid in your descent. On the chasm floor, there's a rivulet running through, leading you on.

The site is a small one, cut into the side of the chasm and has some scattered debris of what looked like a pillar of some sort. It has struck the wall and broken a hole into it. Inside, the hewn stone resembles the kind seen inside a pyramid (or those Dunmer strongholds for those who've played Morrowind) pardon the lack of gameplay description, Apparently, I like vignettes

Anyway, the game itself would have puzzles that you'd have to write/draw out and study to recognize patterns. From that, you'd come across stuff that would help you understand their culture, values anatomy and logic (all the cool world-building stuff)

Didn't plan on getting this detailed about it

>What have you been playing

Condemned Criminal Origins:

After playing Amnesia the dark descent, I wasn't sure that there was a horror game with combat that could ever be as terrifying to capture the feeling of helplessness and tension.

Whilst condemned isn't so much about hopelessness, the fear is still there, and it's in fucking droves. This game will have you checking every fucking corner, every crevice, looking behind you constantly. The only way it would be more perfect is if it made you feel NEVER safe, which the last level is doing a fine job with.

Rating: Condemned is a game that I am only able to play in short installments. It's fucking unnerving in all aspects, it's not about helplessness, it's about the unknown and the disturbing. If you stop to long to think or take too much in, it'll overwhelm you. Spooky as fuck, extremely visceral, ridiculously potent atmosphere, feeling of helplessness even though you're armed, but the taser needs to be fucking nerfed or have charges, seriously that thing makes the game a bit of a cakewalk honestly

Soma

From the creators of Amnesia. I can't help but feel a little disappointed by this game, the concept is really nice and fresh but the monsters either feel really cheap or really weak. 1. A laboratory filled with a blind monster who "Roams" the lab, but actually just breaks the fourth wall constantly and teleports to your position whenever your character makes a sound louder than a fart 2. The same level where monsters only react to sound, so you can shine a flashlight in their eyesockets and they won't react unless you turn it on next to them They also do have a sense of proximity so getting too close can be dangerous3. Some overweight teleporting faggot who uses wallhacks and constantly teleports his fatass around. If you're in the same room as him he uses cheatcodes to find out which corner you're sat in, but don't worry, he can't do a fucking thing if you stare at the wall/close the door behind you so he can't get in.Till the chase scene anyway, which feels kinda lame too. 4. A giant testicle on legs which has lights growing off of it that stumbles around the station and acts more like a guard from thief than an actual terrifying monster.

The game is kinda predictable, and it really doesn't capture the same level of fear as Amnesia or even condemned. The game is disturbing at best especially given the source material and basically just run of the mill horror at worst. Enemies teleporting to your location and predictable shit kinda saw to that. Haven't completed it yet though, so maybe there will still be some surprises. If you ask me though, the 'Monsters' are just that though.. Monsters. The only thing that really scared me so far was the first time I encountered the teleporting fag, and even then that was before I found out he was weak to the most mundane fucking shit. Condemned managed to be more scary with less body horror and more human Traits in it's enemies, that should tell you enough about how well soma works as a horror game.

Rating: Spoopy, Outstanding sound design, interesting premise. Feels a bit too far fetched to be believable let's build a rocket and fill it with robots of ourselves to fly into the moon instead of repopulating the planet and re-terraforming the earth! lNigga a goddamn meteor the size of Mexico killed the dinosaurs and life still exists, and everyone gives up after a goddamn 'Comet' kills everyone? Bitch please. Also everyone is either a robot or dead now because reasons.

Resident Evil 7

I've only just started playing today but I'm getting really good vibes so far. This game sorta feels like a cross between condemned, farcry 2 and resident evil 4, which is a very good combination in my opinion. My only real complaint is that aiming is fucking hard if you have the reticle off. Just forget that shit, it's not farcry 2 or condemned, only taking influences from them.

Seems scarier than Soma so far as well, probably because it relies less on 'Oh hey, check this incredibly sophisticated Sci fi facility out, oh hey it's that strange brown red shit again, ooh look another enemy with an easily exploitable weakness, yay!' to 'fuck, goddamn resident evil and mansions.. Where is that immortal nigga gonna appear from next.. What if I ran out of bullets? What's down this creepy basement level? Holy shit this game is claustrophobic.'

Rating: Pretty spooky, the game does horror very well, feels more conventional, but at the same time not cheap in the slightest. Genuinely scared when that Bitch followed me down to the basement and they could have done a cheap fucking scare but they didn't. Hats off to you RE7 Devs for not being predictable fucks.

I always only saw one or 2 pics of her at a time, I never understood the massive disgust anons had for her. Certainly there are far worse looking women out there, why be that upset over a second grade slut?

But seeing all these pics at once, I think I'm understanding the true horror. It's not the beauty (or rather the lack of it), that's something you could easily endure even while having sex with it.

It's what's beneath that face. It's the thing that hides behind it's eyes. The whole of it isn't just an ugly women, it's just a skin it puts on to hide from everyone, itself included.

Everything it does, every ornament on it's body, it's as generic as generic can be, but it's flashy and colorfull to get your attention. It's not a personal statement of style, it's a really bad attempt at looking unique, original and interesting. It's faking the appearanec of someone that actually has a live, a future, dreams and hopes.

But it has none of those things.

It's hollow as fuck, vapid and shallow. And it knows. It uses it's body to coherce or seduce weak willed desperate men to survive, not just the daily grind but even worse, the reality that it's ugly both in and out, that it's barren and hollow and has no purpose in life. It has no respect for the men it can atract but has even less for itself, which is why it endures the company of those men. It's the only way it can avoid being alone with itself.

It's essentially the monster version of a Bimbo. It's vapid, ignorant, slutty and has no real value for anyone or even herself. It exists only to leech from others and decorates itself as a very flashy trophy not unlike carnivorous plants or other predators that must seduce their prey.

The worst part is that it's too close to us in the uncanny valley. It reminds us what we would be if we lacked evrey kind of morals, ethics, self-respect or basic empathy. If we were to simply clos our eyes and live our life asleep and numb.

It's the worst that a human being could aspire to be. And it's real.

Honestly, Frictional dropped the ball with Soma. Simon is not the sharpest tool in the shed and keeps on forgetting that memory transfer is copy+paste and not cut+paste and I feel that that could have been a pretty scary part of Soma if they really asked those questions.

Imagine you were got a perfect copy of your mind at that time made into a computer file. Anon.brainscan wakes up no longer having a sense of smell, not feeling anything and maybe no sense of sight, just a mind thinking, talking and listening. You were just in a lab a moment ago and now a copy of you is in a different place with the hell knows? Part of you really was looking forward to a meal on the way home, maybe looking forward to an upcoming game and you never got to know how it turned out. That uncertainty it brings is uncomfortable. Is your brainscan copy truly sentient? Is the real you even alive right now, how did your life go if you did die? Is killing a brainscan copy of yourself suicide or murder?

I agree, it's got a really good premise, part of the reason why I think I powered on through with it so much, but honestly hiding from the monsters most of the time isn't terrifying, it's just kinda cheap and time consuming. That's where the games downfall is in my opinion, because the story is great although the glaring plotholes are; why the fuck would you not just repopulate down below instead of fucking about with machines 24/7 AND why the fuck would you spend so much time on some noahs ark shit when you could work on genetics instead, save humanity by making test-tube babies not turning everyone into robots. Also, it's 100 years into the future and we're not in space already? Come on now. Also, why are we always building bases at the bottom of the sea in fiction it seems really impractical AAAAND A comet wipes out the human race.. A COMET. Neat, makes sense to me

>Not saying her name

Not even her not so secret, rather (((chosen)))-sounding last name? Are you afraid that they still get alerts when she's mentioned? If that was the case, I'll refrain from saying it as well just to deprive attention from a certain -berg.

For what it's worth, thanks to the LW thing, I actually can't remember her name right now, so that must be a sign that the moniker worked.

I thought 2 was hot garbage. The broken up linear level structure was already worse than the RE-style design of 1 but they also made you play most levels twice because the groups were split.

You couldn't choose what characters you wanted unlike 1, the lore was kind of fucked (saving by huffing the plants that infected everyone that you aren't immune to?), the best characters from 1 are killed offscreen and the guy you spent the whole first game saving is the main badguy and wants to impregnate his sister with monster hulk babbies. Fucking Stan and whatsherface end up together despite having no hint of attraction and every single other person is dead no matter what you do, unlike 1 where your actions determined who lived or died

In summation, there is nothing left for us in ObsCure 2.

I've finished it like twenty times and keep getting the same four endings, is there something important that's easy to miss?

c30876 No.15101016

>>15100587

You can fuck yourself out of 2 endings by entering a certain room without having a certain item in your inventory, and you get locked out of the true ending by doing the most logical thing: grabbing some gas, the keys to a truck and getting the fuck out of there ASAP without even bothering to explore the mansion or rescue anyone, in fact this is considered the worst possible ending.

Watch gamecenter CX's episode on this game, it explains rather well what you have to do in order to get the best ending.

Can't disagree with that, ObsCure games are good but flawed games (the ost is top notch), still way better than the boring, overdone OTS action/shooter crap that gets passed as "survival horror" nowadays.

I personally wanted to see a corrupted Amy as main villain in ObsCure 3, could have been great if they made it right.

I finished Dead Effect 2 this week. It's basically indie Killing floor but it's alright for what it is. It was originally a mobile game but it's hard to tell since it looks like Doom 3 and plays nice with PC controls.

I just installed Magrunner : dark pulse. It looks like Portal meets lovecraft which I think has potential to be good.

Didn't finish Magrunner but I did get to the third act before getting bored with it. As a puzzle game it's fairly solid and the lovecraft themes are unique enough a draw for a game like this. However it's clearly made for cheap and with little experience (I think the studio is mostly versed in making point and click games), and the lovecraft aspect is done in pretty much the bluntest way you can imagine.
