Something i always remember from the early 2000's was 'fuck that guy' online reputations in games.
I famous one for example was 'Angwe' in world of warcraft. He was an orc rogue that camped a significant cross continental travel route in the game and killed any alliance player that attempted to head from the alliance centric continent to the horde one.
He was so famous there was a guild of alliance cultists that praised him and reams of screenshots and chat logs of people insanely buttmad that they could not take him down and he was well know, depending on who you asked, as a skilled player injecting flavour to the world or a massive griefer ruining pve players good times.
But that shit seems to have died out now in favour of names that are just handles of paid advertisers called 'influencers' with in game reputations completely forgotten.
Whens the last time you saw a game where players in game were famous or infamous rather than the irl personality themselves?

This is true but in the case of WoW specifically what ruined this aspect of the game was the introduction of "battlegroups". For those not in the know (oh how I envy you), WoW servers aren't just servers (anymore). They're mega-servers where 10-15 servers are combined into one gigantic server. You walk around an area where maybe a hundred other players are but the server-cluster chooses who they show to you. They will just flat-out not load players for you if they're not in your group if it means reducing lag and latency. This is why you no longer see mega-crowded capital cities and recognizing anyone anywhere ever is a thing of the past.

Goonswarm is currently the most powerful entity in the game. After leaving their region they settled in the best region in the game, Fortress Delve. Then Citadels came out and using the massive amount of money from ratting, they put a citadel in each system. Hence the name Fortress Delve. Goons then became the first nullsec entity to realize that industry is insanely powerful and created so much industry that their production and markets rivals even Highsec. They're stupidly rich, populated, and have competent leadership. They've basically won the game. They have Snuffed Out and Initiative as shock troops and they do a damn good job of it.

No, lfg and other ease of access functions did this. Up until before wotlk there were still infamous people like this on every server. I remember even our tiny little one had this fucking rogue who went after everyone, no matter what, to the point that everyone knew who the undead fucker was. He even went after my prot warrior buddy who was completely kitted in his tanking gear and spec. They dueled for like 2 hours because he wouldn't give up and kept cycling his cooldowns. Every time annoying fucking rogues come up my buddy always mentions him now.

In WoW, before the cross server bullshit going on. In battlegrounds you would pretty much always fight the same people and in order to win you would have to join a gang that had some teamwork. I remember the alliance players would actually begin protesting by not queuing up.

My group's solution is to generally travel in a caravan (and actually take care of it during fights) and either leave our gold at the main base, or keep it in higher currencies/exchange it for higher currencies when we go to a major city (and we luckily have one near where we set up our main base, a mansion previously owned by a medieval walmart owning vampire halfling).

I'm honestly surprised I haven't heard of an IOU/checking system for larger cities/guilds/entities. You can't feasibly exchange the kind of wealth you need to do big shit like build new castles or guild HQs. You'd have to get a large lockbox on a wagon, then pay strong, trusted bodyguards to ensure its safety when being delivered to the payee. You'd figure, at that point, large guilds and cities would just rather keep ledgers of who owes whom what, and that if they want to call it in, it'll be done in smaller amounts over several weeks.

This happened to our rogue multiple times and he wizened up by keeping most of his money in a safe at our base. In another campaign, he'd keep his money on the Paladin, both because of better average perception scores, and the fact that most rogues without a deathwish wouldn't try stealing from one lest the last words they hear are "DEUS VULT, HERETIC!"
And on a side note: in one of my last games, my Gnome Wizard was the party's accountant who always seemed to have some really spiffy magic items.
And my greatest idea for a new character would be a monk that's actually a venture capitalist and joined the monastery to protect his wallet and shekels.
