Recently I've been playing Shadow of the Colossus again, and I've been exploring the world hoping to find some forgotten oasis or asset nobody else has found. It made me think of Yume Nikki which also had maximum comfy exploration, and reminded me of a kid playing OoT with my brother exploring every corner for hours in the hopes of finding a new heart-piece or bottle.

Are there any other games like this that are either fun to explore, or actually have gameplay mechanics based around exploration? What are your favorites?

The dishonored games are often viewed under their play your way angle, but I always find myself having more fun exploring after dealing with the guards. The levels aren't that big but they can be really intricate with loads of hidden shit.

>tfw no comfy game about going to an island and exploring ruins, digging for treasure, camping and survival

It's a good game, most on /v/ just have shit taste.

The second is sadly worse and the DLC is a nigger game which i haven't played.

The Surge is some god tier shortcut pornography.

You thought so? There were some questionable story choices and the PC release was pretty borked for some time, but gameplay wise it's unquestionably better, especially if you like non-lethal. The level design for some of the missions is amazingly detailed and there's more freedom. Fuck story in this case.

Haven't touched death of the outsider either though, the fact it's stand-alone kinda worries me.

Sacred 2.

Its world has a lot of shit that's just there without any explanation, quest or meaning attached. Just to make world more detailed if you look for it.

The first one had that going for it too but with sprites.

I don't know it just felt worse to me, maybe the magic for me the first had was gone.

There definitely were some good enhancements compared to the first one.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance there was a huge yeti footprint. I haven't seen people talking about this, and I eventually changed the marker, but I remember wondering if it involved something deeper or if it was just a neat easter egg.

The first Dishonored was genuinely fun to play.

I heard bad things about this game, but you've sold me. I'll check it out.

I do remember feeling something was wrong during my first go at 2, but I've recently gotten back to it and I'm having a blast. I think it might be the detection system? Guards spot you and investigate much sooner in 2, and that can feel frustrating and restrictive until you learn to take that to your advantage.

I'm doing a NL/ghost run and having guards spot me and come before the red bolt indicator is basically a free lure out of view of the others for a clean sweep of the area. Ether bottles and stinging bolts are also the shit.

But yes, the main draw is that the areas are really detailed and there's more ways to interact with the world and open paths/secrets.

Like in a mission, to rob a store you have to overhear a conversation explaining how to breach the vault - just an explosion won't do, you need three whale oil tanks, and the third available isn't just at the other side of the room.
