IVAN is back o getting regular updates since last year. The latest one added a lot of graphical and audio shit I hate. They started with music that fit the theme sorta and now there's sound effects ripped straight from a royalty free website. Lots and lots of neat updates, semi complete (I think you can technically finish the game now) but missing some features, though I don't know what those are. ToME is pretty damn good with high replayability, but not much challenge. I think most of the fun is in the sheer number of classes and optional class ability trees.

Cataclysm: DDA is also good with tons of builds and shit to do, though last I heard the developers had been getting uppity about wanting to force advanced nutrition and shit.

DC: Stone Soup is pretty much past the point of no return. It used to be great, now it's becoming more and more simplified and casual thanks to retarded devs.

Elona+ is a wonderful sandbox roguelike where you can do whatever the fuck you have the stats for.

>What are your favorite roguelike games?

Angband and derivatives.

I actually got into it through Zangband, a very much improved version with plenty of cool stuff. I loved fucking around with different races, classes, items, and so forth. And in Zangband there is an overworld and other towns to discover for the items that are sold. Quite fun.

Another very fun one I played for a while is Mangband, Multiplayer Angband. Now that was some interesting gameplay. Asking people for help, making keybinds for stuff because everything is live and so on. My best memories was adventuring with a friend and we would use different classes to help each other out. One time I went rogue and would use a skill to detect veins of gold in the walls and my friend and I would spend a few hours mining that stuff out to save up cash. And once enough cash was saved up you could buy a house on the surface to store things like gold and items.

I should play it again, I wonder how its doing…

>no updates for 4 years

I wish I could find someone autistic enough to play this with me. I don't remember the system used for making hotkeys and what was needed to inscribe items.

a81697 No.15064318

Tangledeep was a really nice experience, but honestly, far too easy for a roguelike. Won on my third playthrough. The story is a bit whatever, the lastboss is SUCH a jrpg cliche. Really pretty though, worth at least one playthrough just for the beauty of it all.

I'm a big fan of 1WH, but lord that is another game that is too easy. Bards, Knights, Force Swordsman and Hereos just shit on the game. Hunters and Pirates are shit man. I wish the game had more variation, you really don't see anything interesting until 3000+KM, and even then, it isn't that different. Nice concept, multiple endings that get nominally more challenging. Cute artstyle and fitting music.

I'm currently bashing my head against TOME4, myself. I've won with Wyrmic (my favorite class) like 15 times, Oozemancer and Archmage were one attempt one clear easy, currently trying to win with a Sun Paladin, I reliably get to the master, usually shit the bed sometime shortly after in the dwarf tunnels for some reason. Always get a unique that simply overpowers me somehow. I intend to win with Sun Paladin and then try to win with Arcane Blade.

Also, be aware that different classes use different resources that function differently. Equilibrium, mana, VIM, light/dark, all need to be treated differently, in addition to class play styles.

>Having more than 16 classes or 16 races is bloat.

The difference between right race/class system and wrong race/class system is having tiers, even if you generate unique attribute system for your characters to lock them out of certain content for replayability's sake. If you try to balance them out they will indeed become same and unfun. But if you try not to think about what to nerf for sake of balance issues and divide classes by difficulty, especially in singleplayer games, you can make them really different. Just above that have many difficulty modes to play with OP classes, where their abilities can be useful. Also nerfing shit can take a lot of development time, and put you on a loop, look how retarded stone soup became.

Another way to do it is to remove class system all together and create class creation system similar to daggerfall, like in Caves of Qud, where you develop your own character from his weaknesses and strengths and can min max your own unique build.

a81697 No.15076783

Dates clear back to Tourist/Archeologist in Nethack. Maybe it's just a substitute for difficulty levels, but you could say it's less bland, too.

Well it doesn't fall under sound and it definitely doesn't fall under gameplay so i'd say that narrows it down to graphics

Anyone ever play an MS Dos game called Reaping the Dungeon? It was probably my first exposure to the genre (aside from Castle of the Winds). The premise is that there is a creature-generating machine on Mars that started burrowing into the crust and you have to destroy it. You have Health, Oxygen (steps, before health decreases), and Energy (for weapons). You can collect various ores and then exchange them at stores each floor, but the rate varies; meanwhile stores vary between weapon, tool, and misc every 3 floors.

Killing a creature awards "Crystals" (exp), and you get bonuses for clearing a floor entirely. Crystals can be spend on upgrading individual stats, such as weapon energy consumption, vision, speed, dodge, etc. You can eat various magic mushrooms as if they were potions (vision enhancing, wall walking, etc). The stairs down is called the Drop Shaft, and it randomly changes position every so many random steps.

Anyways, speed is the most overpowered. I replayed it as an adult, and the scale is that you start with "1" speed, so if you hold upgrades for 2-3 floors and upgrade it to 2, you can literally alternate movement against monsters with attacks and never get hit, ever. I think I got up to like 4 speed and just cheesed it hard.

You know what really grinds my gears? Games with that fucking "explore" button.

If your dungeons are so boring you need a button to skip them then you're doing something wrong.

An explore button is not a solution to your bland/lazy approach to level design.

You could at least add enough interesting features to justify engaging the player in the major defining element of the genre.

Any good Roguelite (inb4 autistic screeching) platformers people can recommend? Only ones I've enjoyed are Towerclimb and Downwell.

>>15096449

It's a convenience, expecting every fucking level in a roguelike to be interesting structurally is unrealistic. It's often combat situations that are of interest. On top of this explore/autowalk will stop instantly on seeing an enemy, meanwhile mashing can result in taking a few steps more than you wanted to after seeing something.

More roguelikes need a feature that just makes you stop dead in your tracks the moment a monster appears on screen. For some reason Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is the only roguelike I can think of that added in a feature like that, and it's kind of wasted in that game because you'll often have enemies in sight at all times and usually makes you turn off the safety out of frustration.

I just want to take a moment to bitch and moan that the Switch hasn't seen a mystery dungeon game yet, specifically a Shiren game.

Fucking when.

>>15096521

I've never played a rogue-lite platformer with good level design. A platformer needs good level design, and you don't get good from a noise pattern.

auto-walk is okay for that mashing issue you mentioned. But I still don't agree with auto-explore, which exists for a different reason. Interesting dungeons are far from impossible. Nethack pulled it off, ADOM did alright, Incursion, IVAN, LARN, and many others made due. I'm inclined to blame the speedrunners or tourneyfags for it. Because adding uncertainties to the dungeons might come off as bloated, suboptimal, or even more tedious for them. So developers put the band-aid of auto-explore on the bland dungeons to not upset them with potentially controversial content for the relatively less autistic.

Another theory is that it's just a *band-inspired thing, since they tend to have enormous dungeons.

But even if it's just big dungeons that are hard to populate, you could at least try making them more interesting first.

Most of those kind of games are hardly more interesting in dungeon design than the original Angband, if at all.

>>15096565

DDA could use a walk button.

I haven't played it in a while though.

I'm still fucking salty about kickstarting Catacomb kids, I had no idea it was going to be a platforming roguelike where combat was highly reaction based and you often die in one fucking hit because your health pool is so low and enemies can easily hit you for 60-140% of your total HP in one blow.

The design philosophy is pants on head retarded to me and deep down I feel like a lot of devs just played Binding Of Issac and decided their game needs to be harder than that so the scarce amount of content they created can last longer.

https://hooktube.com/watch?v=CKVL0YlBTxw&t=182s Here is some guy, who must be playing this game as some sort of punishment for shitty taste, having his run end in one hit because the only thing the dev knows for certain is that he wants his game to be HARD.

Kizrati is a cool guy. The game is $20 because he works on it full-time (or at least significantly more than your average one man project). At least pirate it to try it out first though, in it's current state it didn't really scratch my itch as I find the combat lacks variety and I'm not big on stealth/evasion.

So how was it? They changed a lot in recent updates and went complete autism with the material types. Like leather and iron weren't good enough. Now you have 10 different types of one specific type of metrical. Not that I'm complaining. But you would never bother most low quality materials because you're guaranteed to find something like "Dark demonsteele of soulripping of bloodred iron made of iron" which are pretty good even for later caves.

Maybe I can smelt all the shit materials and make something good in he forgery, once they decide to do something with it. Oh yeah, there's a forgery room that can appear in dungeons now, it's just eye candy as of now.
