It's not just the blue coat. Vergil also embodies a much higher social class than Dante. (He speaks in a more aristocratic tone compared to Dante, who swears regularly and talks in a more relaxed tone.) Dante also wears his jacket with no shirt underneath since he doesn't really care about what other people think about him. Dante also uses guns and his sword is this big claymore looking thing. Whereas Vergil's is more like a katana. The two characters are foils of each other and their differences highlight their similarities.

Everyone brings up The End as the best gameplay moment in the series but to me this fight is far better. It's what the entire game and story is building toward.

I enjoyed Vorkken's fights in The Wonderful 101. Similarly to Vergil he gets more and more moves in each one, along with more defensive abilities (including the parry, which temporarily KOs your units and makes you vulnerable like it does when you use it on him). The fourth and final fight with him I particularly like because, apart from it being a really good test of your skills, the way music and colour is used in it is nice. It's the only fight in the entire game in which Tables Turn doesn't play when you're about to win, which gives it a more serious tone than the rest, and the battle theme is a remix of the one used in the previous three fights with added instrumentation to represent that he's stronger now. The intro where he powers up is also really nice, mirroring Wonder Red's super form down to using purple as opposed to yellow/gold (first two pics related).

For a lesser known example of a good rival fight I want to mention Ryu Ga Gotoku (Yakuza) Ishin's final boss as well. He has over twice as many health bars as any other non-optional boss, which immediately gives the impression that he's twice as tough as anyone else you've faced so far, similar to Armstrong at the end of MGR. His first phase's moveset is quite similar to your sword moveset, but his second phase is my favourite; the transitional cutscene at the start of it encourages you to a use the Wild Dance (gun+sword) style, which lets you interrupt any of your attack animations at any time by dodging. He uses the same style in this phase, only instead of doing that he'll usually dodge as soon as you manage to successfully hit him, so that whole part of the fight ends up looking like a dance. Then in the third and final phase he starts glowing with heat like you do and goes back to his first phase's moveset, on top of being more aggressive, taking less damage and dodging more often. All that coupled with the dynamic music, which changes as you progress through his phases, make for a really nice way to end the game.

Red isn't your rival, he's your senior. They managed to make a teen in an unassuming outfit intimidating through buildup alone in any case and very few games just let you up and challenge the previous main character like that as a final or secret boss.

Yeah Silver is the player's rival in Gold/Silver

I actually really like Silver because it's established the character is jealous of the player and constantly wants to 1-up you. It's essentially like they switched the dynamic from R/B. The player is now Gary and Silver is Red. And by the end of the game he's now had the shit kicked out of him so much he's more humble and wants to just get better and knows better than to mess with you anymore.

It's a shame that every, single, rival after Silver was just this happy go lucky person who follows the player around and doesn't really do anything aside from say "wow player you're so great by the way wanna battle?" I have a feeling this was done at the time because playtesters thought Silver was too edgy and they wanted to sand all the edges with the series as much as possible. And because May was so popular with the anime so they just wanted to do that again every time. It's a shame because the player rival can really be an effective story hook to keep yourself interested in continuing beyond just "catch all the pokemon" and "multiplayer".

DMC's derivatives, as well as DMC itself has been trying to outdo Vergil for years and no one has succeeded or even really come close. Credo is undeveloped and doesn't hold the narrative weight that Vergil does nor is his fight as interesting or challenging. I feel Jeane and Azel are too similar to Bayo and Gene respectively and Sam is just too easy a fight. Vergil isn't a carbon copy of you but he can do everything you can with his own sense of style and has an answer for everything you can throw at him. Not just that but in DMC3 Vergil is the main event, each fight has build up that pays off and he refuses to play second fiddle to the big bad. The climax is the tie breaker between Dante and Vergil and they both acknowledge this in front of the 'true' villain of the game as if he really is just unimportant and only stalling their final battle by having sparda in his possession, something that they both need to immediately take from him for different reasons.

I don't think a rival can be done better without retreading DMC3's way of doing it and refining it, even if Vergil's a boss in DMC5 I don't think it'll be as good because DMC3's setting and plot lends itself so well to Dante and Vergil's confrontation. Dante in the rest of the series embraces both sides of his heritage because he had to do so to surpass Vergil and you can't exactly do that again with Dante. Nero also already came to terms with his two sides through DMC4 so thematically they'd need to take a new angle to really hit it home like they did in DMC3. I do think >>15059389 is probably one of the better runner ups. Like Vergil he is the main event and not just an attraction on the side and carries the narrative weight to truly deserve his spot as the climax of the game.

Protoman sort of stopped being a rival a few games in. Like in 3 he isn't really and after that he's mostly Megaman's ally.

On the other hand there also Bass in 3. Where he kicks your shit in during the first fight but when you fight him at the end of the game he's pretty easy. You could also consider Serenade since he's the one you have to topple to become ruler of the Undernet and his fight is the most unconventional of the entire series.

While he's a friend by this point Proto is a classic rival.

This really isn't accurate since he's killing regular people entirely to start a war. And by Letho's own admission he's doing it because he was promised a brand new Witcher school if he did it. As much as Letho tries to claim the moral high ground and criticize Geralt for "playing soldier boy" he's basically doing the same thing.

His second fight is also by far the most satisfying moment in the entire game. Since his first fight in the middle of the game is one of the more challenging fights since he's flat out overpowered compared to the player. However by the time you fight him at the end the player is so overpowered that you just streamroll over him. The second fight's arena is also much larger so it's way easier to avoid his attacks and magic.

That's not really true, sure, most of them were generally friendly but a few like Hugh, N, and Gladion (I don't like him very well though) are edgier. N and Gladion both have villainous parents like Silver, while Hugh's just trying to resolve a grudge by recovering a stolen Pokémon.

Also Wally is retarded throughout the entire game but mans up in the post game of ORAS and has the most powerful team Gamefreak has ever concocted for any trainer, ever.

I don't know if I'd consider the final Copen/Gunvolt fight in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 the best rival fight, but it's certainly a good one, especially the Copen fight.

It's even better in the Score Attack fight, where both Copen and Gunvolt are even stronger (For example, Gunvolt fires three Luxcaliburs at once and Copen constantly spams Greed Snatcher even more), though the final boss music unfortunately doesn't play in that fight.

I was gonna post Pixy, but the more I think of it, Yellow 13 was a better rival than Pixy. 13 was present over the whole course of the game and whenever he and the Yellow Squadron appeared during early missions, you always got your shit fucked up until Stonehenge. However, outside the gameplay segments, you got to know just how honorable he was and how highly he thought of being an ace. The narrator comments just how angry he was later in the campaign when his allies were resorting to AA guns instead of victory through air supremacy like they always did, and that he held you in great esteem for gitting gud to the point of flipping the war situation all by yourself.

It really drives it home because at the end it's revealed that the whole story is the narrator writing you a letter describing his days with Yellow 13 during the war, and how he felt that you, as Yellow 13's rival, should know about him because 13 was always at his best when fighting with you.

I guess this guy counts since he was the only reoccurring monster in the game who would also retreat after every battle to recover and come after your ass later and always posed an actual damn threat, making him the sole antagonist and pretty much your rival.
