I think the current state of the AAA industry is proof enough that video games aren't just an endeavor you can throw money at in order to achieve greatness. Games have higher budgets than they ever have had before, and yet the quality is going down. People are still playing the original Doom today but do you think the same will happen to Doom 2016 in twenty years? Big budget games are a yearly occurrence, and every year people forget about the previous years games.

The problem is not a lack of money. A lack of talent may have something to do with it, but I'm more willing to believe it has to do with the business/political nature of the industry.

Ok so I finally gave this game a shot despite my misgivings about how the level designs look. The combat is exceedingly good and the amount of challenge on Normal difficulty is spot-on. It's very possible to be killed by just one guy and having to fight two at the same time is dangerous as it should be. Grapple attacks are satisfying as fuck and having directional attacks (e.g. back+punch = elbow strike behind you, right+kick produces the action in the OP screenshot, diagonal attacks are possible as well and so are running variations of each) is impressive as hell, it feels like a true three-dimensional fighting game.

The presence and utility of firearms are well-balanced despite the focus on hand-to-hand combat; they can really turn a situation around and feel very threatening when an enemy uses them. Weapons also feel very tangible because all weapons that enemies use can be picked up and used by your character as well, it's just unfortunate that dropped weapons disappear after a while.

I also like how your character often has a different outfit for different missions. Fighting alongside allied AI is really fun as well and it's rewarding to keep them alive. The level designs are still kinda bad and each has too much symmetry/copy-paste layout but they're not that offensive because the levels are short and don't overstay their welcome. So far I'm only on chapter 5 so I don't know if the game's quality holds up until the end.

Getting the game to run smoothly on a modern system is a pain in the ass though. I got the patched .exe and C-Daodan .dll but the game still had microstutters. I think I finally have it fixed now that I'm using QindieGL which is a wrapper that emulates OpenGL to DirectX 9. Daodan features such as alt-tab and borderless windowed mode no longer work but I can live with that. Lens flare effects from emergency vehicle lights have gone missing but they are rarely present in the game anyway.

I got to what seems to be the last chapter and gave up because I was playing on the hardest difficulty and that shit's near impossible, if you're still on chapter 5 you haven't seen shit yet, plot wise it gets pretty whacky. The game is pretty solid but if I could go back I wouldn't play it on hard or whatever it was, it's literally unfair and all the odds are skewed against you. Some enemies seem to have almost as much health as you do or even more and their attacks can deal like half a bar of health of damage, also the AI is very, VERY unpredictable and you can never tell what they're gonna do so you just kinda toss yourself into the fray and hope everything goes well, ultimately making some engagements based on luck rather than skill, even if you got gud. Level design wise is ok, however there's some parts where they put in a huge open area and have enemies with guns at the other fucking end of the stretch, or have you on one side of a building and place snipers on the other side.

The game had a very troubled development. If anyone remembers the mech they showed in the trailers, it was cut, and much more as well. Also, I remember Bungie boasting how the levels had been designed by actual architects, not game developers, and it shows, especially with how drab they are.

Microsoft already bought up Bungie before Oni even released, and part of the buyout negotiation was that they were allowed to finish up work on Oni for Rockstar. So it actually released on PS2 while the studio was owned by Microsoft.

Also, Halo development pre-dates the MS buyout.

MS acquired them in June of 2000, and Oni released at the end of January 2001.

>Where do you even find a copy of Oni these days?

I got a copy in good condition from a local Comic Book/Vidya/Hobby store for $5. They probably aren't going to last much longer though. To hear the owner talk, they've never been able to compete with GameStop for vidya (not much interest in anything but last and current gen), and comics have gone full poz and most of their regulars have quit buying comics or order more niche stuff from online. The only thing that's really saving them at this point is their Magic/Warhammer/D&D and other workshops which bring in regular customers - but the infection is spreading there in our local area now too. It's basically a ticking timebomb until the community gets to toxic and implodes, or some twitter twatters get their ass salted and starts a campaign against them at the local collage and on social media.

>you can't pickup items/weapons on the ground while running or walking but you can while performing a dodge maneuver such as sliding or cartwheeling

Just like an action movie. The devs thought of everything.

Also, I really like how the game's challenge is not only through individual encounters but also through attrition. It's not like so many modern games where the player is able to recover all his health back quickly and it's unlikely for him to be thrust in an encounter without being at full health.

The game is also unlike most action games where encounters are confined in a room. You have to be conscious about the space you give to fight an enemy and avoid situations where you end up taking the fight into other areas where more enemies are waiting. And of course, this also means that you can't just easily back out of an encounter and despawn the enemies, they are able to chase you across the level.
