Quake turns 22 TODAY after being released on June 22, 1996! Say happy birthday to Quake! Let's have a thread for this fucking great game!

Happy Birthday to id's best game. The devs and even creatives behind it mostly turned to faggots or turned to obscurity (the better of two options there.) Quake still holds up purely because of its level design focus and great orthogonal unit differentiation and distinct weapon classes. I'll never forget the day in an 11th grade English class where I struggled to answer a question and ended up comparing Doom to Quake and the teacher replied "you play Quake?"

No but we talked about it for a little after class. We started laughing after it, and after class I told him it was awesome to have a teacher who played that stuff. He told me he played it back in college and thanks to that I'm sure we both ended up with a funny memory after the fact.

God damn I absolutely love the aesthetic of Quake. Not the low poly models, or whatever - the general themes, palettes, etc. It might have been the precursor to BROWN N' BLOOM but it worked very well for Quake.

Come on, it’s fucking easy. Just download QuakeSpasm or Mark V and put everything in one folder. From the actual game you only need the *.pak files. Also, if you have the GOG version of the game, it includes the soundtrack in a form of *.cue files: game.cue – Quake, gamea.cue – Mission Pack 1, gamed.cue – Mission Pack 2. You’ll gonna have to extract the actual *.wav files from them, just look-up how. Otherwise you can find the soundtrack somewhere on the net. After you do, place the files into the music/ directory inside the corresponding mod directory: id1/ – Quake, hipnotic/ – Mission Pack 1, rogue/ – Mission Pack 2.
Your directory would look something like this:
Quake/
hipnotic/
music/
…
pak0.pak
rogue/
music/
…
pak0.pak
id1/
music/
…
pak0.pak
pak1.pak
quakespasm.exe
quakespasm.pak
That’s all!

I think the triple shotgun should be reserved for secrets around mid-level, unless it's placed in the open and you end up fighting heavier enemies in droves.
Secret placement as always is inventive. You can even sequence break the first bottom floor by jumping on the arches at the end of the first secret with the flaming axe and the fiend towards the first floor, and then grab the triple shotgun to make your fight on the floor easier.
There's a lot of neat setpiece moments. The final one stood out to me where triggering the last totem causes a bunch of werewolves and some gargoyles to spawn on top of the rooftops and keep sniping you, but across the other side a Quad Damage will spawn which can make this fight easier, though you have to risk jumping across the giant blade to get to the other side. And then picking up the Quad also causes a super Shambler to break through the wall in front of you. It's pretty freakin' hectic.
>>15050046
On top of this map being rather long, there's a lot of Quad Damage killfest moments here with a lot of enemies. I think you need to find six Quads to trigger a secret or something too.

I just beat Quake for the first time the other day. Couldn't afford a decent gaming PC w/ video acceleration back in the day, and gaming on Windows "plug & play" 95 was a goddamned nightmare. Didn't end up getting a new gaming PC until around 2004 after SP2 released. So I missed the whole Quake era. Except for QIIIA on Dreamcast w/ VGA & Mouse and Keyboard, goddamned that was fun
Anyhow, installed the Dark Places mod and had a fucking blast. Fucking embarrassing how a 20+ year old shooter can manage to be more fun than most modern games - even for someone who doesn't really have the benefit of nostalgia goggles.
I guess looking back, I did play Quake once when it was still new. I knew this goth girl I met on the local BBS who lived nearby, and I went over to her place where she and her brother had a few PCs set up in the basement just to play Quake on a LAN. I came into it fresh and they kicked my fucking ass.

I'm playing through Scourge of Armagon right now and it's so crazy to me how well thought out these maps are compared to modern day FPS. How they can take really complex buildings yet make them so easy to navigate through without getting lost, all the little super convenient shortcuts that you open up, great enemy placements, the secrets, everything. It's always so frustrating whenever a new game comes out that claims to recapture the magic of these old Classic FPS yet falls flat on its face and shits itself. It feels as though this sort of game design is a lost art or something, it's quite sad.

Even if that's true, the FPS will still be more than 200 at least which is far beyond the refresh rate of most monitors, making the difference menial.
Besides that, Quakespasm is far from a good sourceport as it fucks up shit as basic as the viewmodels.

It's simple. Quakespasm for single player and mods, Darkplaces for graffixfags, and ezQuake for multiplayer (I strongly dislike the way nQuake is configured so I wouldn't recommend that).

Vanilla Quake isn't that hard to run correctly from what I recall, provided you have the unofficial patch.

I haven't had internet for 2 weeks until now and have been hoping this thread would still be around. During the first few days of last week, I played Quake 4 (I know, I know, it's shitty, but it was one of just a few games that I had torrented when I moved and was waiting for another internet provider than Comcast to dig my fiber line [not jewgle btw, but a local company that does 250 up/down for $30/month].
I played Quake 1 a bit back in the day (1998 for the N64) but never got the chance to play it properly until I remembered it last week. Anyway, looking forward to the Quintessential Quake Experience.

I guess it never really clicked with me as a kid.
I was 7-8 when I first played it around when it came out, and I would just follow the machines to where they ended thinking they had a purpose (not really thinking about game limitations and that it was just a meat conveyor belt half the time)
Used to love shooting gibs, on into playing the Unreal games and I was disappointing when games didn't have that in them.
Not trying to be super edgy or anything but I guess I learned to separate it from reality early on.
Some movies and live action shit still gave my little boy nightmares though, but never video games
Also, IMO Quake>Doom for nostalgia factor.
Played both but I can still to this day pick up quake and just zoom through the levels, shits like burned into my brain where useful knowledge should be.

Yes, this is important, but sometimes it would be way more exciting to dip into the atmosphere of the game, feel it. Otherwise it might be just a bunch of core game mechanics in some boring decorations.
