rushed to meet a deadline, still very impressive considering the state of everything that did get done is quite good, but it's a good example of how even game design under punishing constraints can still turn out pretty well if things are managed well. The technology is solid (MT Framework is still an amazing engine and I'm eager to see if the RE Engine is as flexible), the level design and enemy design that is there is solid, the combat is not only solid it's orders of magnitude above its predecessor and its competitors. The game looks fucking gorgeous to this day and even on the PS3 and 360 runs at a 60FPS which is saying a lot when there's games that not only have less detail but run at half the frame rate.

for the most part it's not that bad. It does a lot of things games with free camera control can't quite, and during scenes with action it tends to focus on things well. There's a few areas where it doesn't work out well but those happen in probably less than 1% of the game time.

I'm playing Yakuza 1 right now for the second time right, and I just S ranked all of Battle review mode, because Yakuza 1 is great game that I enjoyed starting the series with.
Devil May Cry 1 is also my favorite game of all time despite me starting the series with DMC4, If you claim to like a series but can't even go back to the orginal to appreciate how everything started, then you should have the shit slapped out of you.

DMC3 on steam sucks, but it's fixed in the HD collection. Do not buy the regular DMC3, it has almost none of the lighting effects, so the game looks like dark souls 2.

DMC1's Devil Trigger is the best in the series, it's not even a contest, out of all the games Dante's attacks feels the most powerful in DMC1.
DMC1 is different from 3 or 4, those games it's more about keeping your style ranking high, combing and juggling enemies.
DMC1's combat is more to the point, it's focused on straight up destroying your enemies. Alastor and Ifrit have perfect move lists, everything you need nothing you don't and they don't overlap each other's both devil arms are equally useful.
The battle against Mundus is the only time in the series where it's shown just how strong Dante is, it's a great finale for the game and there is no other moment in the series like it.

I’m surprised this thread is still up.
Already finished DMC1 and I’m taken back by how bare the combat is compared to other games of this style, still had a good time and i wasn’t expecting a Dante that serious, i did enjoy the game so worth the price already.
DMC2 keeps fucking crashing, i have no fucking idea why so i can’t even play it so i did ended up skipping it.
DMC3 i can already see why it’s so popular, im still mid playthrough but i wish the castle wasn’t so…boring looking.

Considering the game is seventeen years old and was the foundation for all other games of this type you've played, you really shouldn't be. You don't get enough red orbs in a single playthrough on Normal to unlock Dante's full moveset anyway.
