So I've been messing around with my team in EOV and was thinking about using 2 chain fencers and a dodge fencer with a rover and a shaman. Am I going in too squishy or will a hawk rover and shamans prayers keep me going till end game?
I do have a benched smoke botanist and a pugilist but I just wanted to try something new for the next couple of floors.
Also, what did you think of the game? I personally think the music is great but the story is still pretty bland, loved the classes though.

It felt a lot more casual than previous titles, especially compared to 1 and 2.
I'm wondering how the last one for the 3DS they're working on right now will play like.

I think its because they're trying to appeal to a wider audience to get more people interested in the series, so they lower the difficulty a bit, add a story mode and just hope for the best.
I haven't noticed any DLC locked away in the game besides the synth music and some portraits which shows they at least thought about how it affected their other EO titles.I hope at least
I can only hope 6 is any good, I know a lot of people want their EO3 Untold just to replay their broken combo classes but I think it's best they just keep making new titles.

I like EOV a lot because of how well balanced everything is. The difficulty curve is great and none of the classes feel useless. There's a little casualisation but it's mostly in the optional difficulty modes. It might be my favourite of the series, but I'd have to do another playthrough to be sure.
And if you care about story in an EO game you're doing it wrong.

It might of been a bit more casual but the gameplay was a lot more balanced than other EO games. There wasn't stupidly OP classes that made the game absolutely trivial like EO1 Medic that reduced 80% of all damage, EO2 Hexer's Revenge damage that lets you 2 shot the post game's boss, EO3 NInja/Shogun or any of the ridiculous combo classes you can make, EO4 Imperial, etc. The upcoming game will have a bunch of features from the previous games and looks like it'll be a good swan song to the series on 3DS. I just hope that Atlus doesn't fuck up the series by transiting to the switch, Untold series is garbage but they redeemed themselves with EO5.
>>15037636
It's definitely one of the better EO games up there, probably tied with 2 as my favorite of the series. Anyone complaining about the lack of story in an fucking EO game should be shot on sight, it's refreshing how little story there is and you can just be an adventuring guild that just goes on journeys and build your own backstory/character traits with your imagination Some people don't like the customization features of 5 but I thought it was a fun way to give your characters more ways to be unique without sacrificing what makes EO so unique to other Japanese dungeon crawlers. And you could even turn off voices if you didn't like them.
308307 No.15038008

Yeah, the lack of story is one of the things that makes the series great. I first played EO1 right after finishing Bravely Default, a game which was plot driven in the worst possible way: so many words but none of them were interesting or well written, every bit of dialogue in that game felt like padding. To go from that to EO's almost pure gameplay was unbelievably refreshing.

I just started this game myself and made a all female group for now as the experimental group team to play with. I don't think the male designs are as good as some of the older games and the lack of lolis isn't welcome. But at least we get potato girls. Liking it so far but I have no idea what I'm going to do with my party. I'll probably have a grasp of what it's supposed to feel like once I get a few skills. I did the same. It was hard at the start but I don't find it too bad later on. If I remember right, you can choose to make the shaman focus more on buffs and whatnot so it becomes a better healer too.

Shaman pretty much needs someone to supplement their healing like a Rover or Necromancer, unlike a Botanist who can be the sole healer while everyone goes DPS or Tank. Shaman isn't bad however, they get better healing later on, on top of insane buffs that'll give you a huge edge in a lot of battles. They're better after you invested some points into your skills, good luck.

Yeah I tried to do shaman/rover for my healing but I gave up on that pretty quick. Having stronger on-demand healing and resurrect herb is too important. I also ended up not having enough buff slots with shaman since I was already using the offensive buffs of pugilist and masurao as well as the defensive one from dragoon. I regret not going smoke spec with my botanist though; the extra healing abilities from the healing spec seem mostly redundant, with the exception of the party-wide herb.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It hasn't felt that difficult to me and I'm in the third stratum, but I have played 1-4 and Untold 1 so I'm pretty used to the series. Food that just heals HP seems entirely worthless, since you get more mileage out of TP on your botanist. Storywise I'm actually curious where this game is going, especially given the nature of the third stratum. Spoilers for previous games: All the other games took place in a far-future post-post-apocalyptic Earth (though I think only the first game made this explicitly clear), with the implication that all the "magic" was just misunderstood technology. Now that I'm in the third stratum filled with skeletons, zombies, and ghosts, I'm curious if this one is in the same setting, and if so, how they will try to explain all the undead.
What union skills do people like? So far I've mainly used the TP restoration one and the auto-success escape one. Even FOEs don't really seem to necessitate them. I've gotten a little bit of use out of the human one that auto-negates the first 3 hits and the halfling one that resurrects and fully heals the whole party.

Any of the mainline titles are very good games, from 1-5. Untold is a retelling of 1 and 2 that made the game easier than the original and adds a pretty terrible story on top of it that feels out of place for Etrian Odyssey. The minimalist story in the mainline games are great because it lets you get more immersed into your characters and you get to build them however you like. If you want to get into the series, and only have access to a 3dsthen play either 4 or 5. If you have a DS to play off of then starting off from the first game would be a better bet.

To be fair, Untold DOES give you the option to play in "classic" mode, with the custom characters and without the superfluous story.
Starting with Untold 1 is fine, but I'd highly recommend playing it in Classic Mode first; the story mode is best experienced as a second playthrough. Partly because the story mode adds a second dungeon (and alternates between it and the main dungeon as you go through the story, adding a bit of variety), and partly because the story mode opens by casually spoiling something that was a major and unexpected plot twist in the original game.
TLDR: the original game is better than Untold. Fortunately, the original game is also there in Untold. Enjoy the game as it was meant to be played, and if you still want more, enjoy it again with an alternate take on the story and drunken Canuck tank waifu.

No major story continuation. Some few characters show up in different places or are references, but it's never a major issue or given huge weight, and if you don't know who they are you miss nothing, it's just a "hey I remember so-and-so" bit of plot/fan-service.
Just jump right in wherever you like. I recommend 4, since it's the easiest to get in to and it has a fucking airship world-map.

I don't know what people are talking about, Shaman is the absolute best healer for the early game, you just have to ignore trying to buff with them and focus solely on healing at first. Stick one point in the cheap accuracy buff and then max the passive healing and the cost reduction skills. They can heal 20+ hp for the whole party every turn at a cost of only 2 tp, which is huge for the first stratum.
Second stratum gets a bit more difficult but then you open up masteries and they get a lot more healing tools. I got all the way the the fifth stratum with just a Shaman for healing (except one bullshit boss fight). The only real downside is having to rely on items for resurrection, which is less of a problem than it was in earler games because they're so cheap now and you have food too.
>>15038661
Loonig forward to this, but I'm still sad they're not bringing back the Hexer. And I guess they're going for an EO4 style overworld, but I always liked the feel of having a single dungeon that you gradually delve deeper into. I would have preferred something like 3's sailing.

Touhou Labyrinth and Touhou Labyrinth 2 are both pretty good.
First one is good, but its postgame eventually gravitates to bosses that are just 'does damage then when weak prepares for instakill'. Also, EVA is broken, so never bother with it. Second one is a lot better in a number of ways, particularly with the addition of special mechanics for different characters (like Hina absorbing debuffs from allies when she focuses, and treating debuffs as buffs instead). Both of them feature rotating party members between the active and reserve slots as a critical tactic you have to manage in serious battles.

>Pugilist/Ninja: Bunshin for easy Lead Blow setup
>War Magus/Undecided: Ailing and Bind Slashes
>Nightseeker/Gunner: Follow Trace + Double Action, Point Blank Throws, maybe some Bind Snipes if I have the SP
>Survivalist/Reaper: Resistance, Offense, and Accuracy Debuffs, Ailment Shots during off turns
>Arcanist/Sovereign: Attack + Guard Order, Circle heals
It's kinda hard to decide on a subclass for War Magus.
>Nightseeker: More ailments, but using two of the same class feels lame when the cast is this big
>Landsknecht: Linking covers physical resistant enemies, but it might be SP intensive, and if it requires the improved link buff, then that prevents him from taking advantage of Overexertion.
>Protector: I could use extra defense on the turns when he's not using Ailment Slash, but having 3 characters acting as support limits damage.
