All the Mega Man games are mostly the same, at least the ones that are just Mega Man and not X or Zero or whatever. If you feel things are "cheap," the NES entries become much easier as the series goes on. 7, 8, and Mega Man & Bass get harder again though.
People saying one or another is shit are exaggerating. It makes sense to have personal preference, but they're the same fucking game every time. If you like one you'll like them all, unless you're a bitch who can only beat 6 or something.
The ones on Game Boy are all worth playing, too. And the one on WonderSwan.
The first few Mega Man X games are also pretty similar, but there is more emphasis on collecting secrets (which there is a little of in the later NES games), so you have to backtrack and really explore if you want to really beat them. Some people might like that, but sometimes you just want the quick run and gun gameplay from the original series. Also, the X series gets retarded over time with emphasis on Inafune's OC DO NOT STEAL Zero, so you end up playing with a sword half the time and it barely feels like Mega Man. Then you get a whole series of this with Mega Man Zero.

Uh… no they don't. Losing a life sends you back to a checkpoint, losing all lives sends you back to the beginning of the level. You're never made to restart the game. Though lack of passwords for the final few stages is a bitch, just because you can't turn the game off.
