Well, if you need more direct action, there's Descent 3. Its not as good, but its something if you need it. There's also the Freespace games which, while not the exact same, is by Volition, half the team that made these. There's also three 'spiritual successors' that are coming around so look out for those I guess.

Well there's three main ones. Descent: Underground, made by a bunch of fans who got the license from Interplay that's apparently recreating the multiplayer but it apparently sucks dick. There's Overload, a more true single-player spiritual successor by some of the original Parallax devs that is closer to the originals with closed enviornments, lots of weapons, shit to shoot, and all that stuff, but its also in Early Access. Then there's Sol Contingency, a game by some former Interplay devs that was originally gonna be a remake of the original, but now seems to be a new affair with a multiplayer focus and a demo out there if you care http://sol-contingency.com/builds/Sol_Contingency_PG_Install_1.0.exe .

Today I tried out Cytadela on linux since i was bored and just looked at some old fps games.

It plays too slowly for my taste, I think it is due to the limitation of the original Amiga hardware. But my biggest gripe is with controls. They are just too mind bogglingly weird, and of course there is no way to reconfigure them.

Im not sure if Im going to continue playing it. It has some charm and absolutely awesome music.

The only downside I could name is maybe the enemy movement looks more choppy, besides that the original look is far better than the super smoothed out graphics people seem to prefer. This is pretty subjective though but I really got used to it after playing so many first person games on the ds, the mess of pixels has a charm to it.

Had you actually played the game, you'd realize that doesn't actually work. "Lore totems" you find in the hell levels retell events that are obviously supposed to mirror important moments in the classic games, but their versions are too different from the classic games to be the same thing. There's also other details that don't mesh, like how demons in the classic games had actual artificial tech grafted on to them, but in nuDoom all the normal demons just have natural biological mechanisms. The only ones with cyborg bits are the ones the UAC cult got their hands on. They cyber demon is only a cyber demon because some UAC tech nerds grafted a gun to its arm and a battery to its chest. Plus, if it really was thousands of years in the future of classic Doom, humanity should have been much more advanced than "we've only put one brain in a robot body, and the only other existing cyborg suffers constant extreme pain from it.

GZDoom does not have reliable track records for all possible PC specs, Graf has went on record multiple times for his disdain of designing GZDoom to be compatible with everything already.

Don't fucking recomend anyone to update their drivers every time a new update is available either, driver updates are deliberately designed to slow the machine down and make it's performance worse over time after a set amount of driver updates. For best performance for your hardware you need older drivers and never update them again.

Pretty much all of them emulate lighting/fullbrights/overbrights with a good degree of accuracy to software (not exact, but good enough for most people). As mentioned on that page the fucked-up glowing textures you'll sometimes run into aren't directly due to glquake, but because modern engines support fullbrights while glquake doesn't so some mappers would act like they didn't exist.

Just play Doom 1 wads, or old wads from before the trend to make them super-hard, or use something like this to swap chaingunners for other monsters (like sergeants or former humans):

They're DOS programs, so run them in dosbox (which needs access to doom.wad, doom2.wad, and the PWAD you want to convert). The tools are pretty extensive and can do a lot, you can even write your own scripts to do whatever. There is of course a small learning curve, so reading the manual is mandatory (at least for the bits you want to use).

Actually you can outright convert the entire wad to Doom 1, but that might fuck up some levels that rely on Doom 2 specials like the linedef/sector tags in map07. So it's safer to just swap the monsters you don't like. But it should be safe to outright convert D2->D1 on levels that don't have hardcoded specials like that.

Original doom is pretty easy. I've been playing with project babel for a month now, i know enemies even with fast on in original are too fucking stupid, but that's a filter against hitscan spam. Babel did amazing job redoing its aggro, but that also made wads like italo absolutely fucking impossible to complete because simple enemies like gunners just fucking rape you, and 10 or more imps can turn the game into a touhou.

I usually end up balancing shit out by playing with broken as fuck weapon pack for fun.

If you want to try something skillful on Doom II try out Sunlust and SUNDER wads. Or slaughterfest 2012 (SF2012).

If you want to get your ass raped severely Project Babel + Demon Counter Strike on nightmare is the shit. Demon Counterstrike adds additional spawns on top of nightmare own respawns turning the map into a survival with waves and shit. On top of that i found out i had conflict with colourful doom, but not with Legend Doom Lite or Champions mods, so they can be added on top for maximum retardation (they actually work with babel config nicely because they don't edit monster records).

If that's Aliens TC, there's a page on the Chocolate Doom wiki that explains how to load it, as well as other TCs like Batman Doom. On vanilla you require Deusf for the sprites/flats part and Dehacked for the EXE patch. Chocolate Doom and presumably Crispy Doom have their own way to load them.

I like it because it makes the game very twitchy. You can literally dodge point blank shotgun blasts with a double tap dash. I still settle down for original game play though, because sometimes I'm not looking for an intense stressful time. I typically play with that visor mod and play on the hardest difficulty it gives. Realism is fun as well, but original game play can't be replaced by the mod.

I just started playing babel on yehovah and holy shit man, I can see this is going to be a good mod. I love that you can fire the double barrel and switch to another weapon before the reload. I also like how enemies move around on their own, even when they haven't been alerted and are in another room. They even use the doors despite never seeing me. I can play EDuke32 in OpenGL mode with no issues but GZdoom takes almost 20 seconds to load and has really low fps and stuttering, so it's completely unplayable. My drivers are up to date.

Scale wrong how? All actor objects or derived allow you to set an Xscale and Yscale, which is used by Demonsteele for example because the player sprites are not standard Doomguy size, which could be the case for yours. Normally one pixel of the graphic relates to one map unit.

FUCK yes, Marathon. I used to spend hours changing the game physics, weapons, and enemy settings with MaraModel Edit. My favorite thing was to create a pistol bullet that did 9999 damage of type crushing with an area of effect of a large room, flood a room with tons of pfhor, hulks, and troopers, then blast them out with a single shot. They would take so much damage it would take minutes for their corpses to hit the ground.

Eternal's story is a lot more then "verbose" it's walls of text, and all the good maps are on bad end paths I noticed. By map 14-17 you'll be sick of the whole thing and just want to get on with it or drop it. The maps themselves are all following such a similar pattern I actually thought it was all made by one guy. I fucking swear the Pfhor, Humans, and Jjarro all use the exact same design philosophy to the point where I could tell what I was looking at in the Pfhor and Jjarro maps at a glance there wasn't any alien weirdness going on. Then there is the textures good god I felt like all the Pfhor maps were just really shitty dungeons because everything looked like god awful purple and pink cobblestone with some green shit tacked on for contrast.

Other than turning down the difficulty, spamming homing missiles around corners or humping the corner so only one side of your lasers manages to shoot around the corner without exposing your ship are the most reliable strategies. Of course, this involves having to know where the bots are in the first place. Else check out this guy's channel who did a playthrough of every official Descent level on Insane with cold starts, no mid-level saves, and finishing each level with 100+ shields for how to go about things.

Sans the 100+ shields part, I've done the same for Descent 1 and Descent 2. It could take me a full day to finish only a single level. And it only gets more crazy from there.

Most total conversion mods for Doom are better than vanilla Doom, which I don't enjoy that much. As far as retro shooters go, I prefer the Build engine holy trinity.

Right now however, I'm playing this fantastic game, it's a much better title than most of its contemporaries like say, System Schlock.

It's more the maps themselves tbh, which are Community Chest 3, Doom 2 In Name Only RDC, and Mutiny, respectively. I'd heavily recommend that middle one, it goes to great lengths to establish an atmosphere of gargantuan, smoggy, oppressive industrial sprawl. A great WAD all around.

I'd say it's more like 10 or 11 years. STALKER and Crysis were pretty good and either brought something new to the table or improved on what was already there. Shooters went down the shitter because they became highly popular among normalfags after the release of COD4 in 2007. I think this is the moment that FPS genre died.

It goes back to 2013, when Rise of The Triad and Shadow Warrior remakes were released. They managed to sell reasonably well on a low budget, and that indicated a demand for this type of throwback shooter. On top of that Brutal Doom got insanely popular around that time which prompted Beth-id to do the final revision of nuDoom. People kinda started to follow the leader afterwards.

From what I've seen and heard the games are competent, but somewhat inferior to the originals the are trying to copy. I don't know if this will lead to something good, but I'm pretty sure it won't get worse at this point.

All map names in a wad are in MAPINFO, if you know which order the maps come in you'll find the name. That doesn't mean there will be wads for each and every single level seperated individually. Usually in all cases they're map packs with multiple levels put in the wad so asking for the map name is pretty useless and you should just use wad editing tools to find the map name yourself.

Or console commands to go through all the maps, since it's only 7 maps it shouldn't take you a long time.

If you go back that far, you're only looking at jokewads like Mokery. Or you have weird, experimental stuff like The Sky May Be, or Wow. Oh, and the various "adult" wads like Cybie (aka Doomguy's Pimp Ventures). But none of those qualify as trolls, since you know what you're getting into from the start.

At some point the idgames crew segregated the troll wads into their own place. Looks like there's a few that were made between 2008 and 2012, but I didn't even hear about them and they probably were largely ignored. By 2013 there were so many coming out that it was obvious something was up.

As someone involved in a few of these, this is correct. Numerous wads were made with different goals in mind. Some were designed to get the lowest score on doomworld, others were meant to bait users into downloading the wad only to find out it was a troll wad. Others were meant to trigger the "iAmVerySmartAndMatureOnTheInternet" type people who fill Doomworld, and to trigger Skulltag's administration.

A few took advantage of bugs in ZDoom that would purposely break down the road so Graf (because randy was never around) would have to either add a compat setting, or try and fix the bug, and proceed to throw a fit about it.

I don't think I'd go that far since both those mods are really good. However they make drastic gameplay changes, while Final Doomer is largely vanilla but with a fresh coat of paint on the weapons so it might appeal more to purists.
