Useful gameplay wise
Good animations, attention to detail in model animation or little things
Good narrative and character development which in turn is related gameplay wise (Paper Mario has chapters with one party member each, where they grow as a character, fight their respective boss then join your party. Simple and well done)
Most importantly though, being useful and being enjoyable to use. The rest is making it pretty.

Loyalty. I don't care if their stats are horrible or if their personality is annoying, if they stick with you no matter through some serious shit when everybody else is against you then I'll keep them with me to the end.
Otherwise, I go by how useful they are or what's needed at the time.

This game had that the worst. The ghost of some bitch follows you through an entire game and just bitches about everything. In game, in cutscenes, basically 24/7. I wanted to replay it because I remember it being really fun to, but as soon as I got cursed with her I just shut it off. I don't remember NWN having a bitchy companion

Came here to post this. DOS2 can be a bit dense, but has great flavor. Party members are well-integrated into the world, and contribute to your adventure from start to end rather than being add-ons for extra damage.
