They will not completely drop it as long as console manufacturers pay for exclusivity and have whole studios under their wing like sony has from software for example.

Death to exclusives though, i dont want to buy new console every 2 years to get best performance for games i pay for.

In an ideal world you'd just be able to customize backgrounds, icons and music to whatever the fuck files you can find like a PC

The entire concept of (((selling))) predesigned themes so people could customize their consoles always seemed odd to me

You could do that on the PSP to the point of even replacing the start up noise/graphic.

I knew some gigaweeb back in college that made his psp -or as he called it 'Pussb'p'- play an entier naruto AMV of offsprings 'staring at the sun' he got off Limewire on his. He bloated the UI with more shit than a koean players modded WoW set up.

Surprisingly it eventually bricked as hard as a console can brick. Imagine that.

UI design in general has gone to shit for much of tech. It's the worst with websites with everything trying to pander to mobilefags. On consoles I imagine they also want to offer less customization so people are more willing to pay for themes when they do come around. I just use screenshots I took from games for backgrounds on my PS4/Vita.

The 3DS is a piece of shit but it does have some nice customization on the home menu. I have a Monster Hunter theme for it too which is pretty cool. Seems like they still cared a little bit when designing that thing.

I miss when consoles actually tried to look unique. Everything is content to be a nondescript oblong in black, white, or grey now. I'd love another Gamecube. Something that just says "fuck it" and takes a colour like purple as it's default. How about the PS5 comes out, and instead of black, it's orange.

True. I've seen pictures of what almost looked to be "Collector's Edition" Wiis stylized for a particular series, but I assume they were actually fanmade (and well done, at that), extremely limited production, or Japan only, because they sure didn't sell them in stores here in NA.

I think it's just the general trend of corporations controlling everything. People used to make their own websites any way they wanted to, now they have an account somewhere that they can customize very minimally or not at all. reddit used to allow subreddits to substantially customize themselves through CSS, now that's been mostly taken away. Myspace allowed customization, and even youtube used to allow for some. I haven't used Windows 10 yet but from what I understand it also doesn't let you customize it as much as older versions. Even Windows 7 doesn't allow it as much as XP did.

Themes were a thing to milk out more shekels because of how long the last console generations lasted. PS4 maybe has 3-4 years left if we're lucky. And even then if there is a next gen home console it will have a mid-generation hardware upgrade.

I'm expecting new generations of the Switch to be released after 5 years similar to mobile phones once better hardware becomes cheaper. Detatchable joycons guarentee backwards compatibility with Switch controllers and games at least. And each gen of hardware will be slightly improved iterations. No point in keeping themes locked only to that system for iPhone generational upgrades on a walled garden OS.

I don't see the point, maybe others feel the same. I'd much rather customize my PC where the only limit is your own knowledge and programming ability. Toggling the few customization options the console overlords provide just seems meaningless.

I feel the same way with games like Farcry and DOOM (also Minecraft, this goes without saying) and their level editors. Why even bother creating anything in these lite tools were your content is restricted to platform. It feels like a waste of time and you should be learning to use actual tools/programming. Unless you're a child, that is. In that case have fun for now and graduate later

Fair enough (I mentioned CFW since the few I have put on there required package manager and I believe PSN Patch to install), but that still leaves the question of if there's a site with a solid amount of them to download them from.

And then at times, at least with the PS3, they take down various themes for reasons unknown. I remember downloading a free Eternal Sonata theme on my first PS3 off the PSN, but when I got a second (one that was CFWable), in trying to set things up before hacking it, I couldn't find that theme on the store anymore, and looking online for information didn't present anything more tangible than the simple fact it had been removed.

Nintendo's just slow to the punch with themes, 3DS didn't have them either until a few years ago.
