It seems like in the early days of last gen everyone and their dog wanted to customise their consoles right down to the dashboard. People went crazy when the first themes appeared on the JP PSN that added animated backgrounds or music, people liked being able to change the 'blades' on their xbox 360 dash and make it look like old carved stone or some rusty bioshock looking bullshit.
Even the 3DS had things like a MGS3 theme that played Snake Eater and a bunch of yearly halloween/christmas themes for stuff like pokemon. To say nothing of the PSP being the king of player created custom themes.
But nowdays? it seems like every so often you get a theme for a companies big IP's like final fantasy or resident evil but 9/10 its just new icon images and a flat background to low quality music. The Switch has the same variety as light/dark mode on fucking twitter and the vita got maybe 20 themes in its entire lifespan and the xbone doesnt seem to really support them at all.
Sure the PS4 has a couple of really good ones but they are like a once every 6 months deal in a sea of 3rd party stolen art and shit like "skeleton smoking weed" shit to milk a small amount of money from stoner kevs.
I know its a little thing but i miss them. I was watching the trailer for The Tetris Effect and thought 'man, that would make for a really nice dashboard theme on my PS4' and then realised i haven't changed my theme once since i got the SNK one that plays music like an arcade machine with similar effects when navigating the menu. That was a few years ago now.
Do you miss them?
