Kids who were 9 years old themselves when it came out are now 18 and probably feel nostalgia for it, as part of their childhood.

Back in the day, the likes of ebaumsworld was public enemy number one of imageboards, and a number of other OC generating sites as well, for the crimes of stealing content and claiming it as their own. Issue these days is that reddit and the like are so fucking big, and spread their tendrils into so much, it's a malignant tumor that ruins everything and is hard to fight when there's likely some sizable percent of a userbase that are cross-siting reddit mongrels themselves. Fuck, even here the anonbase is mostly a mixture of halfchan exiles (the ones that cross over sooner being the better amongst them) and reddit exiles, and a smattering of 8ch originals, both of which bring their tastes and notions of what is acceptable or not with them.

I suppose it also doesn't help that we're long past the days of the internet's wild west at this point, for better or worse.

I know reddit has an absolutely horrible rep on imageboards, but the site wasn't always the way it is now.

In 2005-2009 reddit was one of the most ballsy and original sites on the internet. Then in 2009 they changed how the site worked and within two years it became the reddit we know and hate today.

People always mourn over 4chan, I do too, but I also mourn over the assassination of reddit's oldfag userbase. Things that made the front page in 2007 would get you shadowbanned today.

>>14993953

Have you seen the recent UI? It's somehow even worse.

They're turning the site into fucking Facebook. I can't believe a place that used to be fiercely libertarian became such a liberal-infested pile of trash. It happened so quickly as well, you could feel the site get worse a few months after subreddits were added.

2009 is when subreddits were added, defeating the entire purpose of reddit.

Reddit used to be a site with one /b/-style forum where you could look through threads by how voted they were. Anybody could post an image or link as long as they had an account. You had news stories about mass shootings, memes, and music discussions all under the same roof, with the creation of subreddits they destroyed what made the site so interesting.

What you can see is that back in the old days, there was a bigger feeling of community you could say, with every board, being a part of a bigger family, I'm guessing now that the whole concept of an image-board is well known and perhaps for some a bit jaded, there's no such sense of community anymore, at least among boards, and even within boards. To be honest, even digging through my folders from way back for organization purposes, I'll come across stuff that I'd clearly saved because it was funny at the time, but isn't amusing in the slightest now. Such an era will never come back. it now lives in the memory and folders of anons from such a time that are still around, and the occasional repository on places like ED. Last I checked only /v/ and /pol/ really had reason to migrate over, between Gamergate censorship and /pol/harbor (both cases of the moderation fucking over the userbase), thus those have remained some of the most popular boards here, along with the presence of /b/ I would assume most of the population of other boards stem from those mainly interested in vidya and/or politics. Also boards for topics cuckchan wouldn't allow, like /bane/ and /furry/, though last I checked they'd fallen down the board rankings for better or worse.

I lurked /b/ for 3 years and then branched out to /v/ which I stayed on until I got banned for a year sometime in 2010 because I was too much of a retard and didn't know to change IP back then where I moved to 420chan for that time. Then I stayed on various 4chan boards until 5 Guys Burgers & Fries with moot letting his goon mods run amok.

I just miss the atmosphere the internet had in the 2000's. I miss there actually being variety online, where people used more than the same 5 or 6 websites. I miss the carefree silliness of things. I miss discovering oddities like CWC or The DA Community for the first time. I just miss it all.

the thing is, it's only like that at the start of the game, and it makes sense because your character is literally fresh off the fucking boat.

if you have decent agility (which helps +hit) and decent weapon skill (which helps +hit), then you'll only miss occasionally.

if you make a char who has 20 or 30 agi and 20 longsword skill, and get pissed when your longsword never hits, then you should rethink how you make chars.

i made a fresh save recently, breton with 1h axes as a major skill, agi and luck as the two major stats, and i miss maybe one out of every five hits; which isn't unusual considering he's a level 1 nobody who just got released from prison and dumped in morrowind.

as you get higher agi, higher wep skill, and higher luck, you'll miss less and less. i don't see why this complaint appears everywhere, it's like folks expect it to be like goyrim where your character is a god-tier savior from level 1 who never misses anything.

No, when a sword hits a guy, it always hits him. That's the problem. Yes, it makes sense for some fresh-off-the-boat N'wah who's never held a blade before to miss a lot. But the way combat is set up in Morrowind, YOU the player are the one aiming the sword swing, not the character. You didn't miss, and it is clearly visible that you didn't miss, but the game intervenes and says you missed anyway.

If the player didn't have to aim and just issued commands to the character like in many other RPGs, then a miss chance is expected. Morrowind's combat feels like shit because it tries to compromise between character-based and player-based approaches.

I don't know how much of of it is just nostalgia speaking, but a lot of sites fulfilled their own unique purpose back in the day. Nowadays, 99% of videos are viewable, if not exclusive to Jewtube, the oligopoly of streaming services rendered several sites obsolete, and original content as passion projects has largely died out, between users growing up and needing to find viable sources of income, and younger users having minimal creative prowess and making content for the lowest common denominator for their 15 minutes of fame.

The Golden age of the Internet ended a decade ago, if not more, and it will never, EVER come back.

In my opinion, that's the biggest way to kill an imageboard: actively destroy the site from the administration or hosting end, and the posterbase takes up camp somewhere else, the way we have here. But cross it into real life, with media exposure or shenanigans like chanology, and you can both pollute the userbase with filth that would never belong, and dilute the value and weight of what the prior users have to say, and you can slowly change the site into something it was never supposed to be. And when that happens, when the trickle of newfags becomes an unmanageable flood that even the moderation welcomes (because muh ad revenue, and passes to sell in the case of cuckchan), they'll either say and shift slowly to lurking, or just leave for parts unknown as individuals rather than a whole.

For something similar to happen again, there needs to be a new frontier with artificial barriers to entry and limitation, because newer technology has increased our abilities so much that all the accidental limitations and obstacles that gave the early Internet its shape have disappeared.

Everyone realizes that playing with cheat codes ruins games, but they don't get that the same principles apply everywhere. If people can realize that voluntarily undertaking restrictions leads to interesting things happening, then another place like the early Internet could happen again. >That used to be Rule Number fucking One, and clueless newfags expecting spoonfed meals got mocked relentlessly until they learned how shit worked. The normalfag floods and all the psyops really did a number on these places.

I think it has to do with two things: an idea that if it was on the "Rules of the Internet" it was purely a joke (some were, but quite a few had a grain of truth), and that no one in the their right mind would delay their gratification to learn what a board or site's userbase is like and how to assimilate in favor of shitposting from the word go. And sadly, "lurk moar", at least on the end of trying to maintain quality, doesn't work as well as it used to when quality has slipped so far into the shitter that you can only pray to keep it stable. While one should strive to be the change they want to see, that doesn't mean other people want things to change, even if it would be for the better.

I largely blame social media + Reddit-type sites for the downfall of Internet subculture. It's no longer about making OC for the sake of making OC, but for the potential dopamine rush of likes, imaginary Internet points, or equivalent. It's also stifled a lot of meaningful discussion.

I remember when Internet memes would consistently live on for months on end, and ones that lasted for about a week were incredibly uncommon. Now the opposite is true. Heck, even a week is pretty long for something to remain relevant, as previously-mentioned dopamine vampires will suck out any potential jokes something can have as soon as they can.

Missing the happenings isn't even the worst part. The horrible reality is that the web is now incredibly consolidated, the old sites either died or were consumed by corporations, everyone uses the same shitty big fish social media pages, leftist poz is inescapable, all the old mods for games you liked have probably been lost for 6 or 7 years, everyone is more concerned with rulescucking, and unless something happens soon it'll continue to get worse than it already is. And this isn't even coming from Gen X-er or a Millenial either- I'm just under 20.

I've seen those types claim that being against spoonfeeding is being against helping your fellow anon. It isn't; it's aimed more at those that refuse to help themselves, to learn and use resources available for trying to find something on their own and be self-reliant, who instead beg for sauce at the drop of a hat. You can explain that all you want, it doesn't matter to them. I know. I've tried.

Probably. These days you can just reverse image search on almost any image. If there's only Japanese text and you don't know any Japanese, google translate even lets you write out the characters so you can google them (you have to select Japanese as the input language though otherwise the character recognition is shit). The bitterness is understandable, the past 10 years has given plenty of reasons for bitterness. So many things about the internet in particular have changed for the worse since then. Ultimately- unless you gain the resources and funding to run your own competition to the big sites, all you can do is enjoy the last of the old internet while it's still hanging on to life. And make sure to archive as much as you can, you don't want to forget what you've lost and want back.

Of all the old modding sites, I think only Heavengames and some Morrowind modding sites have survived unscathed.

Issue is that morons still aren't aware of anything but reverse searching with shit like jewgle images, which obviously at some points is going to spit back blatantly wrong stuff and isn't the best for lewds anyhow. Again, the issue isn't asking for sauce in and of itself, it's asking for it without trying to find shit on one's own.

I suppose it doesn't help matters either that there's no inherent reverse search functionality here, as opposed to cuckchan, even pre-exodus. Though, while one can add it to their own display options for 8ch, they have to know the code for it advance, and some anons are against using javascript anyhow. The additional steps otherwise though, being that they add clicks, turn off the lazy from doing so (in which case I'd argue they don't deserve sauce anyhow).

>>14994567

Yes, I know that. And in regards to anons, that's jewgle translate, and understandably people have more than a bit of an issue with jewgle. I wish there was some sort of "draw moonrune to copypastable text" thing as a flash program or whatever. My oldfag fueled deepest concern is that demoscene is dying. The new demoshit is great, but it lacks the soul.

I think that the biggest difference between 8chan after the Gamergate exodus and 8chan now is that you've felt like this was a living, breathing place with lots of different people with different interests that browsed different boards besides the main ones like /v/ and /pol/. We have to do something to drive back the retards. But if we knew how to do that, then we wouldn't be posting here right now because we would have used that knowledge to clean up halfchan a long time ago. I guess bringing back "lurk moar" is a step in the right direction. But telling retards to fuck off only helps if there's enough of us doing it, if there's more of us than there are of them. If there's not, then fags will keep acting the way they are because it makes them feel like epic trolls. And hell, I feel like some people are doing it on purpose not just to be an ass, but to exploit pic related to attract more retards here. I've been feeling this way since early 2015. Younger people just don't go outside anymore, or if they do, it's on the weekends, or friday night to get blackout drunk, and kids sit at home playing Fortnite or other normalfag videogames all day. What I find most painful isn't that its over, its that kids born after this era will NEVER know how great it was. They will assume its just appealing to nostalgia which is an absolutely fallacious argument. Today sucks compared to back then and I genuinely believe that as a fact. Sorry, I was trying to say something like "we would have cleaned up halfchan a long time ago and would never have even come to this place or realized it existed."

But I'm actually glad we have this place now that I think of it. Back on halfchan we were pretty restricted in what we could talk about, not only because of shitty mods but also because there was just no place to discuss it on. Like how you couldn't discuss 6th gen games because /v/ didn't give a shit and they were too new for /vr/. Or maybe your topic doesn't fit in any board, then good luck trying to talk about it in the cesspit that was /b/ or among the whining faggots at /r9k/. Here, you can at least find or make a board to discuss what you want. Only problem is that these boards don't get nearly enough traffic as they used to, and once traffic drops low enough, everyone gives up on the board and it does completely.

I'm going to use this as an opportunity to shill this userscript. It keeps track of all the boards you have favorited and lets you know when there's new posts on them. The idea is that if enough people can easily see at any time when a board gets new posts, they can quickly reply to them and help keep the board active.

These things celebrate their 20th birthdays this year:

>The Dreamcast

>Penny Arcade

>Half-Life

>Starcraft

>Ocarina of Time

>Metal Gear Solid

>Sonic Adventure

>Spyro

The Grand Theft Auto series is now old enough to legally drink.

So is Quake.

And Quake 2.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has officially taken longer to release than Duke Nukem Forever. The same fifth graders who were playing KH2 are well on their way to graduate school now.

World of Warcraft turns fifteen years old next year. The same fifteen year old kids who were screeching at you in Ventrilo during those Molten Core raids are now thirty.

On that same note, Wrath turns ten this year.

If Niko Bellic were a living person, he would turn 40 this year.

Michael Townley would be 50.

Max Payne's wife and child have now been dead for twenty years.

The Left 4 Dead series is now a decade old.

So is Smash Bros. Brawl.

It's also been a decade since Age of Conan launched, and hilariously flopped.

Same with Spore.

A decade has also passed since Fallout 3's release, killing the fun of the

>oblivion with guns

threads.

For the old goonfags: The BoB alliance shenigans was a decade ago this coming year.

I don't think it's that Pokemon couldn't sustain a board, it's just that 8chan's population as a whole is a lot smaller than 4chan. As it was already stated, most of the website congregates around an actual handful of boards.

I somehow didn't think to look up /poke/ which at least has more traffic than the other boards I saw. The main reason I can think to even want a Pokemon board would be for trading. Fullderp works fine on /v/ (and would probably die on a smaller, more secluded board) and the porn can just go anywhere else, but trying to obtain hidden abilities can be such a pain in the ass on your own.

There's also the fact that many of us on 8chan who ever even played Pokemon have grown discontent with it for a long, long list of completely valid reasons, and only turbospergs like me still breed and train autistic dogs just because.

I hate what normalfags did to the internet and specifically halfchan.

It used to be a place for anormal people, outsiders, weirdos to gather and find likeminded people, something that was nearly impossible IRL. We had a community, a culture, a home.

Now people actually use virgin as an insult on halfchan /v/ when for many years we would call ourselves /v/irgins in an act of friendly self-derision. People regularly post their shitty girlfriend stories. And they actually tell people to "go outside" or "get a life". To add insult to injury the whole board quality has gone down the shitter.

I loved 4chan because it allowed me to escape these ignorant and judgemental normalfags but now they've taken over and destroyed everything.

They get corralled into places like /r/incels (or whatever the fuck it's called now), which are only allowed to exist because it saves leftists the trouble of having to cherrypick through youtube comments and halfchan posts to find examples of "male entitlement" that they can screencap and circlejerk over. Plus, it has the bonus of feeding these young guys crazy bullshit that encourages them to go postal on their school, which further validates the angry virgin narrative.

Because amidst lighthearted shitposting you'd still get tons of porn, gore, and shock threads, people calling each other niggers, faggots, and niggerfaggots (not like that part's changed), told to kill yourself, and being generally regarded as the "anus of the internet" didn't make the place sound all that desirable. While there were occasional newfags that showed up, the flow was manageable, and with /b/ being essentially the first port of call upon cuckchan, it fell to them to help weed out undesirables. The ones that could tolerate such could be molded into proper posters, and those that got offended would get bombarded by more shit they hated so they'd leave. The flow was manageable for a number of years. But then you have the combination of failure to opsec in raids and media attention via the likes of Faux News' "Hackers on Steroids". The latter was considering fucking hilarious at the time, but ultimately harmed the state of imageboards, cuckchan in particular. See webm related if you haven't yet, and put yourself in the shoes of a shitty underageb& seeing it on the evening news with your parents.

Same… all of them are gone. My schools all had really distinct comfy neo-classical architecture and interesting exteriors and floorplans, too. I can remember walking through each of them pretty well.

My HS diploma has this really neat sketch drawing of the exterior of the school as it was when I left, and it was all demolished and replaced by generic glass and steel just a few years afterward.

On the one hand I'm sad, but on the other it feels special that those places exist only in my memory now and cannot be tainted further. They are mine and my classmates alone.

FUCKING THIS. Kikes so hell bent on making public school a fucking system. Everything seems so dry and bureaucratic. Schools had character back then. Hallowed halls of academia where kids weren't forced into learning, but it was expected from them. Today it seems like schools are trying to cater to the lowest common denominator nigger on the street and try hopelessly to teach him at least something, forcing the standards to drop down to accommodate them. School quality drops along with the demographics. You ever see one of those Detroit inner city nigger schools? It's hopeless. Just let the ghouls do what they want and die in alleyway.

And I'm the living example of what you wrote. While I do remember how me and the other kids used to play outside, even late at night, these memories are becoming more and more distant because almost right after 9/11 it all suddenly ended. I barely remember my childhood anymore - a few events and some things that were common back then like cassette tapes and VHS, but that's about it. Through most of my teenage years I was taught not to trust anyone, assume everyone is an enemy and always be ready to get your shit kicked in. As such, throughout mid/high school everyone was on their own. It got to the point that trusting even your friends, putting your guard down and not expecting to get stabbed in the back became an alien concept to me. It hurts much more knowing that it used to be different. There were movies, cartoons and sometimes anime on the TV - not anymore, not even on weekends. Now it's all news, politics and talk shows reminding me 24/7 about how fucked up the world is.

With alternative sites that might crop up, you're also stuck with not only trying to get viewers to use it instead of jewtube, but people to even upload to it when they stand to get more clicks just doing what they have been doing. And then there's the fact that jewgle also controls their own search engines and can always put their own favorable sites before your own.

As much as I appreciate independent points of view, I miss the days when threads could exist before some sperg started ranting about the blacks and Jews at every possible opportunity. Trolling/shitposting used to mean pretending to be dumb, not unironically wrecking a board because you can't keep your opinions to yourself for 5 seconds. Sadly that's what got attention and the cat's out of the bag now.

I came here after gamergate exposed how dumb and controlled halfchan was and since moot left there's nothing to return to. I like the slower pace of this place.

Pinning down the timeline of everything has been difficult in recent years due to the glut of bullshit constantly coming out. I could pin down events with things like "after the Ninja Turtles movie came out, but before Tiny Toon Adventures premiered". That would plant it in mid-1990. Now, what do you have? An unending parade of undifferentiated trash.

Make a text file timeline, and fill in events and product or movie releases or something, to narrow down the dates. Also school years, and other things you could use to bracket everything in. "During Xth grade, after Y movie came out, but before summer," or something.

>>15002707

You can't complain about /pol/, then credit Gamergate for opening your eyes, because if it had, you'd see who was funding the campaign against people who just wanted to play video games in peace. No rational person just gets a bug up his or her ass and decides "dem goofygolfers is rayciss muh soggy knees", it takes money and coordinated effort to weave a media narrative.

>after all this site is just another vain attempt to escape the inevitable.

>he posts this after claiming that there is even a fucking chance that any alternative sites to JewTube and Faceberg will ever be viable

Blatant doublethink aside, at least you finally see where we're coming from.

>calls someone retarded

>is to dumb to see his own shitty logic is being turned against him

Not my fault you're a kike that claims "just give up goy" is equivalent to some sort of redpill.

I'm not trying to redpill, because if you read the fucking thread everyone has already given up. We will fucking never have any positive experiences ever again, and that's fucking final.

21 here, I've felt your pain from around the time my balls dropped

>all the old mods for games you liked have probably been lost for 6 or 7 years

Thank you for reminding me, racing games in particular got hit the fuck hard in the days just before everyone stopped saying "two thousand and x" for the year rather than "twenty x". Racesimcentral, where many of the ovg/ogc darlings thrived back in the day got wiped out once the drives crashed in 2008 and 2009. I remember playing Generally on my first computer when I was 10 and was absolutely devastated when that site went down. From there on in I made it my goal to collect what was left and after a couple more years branched out to other games of the genre I used to play.

Even now as we speak, many mods for certain early EA racers namely NFS3 back when cars/tracks were still hosted on EA's FTP server and Sports Car GT are only available in private collections, data rotting away on CDs from oldfags who never heard of online storage. Only now am I being trusted enough by my family to get a Paypal and buy copies of those fucking things before it's too late. This information deserves to be free as it once was. And one day it all will. All you have to do is start a small archive of what still exists and build from there. Get contact info of old mod creators, see if they still work. Find dedicated forums. Scour Wayback captures of old personal websites and see if they picked up zips, loose files and flat textures because occasionally they do.

One day historians will recognize the cultural holocaust that was the early Internet and what corporations did to it. It is the 'silent films' of the 21st century.

Luckily some of those sites have been brought back-such as Filefront/gamefront getting bought by moddb. The interface is shit compared to the old site, but *all* of the mods are pretty much there. Honestly, it's the mods posted in forums and hosted on some flavor of the week file-hosting service that are in the most danger. I should probably start archiving the mods I've got.

>everyone has already given up.

You perhaps, but I certainly haven't. It's going to take a lot more than an id-hopping cuckchanner to make me give up.

It requires JS for dynamic sites.

So it should still be possible to build an image board on zeronet then correct? I know the GG thread has a bunker already set up there, but I believe that one does require JS to function.
