Morrowind is a pretty good game, but you might enjoy oblivion more, despite everything. Oblivion's design choice to level everything (and I do mean everything) surrounding the player is a bit heinous, but ultimately there are some neat experiences to be had and it kept my attention for a while. Morrowind on the other hand is a lot more rewarding, but a bit more punishing to newcomers. It plays like a pen and paper rpg in that it is less about your skill that determines success and more about the skill of your character. If you go with morrowind, I urge you to test a few character builds before continuing. For a lot of the game, you will rely on your selected skills to succeed with the skills you left by the wayside almost unusable, so whatever you pick you better like.
Oblivion has the best expansions of any Elder scrolls games too.
Oblivion is comfier than Morrowind and you probably like it more.
But Morrowind is the first title in the gaming series post 3D. I would try Morrowind first. Make you own class. Start with Endurance and Luck and pick at least 1 skill for every attribute, but don't pick all the skills of an attribute.
There now you know how to make the best possible classes in Morrowind and Oblivion.
When you play Oblivion and Skyrim also install a leveled item mod to fix the worst mechanic in any RPG ever.

Oblivion requires more mods to turn into a game that isn't shit. Morrowind blows it out of the water if both are vanilla but I'll be controversial and say that properly delevelled/modded Oblivion as good as Morrowind, just in very different ways.

Get Oblivion if you want a game that you can tailor to your tastes.

If you're going to go Morrowind, use openMW. It's more stable.

Only if you consider the main quest. Oblivion still has the best quests in the series. (better than Morrowind's fetch quests and Skyrim's let down faction quests that amount to "do 10 chores and we'll promote you to head of the organization".)
In Oblivion every guild questline felt special and like you were actually having to advance in an organization. From the Thieves Guild foreshadowing the identity of the Gray Fox in a random small quest you have to do early on to the mages guild where you have to do a bunch of chores early on in each city that later play a part much later on when you deal with the necromancer cult. Or the Dark Brotherhood where they had extremely great quests like the one where you fake someone's death as opposed to kill them or the one where you have to kill someone and make it look like an accident.
By comparison all of Daggerfall's quests were just "go do this randomly generated thing". All of Morrowind's were "go get this and come back" or "go kill these guys and come back" and Skyrim's were just "go to this dungeon and kill some Draugr and come back".

Archery is viable in both games, but it isn't fun in Morrowind. Oblivion archery requires moving around and picking when to shoot, whereas Morrowind archery is just standing and shooting as fast as your fatigue allows.
Investing in your base Acrobatics is worthless for getting to high places. In Morrowind, you'll get much more mobility out of Alteration (providing Jump, Levitate, and Slowfall effects) or Enchant (adding these effects to your equipment). In Oblivion, you don't really have any options for reaching high places.

oblivion was garbage when it came out but many years (and several GBs worth of mods) later it's actually kind of decent as a compromise between an action game and a RPG. you will probably spend A LOT of time modding it though. and I really mean a lot. there are mods for practically everything, iirc there is a modular modpack that changes almost every square centimeter of the wilderness adding a lot more detail, vegetation, fauna, etc (making the forests quite thick) you will also want mods to remove the loading screens when leaving/entering cities, and you can also get mods to make the cities bigger and add more detail. you will need to spend some time browsing tesnexus, downloading and setting up everything to make sure everything is compatible. last time i played it was back in 2013 after skyrim and it was an enjoyable experience

>better combat gameplay

>the ai does a lot more than just simply stand around
>better graphics with more details if that is your thing
They are both good but I would still choose Morrowind over it since its got one of the best fantasy worlds in all of gaming history to me. The game is saved on its world because if it was just a mediocre stereotypical Tolkein fantasy setting it wouldn't be remembered nearly as much today. Would have been great if the entirety of Morrowind was explorable but I guess we will just have to wait until they maybe ever want to revisit that again. In general Morrowind is more of a hardcore RPG than Oblivion with it leaving more to the imagination. You can also join more guilds than in Oblivion.
Oblivion sadly has some pretty crap cartoon graphics but I would still say that is its main flaw in an otherwise solid game. Yeah it has tons of other issues as well like not being able to kill key characters in the story ever but they kind of had no choice due to the radiant AI.
As for Skyrim, I honestly thought it played the best of them all with combat. With this franchise, as the combat got better the overall complexity for the most part declined to a more casual experience. You get spoonfed much more in the later games then in Morrowind. Even though Morrowind had too much useless copy pasted text boxes with NPC characters that were very robotic and felt lifeless. Morrowind still though is more of an RPG and for lack of a better way of putting it, more of a thinking mans game. All games have excellent music.
Combat
Skyrim > Oblivion > Morrowind
Immersion
Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion
So depends on what you want out of these games. If you want immersion Morrowind is your game. Combat you go with Skyrim. Quests you probably go Oblivion.

Its combat was awful. I can understand if someone likes the simplicity of it but even then it still could have been better. Hexen had simple melee but was much more fun to play. Ranged combat sucked for it to. Magic was the best part of the combat in Morrowind but even then it wasn't anything great. Just decent at best thanks to the spell making you can do and enchantments of gear.

>All Bethesda has to do is just copy the mechanics from Dark Messiah and it'll win every game of the year award in the century
This is especially confusing why they haven't done this since they own Arkane studios now. They were acquired more than a year prior to Skyrim's release. So there was plenty of time to tweak the combat to be better.
Even then Skyrim started development well after Dark Messiah released. Since it released the same year as Oblivion. So they had tons of time to straight up copy Dark Messiah's combat. Since that was one of the biggest things reviewers picked up on when they compared both games was Dark Messiah was much more linear than Oblivion but the combat was enormously better.
Then again maybe Bethesda really was out of touch considering they said the main reason they bought Arkane studios was one of the higher ups at Bethesda liked Arx Fatalis. There seems to be a pattern with Arkane where they'll release a game around the same time as Bethesda. And while Bethesda will release a Jack of all Trades Master of None sort of game (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) Arkane will instead release a much more polished and focused title that less people will play but will age far better. (Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah, Dishonored).
