After beating FF4 on the PSP, try the DS version. It's different enough mechanically to feel fresh, and the difficulty in general is higher due to the enemy scripting being tweaked signficantly. The art style is a hard sell, though, and can make it hard to get invested in the plot.

If you end up wanting to try 12, try to stick to the main story. There's a lot of side content, but doing all of it as soon as possible kills the story's pacing pretty hard.

It's pretty fun solo. For the first one it's a good idea though to have a couple of GBA + link cables on hand so you can transfer money and items between two characters since there is no bank in the game.

FF2 was considered the hardest RPG ever made when it came out, and it held onto that title fairly strongly for many years after

leveling your stats is done in the SaGa style (how appropriate that the director fo FF2 went on to make SaGa) where continually using an action raises its governing stat. However, this makes for ridiculous grinding if you suddenly realize that you haven't been using magic all game and suddenly need it.

This one's hard to explain in any succinct manner. After the switch to multiplat, the base game had to be radically reformed to work with the multidisc format of the X360. The result was a bit of a mess with nearly 2 games' worth of content cut out and the dumbest excuses possible given.

13-1

Essentially a linear corridor until you reach Pulse wherein you are given 2 linear corridors and a sidepath. The whole game feels like a giant dungeon path that's not terribly fun to play.

That said, the combat does have a degree of depth to it and anyone who says they beat the whole game without touching the paradigm system is lying (progress-based level caps and bosses designed to thwart stagnancy help with that)

You'd basically be playing it to get context for 13-2

13-2

Remember how 13-1 was a fairly shit corridor? Well 13-2 is fucking Chrono Break! Yes, I fucking love this entry in the series

Right from the start we're off on a trip through time to fix the future. Tons of places to go and tons of orders to go to them in and tons of sidequests along the way. Heroes from 13-1 play a non-central role as the focus shifts to Lightning's sister Sarah and some brat from the fucking future named Noel fighting through time to fix paradoxes that connect events between eras so they can prevent humanity's destruction in 700 years. You thought changing the past to fix the future was cool shit in Chrono Trigger? Now you can change the future to fix the past

And that fucking ending! And that 100% ending!

Nice job breaking it hero. After 13-2, Lightning is off on her own trip to try and salvage what she can before the end. Notable for tons of costumes and ending in Paris

Here are my comments on your list.

I played FF3 on the DS and although the story, music, etc. are not as good as 4 or 5, I still had a great time. I'd recommend you play this if there's a good DS emulator out there.

I'd also recommend you play FFVIII. It's an excellent game with a great soundtrack. The story isn't that great compared to 6, 7, 9 or 10 but for some people it clicks with them.

Lastly, play FF10. It's criminally underrated because it has a lot of memes around it. The main character's hair and chest are faggy, and some of the English voice acting is bad, but there's a Japanese version you can torrent with everything translated and you can play that on a ps2 emulator. Whatever you do, don't skip this one. It has one of the best stories despite being corny. It has heartwrenching music and cutscenes. Don't gimp yourself skipping this.

I'd also recommend you play FF11 when you're done your marathon. It's an excellent mmo. It has a lot of my favorite Final Fantasy music in it. It's very cosy and you'll have a good time. The problem with FF1 remakes post PS1 origins is that they're locked into easy mode. Ethers, cheaper shops, exp gain accelerated to the point where you get over leveled even if you run from 90% of encounters. There's absolutely something wrong with tearing out the vancian system if that's what the game was balanced around.

Play origins: fixes the bugs, leaves out the babymode bullshit.

I owned, beat, and genuinely enjoyed VIII, and I can say it's maybe mid-tier at best. The music, graphics, cutscenes, and Triple Triad are all great, but the Draw/Junction system is lacking at the best of times and just bad at the worst. The plot can be a bit confusing at times, too, and there is a lot of shit to miss if you aren't thorough (especially Triple Triad cards and side quests), but it's not the worst in the series by far.

If you don't understand how leveling works, you can shoot yourself in the foot, but if you do, the game is piss-easy. Enemies level up with you, but their health and stats only vary by level, not your stats; junctioning and equipping proper weapons and Guardian Forces and waiting to level until you get permanent stat boost abilities later in the game makes you very strong relative to enemies, and only leveling one character makes you untouchable.

I do recommend VIII, but it's okay. Worth playing, but it's no VI by a long shot.

I played FF2 late last year and it honestly blows my mind that you are recommending it. The most stale, boring, and shortest JRPG I've ever played. I can't even remember the character names. The story is just Star War's "Empire bad. Niggers must beat empire, but empire has no special characters besides emperor". Only good thing was the weird leveling but at the final two dungeons it just becomes a grindfest to get all your shit properly leveled.
