I'm looking for something to replace my old toaster laptop, but I'm a brainlet who knows nothing about building a PC or what I should get. What's the best PC I can build/buy for under $1000 that would be able to play most modern games on at least medium settings?

first of all go to /tech/ consumer advice for more details. quickly though, you'll want a ryzen quad core paired with a 580 with an ssd for 1080p gaming for well under 1000. If you are using a higher resolution then you need different parts.

There used to be a hardware thread on here last week. So I'll spoonfeed the newfag.

These are rough guides. Follow these outlines but feel free to deviate based on your needs.

/tech/ is anti-technology, they're all retarded. Don't bother

Just stick with an AMD Ryzen

I think the APUs are out already, in which case its worth it because you have just enough GPU power to get you by before dedicated GPUs normalize in price thanks to miners. Also try to go for 8GBs DDR4 minimum

Don't buy AMD, you'll regret it.

I've got a lenovo ideapad y700 and it wrks gr8 for the ones I play

The currently on sale version with 16 gigs will work even better than the 2015 one i've got

More or less this. Ryzen quad core though, not so much. A 2600/1600 is a far better investment for little increase. 580 would be a great card, but it is horribly overpriced right now, so I'd much rather suggest the 1060 or 1050 Ti despite being an AMD user.

RAM is also badly overpriced, and is one of the reasons why this is the single worst time to build a PC I have seen the past 10 years.

Rough guide,

1600/2600 - 180$

8gb RAM - 80$

B350 mobo - 70$

reliable 500w PSU - 50-80$

1tb HDD - 30-40$

1050 Ti - 180$

case - 40$

Comes in around 650-700 bucks adding up stuff like peripherals.

However, I'd suggest waiting for next year and to see what prices will be like then. Buying a PC at this moment is a bad, bad idea and if you just want to play games, might as well get a console for 200 bucks and be done with it.

How come? Their CPUs are the best you can get for the price. Their 570 and 580 would be great deals, if it wasn't for the fact that they are so overpriced due to mining and RAM shortage/"shortage."

/tech/ aren't any good for actual tech advice beyond sperging about linux distros.
