Basically the universe begins and the very first form of life to emerge are giant, titanic energy sucking jellyfish called the C'tan who would suck energy from stars and cause them to supernova millions of years before their time, but they ignored biological life. The first race in the Milky Way galaxy to master immortality and become so advanced as to create life itself are called the old ones. Nobody knows what the old ones look like but they are described as being beings of light and darkness. They pissed off a spacefaring race knwon as the Necrontyr who had extremely short lifespans because of their home planet being bombarded with radiation constantly and every planet they happened to find and colonize was equally shit. The old ones wouldnt give up the secrets of immortality to the Necrontyr so they ended their own civil war to go to war with the Old Ones. Since the old ones knew of the Warp (an alternate dimension influenced by the emotions of sentient and sapient life) they were able to use webway gates to BTFO the Necrontyr so the Necrontyr became so salty they defaulted to the C'tan. The C'tan could kill stars so even the Old ones had issues so they started seeding life such as humans, the Orks (then known as the Krork) and the Eldar (space elves with psychic powers). The humans didnt do much, but the Krork and Eldar did their bit and eventually the Necrontyr let the C'tan lord over them and they ended up being sadistic fuckheads to the Necrontyr and convinced them to imprison themselves in android bodies to be immortal but they lost their individuality in the process and only the rulers retained some form of consciousness and self. But they used this shit to nearly wipe out the old ones but the eldar heldfast and used their warp gods (psychic powers are spawned from the Warp) to beat them and win.

When the Eldar won the battle they ended up not caring about what little old ones were left and became assholes. So now to humanity. Basically human civilization expands and advanced how it did in our timeline, except in the neolithic era all the shamans who were psychically sensitive to the Warp committed mass suicide to amass their power into a single man, The Emporer of Mankind. He was born in Turkey, so he's technically a roach, but after his father was murdered by his uncle he burst his uncle's heart with a mere thought, he then knew he was to become great. So he became different historical figures and then humanity progressed all the way into the year 30,000 A.D. where they basically were so strong they could kick the shit out of the Eldar and had spaceships that shot blackholes and every goddamned device had A.I. in it. Unfortunately this was not to last, see in the 40K universe the Warp is basically hell due to the War in Heaven between the Old Ones and Necrontyr (it took millions of years to conclude). So basicallyhell is real and malevolent gods are spawned by emotions, well the Eldar were so happy with their lot in life they could bring themselves back from the dead perpetually and had machines that spawned whatever their wanted even if it was something that didnt make sense. They became bored and then became degenerate to the point where the emotions of degeneracy (getting off to pain, BDSM, torture, etc) birthed a new God in the Warp, Slaanesh. The other gods Nurgle (disease and rot), Khorne (rage and war), and Tzeetnch (cunning, magic, science, deception, and plots) were birthed in 29,000. FTL in the 40K universe by all races save for the necrons is done by emitting a Gellar Field and traveling throuh the Warp btw. The Gellar Field protects from dangerous shit in there like Bloodletters.
When Slaanesh was born it fucked EVERYTHING UP. No one could FTL anymore which means the colonies and Earth were all cut off. Some prospered anyway because resources, some fell into despair and nuked themselves, Earth held on but it became Mad Max. This is when the Emperor, a powerful motherfucker that could probably boil oceans with a thought, came out and did something about it.

I should also mention that humanity fell not only because of the warp storms but also because of the Men of Iron (basically a typical Robot Rebellion) and the psychers breaking out that used the Warp to terrorize people. Aliens in the 40K universe hate every other alien besides themselves btw, so there is no Mass Effect Citadel-like thing going on, sorry. This caused humanity to hate all aliens in return. This age was called the Dark/Golden Age of Technology.
The Emperor hated religion, and saw that over the thousands of years of humanity's civilization it had corrupted and ruined too much shit, so he started the Unification Wars to unify all of humanity under one banner. Anyway the Mad Max Immortan Joes were called techno-barbarians and the Emperor while powerful didnt want to take them on by himself so he wiped the floor with tribe after tribe until he had enough to use his brilliant mind to make Thunder Warriors, super soldiers that were the precursors to Space Marines. These guys were super strong, super fast, and can take heretical amounts of punishment and keep fighting like nothing happened such as losing an arm or leg. These Thunder Warriors helped the Emperor take over the Earth and then he went on to Mars to assimilate the fools there. Sadly Mars had turned into a tech-cult, worshipping machines liek the Church of the Broken God from SCP. Luckily the Emperor has the crazy Warp powers I told you about and that includes boosting his Charisma score by +300. He convinced the leaders that he was the Omnissiah, or the 'Machine God' and they joined his cause. Mars was important because both before the Golden Age of Tech was a production powerhouse with arcologies and massive structures pumping out war machines and commerce vehicles at a rate you cannot conceive of.
When he assimilated Mars he basically won the Great Crusade so he wanted to nip it in the bud and create genetic sons who would be almost as powerful as him to serve as his generals to take back the galaxy: the Primarchs. Sadly the Chaos Gods in the Warp had different plans and when he finished growing them in their vats they Warped (heh, get it?) them away from him to different planets across the galaxy. He sensed them still because he's strong like that and decided he stil had genetic material to improve Thunder Warriors so he killed the them off and created the Space Marines. These guys could spit acid in a pinch, run faster, were super strong (not as strong as thunder warriors though), could survive in the vaccum of space, process poison as food, eat an animal to get its memories and more. They had armor of ceramite, harder and denser than any material in other sci-fi universes and used bolters (automatic grenade launchers) that would break a normal man's arm upon firing.
It is with these warriors that the Emperor would enact the Great CRUSADE and find his sons.

Tyranids are alot worse than the Zerg. Zerg simply infest planets and take them over. They aren't very complicated in how they do it, and their leadership is fragmented, with their hivemind basically dead and different brood mothers making their own little kingdoms. A planet can be taken back from the Zerg.
Tyranids don't infest planets for the sake of infesting planets though. They strip them of all life and energy, right down to the molten core, and they turn that into more biomass that they will repurpose into more tyranids. They don't come in a mere horde either, they come in numbers that are endless, and the actual number of them in existence is supposedly enough to make the galaxy barren of all life aside from their own. And even better, their hivemind is so insanely powerful it manifests its own psychic powers without tapping into the warp, which it infact blocks out, and it is on such a level that it can manage the countless numbers of bugs under it. Xirs birth created they Eye of Terror (giant warp first) in the middle of the Eldar Empire, swallowing their core worlds. Also, xir bound every eldars soul so it devours them upon their death.
The only Eldar to escape the destruction of their empire where those who realized thnigs were becoming too degenerate and left on giant continent-ships (craftworld eldar), those who lived on new terraformed world (primitive exodite eldar) and those who escaped in the webway city of Comogorrah (dark eldar).
