It's been a while since I played the game but looking back it seems I beat the normal mode of the game with everyone but the Sorcerer, Bard, and Jester. These are characters that have very low starting max health. The other problem, particularly for the Sorcerer, is that different characters level up at different rates. The pitch of the Sorcerer is that you get a ton of power (high mana reserves, maybe some damage, I forget exactly) in exchange for low health, but it's not just low health, it's also a very low exp rate. When you level up you get a bonus card as well as boosts to max health and max mana. So the Sorcerer gets very few of the bonus cards and very few little extra max health from level ups while also starting with shit health. Incidentally the different gains in max health make the Seer's pitch a load of shit too. He starts with a low stats but can level up much more than the average character. However since the max health he gets each level up is nearly half that of a normal character he never really makes up the difference in starting health, let alone surpasses it. He does get a lot of cards though and isn't that terrible.
With regards to the Vampire, I don't remember him being that difficult to complete the game with. He can be awkward since you can't spend too much time exploring and I think since he restores health when an enemy is killed bosses can be a problem. But he starts with a huge max health pool and that's important.
I also remember the Cleric being another character that's quite a bit powerful than the default characters. I think the Templar was good too, but the card he has that makes more enemies seemed like it was a problem, maybe I was just sloppy though.
Main problem I remember with the game was that a lot of the unlocks were just shit. Once you unlocked everything your pool of bonuses on level up would be bloated with a lot of junk you really didn't want, so you'd have to get lucky to actually get a good character. There's some good unlocks too of course so you're not necessarily just better off starting from scratch. A lot of other roguelikes seem to have the same problem with being bloated with useless unlocks.
