Which Metal Slug should I play first?

Also, which one do you consider the best and why?

Personally I have fond childhood memories playing MS 3 at the arcade but I have no objective parameter to justify my choice.

I just downloaded Anthology out of commodity but if the port is really crappy I'll probably switch.

I havent actually played any Metal Slug on MAME but it cant be any worse than the ports of mobile ports.

When I played Anthology, MS1 would have serious input lag. If it's the same for you, it would be worth playing the first game elsewhere.

Can confirm it does on the PS2 version at the very least. I didn't notice any lag on my end, although I only played it twice briefly on my CRT. Maybe it's different on other HDTVs or my eyes are playing tricks on me. To be honest, maybe I really should emulate them later on and see for myself

Start from the first and run through em all. A lot of shallow graphic whores who've never single-credit cleared one of the games much less play them for score usually descend on Metal Slug threads and try to tell you that Metal Slug 3 is the best for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with gameplay. These people should be ignored.

I consider the most mechanically sound Metal Slug to be one that's not even on the collection: Metal Slug 7. It takes all the nice ideas introduced in 6 and adds a ton of great bosses without having many of the pitfalls that bring down other games in the series in one way or another. It's a shame SNK appears to have squandered the talent that put this game together, I was expecting a major revival in Metal Slug to come out of it, but it seems it was more likely to have been its final hurrah.

be sure to play the Japanese PS2 version. The american release has slowdown, & the wii version removed blinking bosses so you can't tell if ou're hitting them because of "seizures".

Just play them in order. Keep in mind X is just a revamped 2, with a few tweaks such as less slowdown, graphical changes, additional weapons, and different boss placement. That said, there are many who still prefer 2 over X, so do your research on which one to play, or just try out both and decide for yourself. 3 is a bit overrated, as it becomes a bit of a slog in the final stage, especially without a buddy, but still an action-filled, visual marvel. 4 is the weakest and least creative of the series, as it was the first Metal Slug game not developed by Nazca, but still might be worth your time if you're a fan of run n guns.

Not really, 7's bosses are not the best in the series imo and inferior to 6. Since we knew that 6's and 5's problem is the short length before anyone says that 5's slide move is a terribad idea, just stop for a moment and think since when do you actually need to crouch + jump at the same time 7 in particular barely brought anything new to the table compared to 6's innovation. Sure it expands upon the mechanics but it wasn't as big as 6 did.

Ergo, 6 > 7

Whenever you need to shoot downwards at something the easiest thing to do is to just hold down, jump, and shoot. Only that's not what happens when you do that in 5. And 5 still does have a number of situations where firing downward on something or jumping over something while shooting at it can get you out of a jam, the start of mission 4 for instance.
