Shit like augmentations and mechanical prostheses existed since fucking Middle ages if we don't count really lame shit even longer before that. As far as I remember, robot arms started getting popular in media after the 80's (thanks to stuff like Space Cobra and Combattler V (It has a fucking V here, too)).

I think that the devs are just out of original ideas, hence lots of them using robot arms n' shit.

One armed swordsmen are a common trope in Japanese media. Also often paired with being one eyed and then also applied to characters that aren't necessarily swordsmen. See Guts, Zero, Baiken, Venom Snake etc.

Don't call it a robot arm. It's a mechanical prosthetic whose design surprisingly happens to accurate to that era. Using cables to move the "double hook claw" hand open/close.

A (modern day) robot arm would have some sort microcomputer circuitry hooked up to electronic sensors to react to things like inputs from nerve endings in the amuptee's stump (like closing/opening the hand grip for holding things)

I noticed this too, it's like how grappling hooks were in a bunch of games around the same time. Japan has a thing for abnormal arms though, I don't think there's anything significant about this. Maybe if a bunch of Western games had it.
