Seems like a really weird coincidence. why does it keep happening?

?
uh no, it was the boss's first phase and you could argue that the final section after you beat the boss is also a shump without the shooting.
It's also because shumps are pure test of skill if there's no rng and/or gay shit.
To add on that list of final level is X, kirby return to dreamland had the final level & 2nd final boss to be a shump & planet robobot was littered with shump sections.

I think its fun, sure half genie hero isn't as fun as pirates curse but its pretty good.
More importantly why are we bumplocked?

>final level is a scrolling shooter
Fuck yeah.
Seems kind of silly to do it in a game that isn't a scrolling shooter though. Usually it ends up either a) a crappy scrolling shooter stage or b) an extremely shallow and unsatisfying scrolling shooter stage because obviously the developers can't make it too complicated or deviate too much from the normal gameplay.
Why is this thread bumplocked?

oh yeah EA had their conference. Thankfully I haven't bought an EA game in almost a decade so I dont really care.
Probably, honestly I am more surprised platinum has't just made a whole shoot em up yet, most of kamiyas games have shmup levels in them you would think he really wants to make one.

It's just a way to keep things from getting stale I guess.
I remember Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death turning into a shump halfway into the game. Was a pretty weird transition

Granted i did get it wrong, it wasn't the stage before but the first phase of the boss that was a shmup. There still was a shoot em up in the finale and the other 2 were right. I just expected people to give examples and have 1 or 2 anons give a good reason why it happens.
Funny enough that is what the thread was, anon even gave me an explaination. >>14937846

And then the thread got bumplocked for some reason I cant figure out.

Now that I think about it harder, shumps are actually rather deep but honestly shump as a genre is very broad in the same way a beat em up is. With the devil may cry shump section it's a weird crossover of something like star fox, older shumps (space invader, galaga, etc.) and more refined shumps like darius (which kamiya is a big fan of) or later gradius games, due to the complex (but easy to dodge) shot patterns the boss shits out, the only reason i eve bother pointing out older shumps is the fact that a bit of accuracy is involved and you can't get any closer to the enemy than the fixed distance, when you're far away, you do move forward but stop at a certain distance, because you're at a fixed distance there's an odd amount of accuracy involved where you have to 'snipe' the boss's weak points, however there's no fixed amount of bullets like older shumps due to hardware limitations or genuine decision (which isn't bad but hard to convey without being deliberate on the head). I guess the meter is the equivalent to a screen-clearing bomb that builds on attacking the boss.

Because shmups are a tried-and-true gameplay style that aren't hard to make, especially for just a level or two. It's a way to switch up gameplay and easily increase scale. Going from hero, to hero in space ship, is a very obvious ramping up of action. You can pull away the camera and make bosses larger than could fit in normal gameplay view.

I'm pretty sure most Kirby games do it too, or at least fairly often. DMC is a Kamiya game, he just likes putting shmups near the end of a game. One sort of exception is Wonderful 101 were practically every Operation has at least one shmup section, but pretty much the only good one is the Space Harrier clone. Why he hasn't bugged Sega to make a new Space Harrier or something is beyond me. As for why so many games end on or near a shmup section, I don't fucking know.

Kirby Dream Land 3 and 64 had shmup secret last bosses.
It just works.
It means that the last boss is an entity so powerful you can't beat it by normal means, and it's represented not only in the narrative but in the gameplay aspect too.

I hate it when any game has a final boss/battle that introduces new gameplay mechanics out of nowhere. The final boss should put everything you learned in the game to the test, not some random gimmicky bullshit.
