Just started Chapter 1, should I stick with the generics or eventually dump them for Rad, Lavian and Alicia? Don't feel motivated to continue if Ramza's the only relevant character in leveling.

You can beat the game using nothing but generics + whatever story character is required for that specific section without issue if you want to go that route. If you want to abuse the overpowered unique characters, you can always have them cannibalize the generics later on.

Don't get too attached to your current generic members. More guests will come along to join your party later and they're WAY better.

Chapter 2 gives you a completely new party, iirc. Filled with powerful guest characters.

>using uniques

Have fun with half of a party with sword skills for the later part of the game. Dancers and mimes all the way, baby.

07aa27 No.14928601

Uniques are good for a first play through if you need your hand held. Play with generics or self made restrictions to make the game more challenging and more fun.

9ff797 No.14928623

Having a good offensive or defense generic caster will do wonders for your team. The story characters that join you are pretty decent, but they'll still need skills from other jobs to perform adequately, so having your generics provide them with bleed-off JP will also help.

And most importantly: USE MULTIPLE SAVE FILES.

Rad, Lavian and Alicia are pretty much semi-generics; they're not unique characters with unique classes like Cid, Agrias or Mustadio and the like. Anyway, you don't need to ditch generics, since generics with good skill sets pull their own weight through the game if you raise them right.

Also, keep checking and investing into Ramza's Squire skill tree every now and then once you complete acts, since he obtains pretty great unique Squire skills as he progresses through the story.

Rad, Lavian and Alicia are generics that don't have any special stats or abilities if I remember right, the only reason to use them is RP purposes really. Generics are viable all the way through the game but most people phase them out for named characters in chapters 2, 3 and 4 due to their special job classes.

The best tip I can give you is to make Ramza a chemist long enough to learn auto-potion so you don't get trapped in a bullshit fight late in chapter 3 with shit skills. The translation is a bit messy but the plot of the game is pretty great.

Do you mind if I use this thread to talk about Tactics Ogre too?

I recently started it on the PSP (Let Us Cling Together) and I'm kind of having doubts about it because of how much more autistic it appears to be compared to FFT. I'm not saying it's bad - I'm just not sure it's my cup of tea.

My main complaint is how much customization you're expected to do manually. That's fine when you're accustomed to the mechanics, but it's literally dumping a shitton of stuff on me right from the start and the tutorials aren't all that great (literally info dumped on you in the middle of the first battle).

Equipment is a bitch to manage (seemingly), the auto-equip seems to ignore what the character is supposed to use (I.e. a guy with a spear got changed to an axe, is that OK?).

TL;DR; does anyone have some starting tips for me?

Tried it, felt the same, went back to FF:T and did a monster challenge run instead.

Going to ride your comment. I tried starting up LuCT twice but each time I just get bored of the combat. It just feels so tedious and unpleasant compared to FFT and other SRPGs like Vandal Hearts 2 or even crappy ones like Kamidori. Does the combat "feel" better as you progress or is just more of the same. For reference the furthest I got was trying to save someone surrounded by hostiles in a city. Except the enemies all ganged up on the target I'd try to save resulting in a Game Over because I could even close.

I'm glad to see I'm not just retarded. What's even worse is that I really love the look and feel of the UI and effects, and yet it still seems inferior to me personally compared to FFT.

Checking the wikia Rad has a bonus Hi-Potion ability and Lavian has better attack than the other generics. That's why I'm conflicted.

>>14928778

By the time you get through chapter 1, the generics you've been nurturing will be far, far ahead of the 3 stooges you get at the start of chapter 2. I've never had a playthrough where those 3 were used for anything other than free gear or bar mission bitches.

Tactics Ogre is fundamentally flawed due to the impossibly tedious crafting system and the lack of depth in the battle system, not to mention the fact that maps are too big and movement is too low on your units. You end up spending most of the game slowly moving your units towards the enemy forces.

It's a shame because the story is way better.

Funny, I beat the PS1 version ages ago, and I can't even remember there being a crafting system.

Generics can carry you through the entire game easily with enough training, but a lot of the special units you get later have some nifty classes and skills you can't get otherwise. I always end up keeping Cid and Beowulf around.

The PSP remake added it, among many other things.

9ff797 No.14929148

The only things more broken than Cid are the potion system in Morrowind and opening a console to activate godmode and noclip.

e80a54 No.14931504

I made a party of Ramza and 4 red chocobos once. It was pretty bananas especially since you can do it in chapter 1 with enough patience.
