Valve also removed knifes from the better and started to sell them later on as skins. Some of those knifes that you can buy on the market today where part of the beta back then. Also first competitive mm had no rage quit bans, people could just leave and rejoin the game and more importantly it was full of HUGE faggots. The people I have played with back then where probably worse than silver tier. Once valve added rage quit bans everything got better because now the super loses moved to unranked games.
Ohh, another cool addition to the game was insta 7 day bans that later on got removed because Reddit unintentionally killed their teammates. One good thing about Valve back then was that they listened to the community.

Well on a totally basic level no, it isn't they both want your phone number so they can identify you.
However, the difference of intent and what they'd do with the information is pretty different.
Valve wants your phone number so if you're the kind of person that can be used for marketing their software and lootcrates you can be monitored easier and when you don't seem to be useful in that way you get dumped into the slag pits to stew around with everyone else that has the potential to be poor for business and that's essentially the end of it.
Google wants your information to attack you as a private citizen if you're inconvenient politically to the company and it's goals, and beyond that they also want to control every aspect of your life and will attempt to manipulate other end users that can be matched to you and around you emotionally to try and put you in a particular emotional and physical state.

Cheats will always exist for this game. All it takes to bypass VAC is to write your cheats from scratch in asm and it's undetectable.
Really valve is just providing a solution to a problem that they've caused. The emphasis on ranked matchmaking just causes a cancerous mindset in the minds of players, everyone takes the game too seriously and become wannabe pros instead of just enjoying the fucking game.

It's to make it harder for people to create accounts to sell. They make a dota/CS:GO account (free/steam sale cheap) then have bots grind out the necessary time needed to play ranked, then grind out the rank and resell the account. It happens a lot in Russia where the economy is fucked.
