It's a different kind of input, you'd need a stylus and tablet in order to be close but the affordability of a DS definitely makes it far more desirable.

DS games are great but they're super easy. You can get a low end tablet for like $40 if you really don't like the idea of mouse

I played standard for a few years, but I don't think I can ever return. The scoring system just gets annoying after a while. Miss in the middle of a song? Dog shit score just reset. Miss at the very start or end? Ten billion PP you so good. Fuck that. I get that maintaining a combo is a skill, but it being the main score mechanic is pretty frustrating, especially when I'd get a way better play overall but have a way worse score just due to combo. Higher level maps can murder your hands/wrists too. Mania could be fun but I didn't like the way a lot of people mapped so I stopped playing that too.

7c993d (6) No.14921720

>>14921711

yeah but I already have a ds lite from a decade ago and an r4i gold with the wood firmware and every DS game I'd want to play on it with the ideal input method. EBA/ouendan is just a flick, tap and tap away

I played std for fun after I got sick of the scoring, but that also didn't last long since I switched to BMS instead.

>Higher level maps can murder your hands/wrists too.

If you're hurting yourself you either have really bad habits or are playing for way too long. Piano players have the same problem: http://pianomap.com/injuries/

Which keymode did you play in mania? You can try playing BMS for 7k or stepmania/etterna for 4k if you didn't like mania's charting style.

standard

>>14921714

I can't say I've played enough to give a shit about the scores yet, for now I'm just trying to at least complete harder maps, then maybe when I reach my skill ceiling I'll go for perfect combos and shit

ff4bae (3) No.14921833

>>14921788

>f you're hurting yourself you either have really bad habits or are playing for way too long

I would only play an hour or so at a time. It was probably using my wrist too much with a smaller area on my tablet.

>Which keymode did you play in mania?

I prefer 6 key. The music in BMS never interested me much. I played stepmania a bit but it never really grabbed me either. Now I'm mainly just playing Project Diva and DJMax for my rhythm gaming.

Enjoy standard while you can and arent getting too into the game, because its fun for what it is. The moment you actually start caring and knowing whats going on, you realise that the scoring system is the biggest fucking pile of garbage known to man. Good thing other games have better ones.

Went to play more Pump it Up today at the arcade since I got new shoes for that (old ones were breaking apart).

A bit heavier than the previous ones, but I can slide better and triple arrows are easy to hit.

Meanwhile I do still need to finish rewiring the custom wood/metal built pad I have for home-playing.

>>14939202

Removed or not, it still sets a pretty bad precedent. I do still play it very rarely, but I have it on a separate linux installation because the newer version of the linux intel driver breaks graphics. Said install is basically only for games that have this gfx issue.

The combo system is the best thing about the game, makes multiplayer less boring (until they fucked it up with score v2) and it changed to skill factor from being purely physical to involving a mental aspect. People complaining about the score system are simply scrubs who don't want to admit that they didn't have the nerves and skill to full combo a map so they try to make out that misses are due to "bad luck" and therefore the game is chance based

I don't know if anyone is against me posting top plays in these threads since nobody has spoken out about it yet, but i'll keep doing it in hopes of fetching the interest of the few people on /v/ who actually play video games.

Also, who is the best/favorite rhythm game player in your opinion? Mine's either Genesis or Chyoic.

14f6e5 (3) No.14945074

>>14921788

I believe common injuries that comes from playing rhythm games and video games in general stems more from bad posture than playtime. Like poor viewing angle for neck pain, and how flat your wrist and arms are against the desk.

Playing right after you wake up from sleeping on your hand is also a stupid idea. I pushed myself to play BMS after a bad night's sleep once and my wrists were fucked for the entire day in 30 minutes. Meanwhile on any other day I'd be able to play up to 7 hours or more on the insane scale.

Unlike many other generals, if someone enjoys one rhythm game they are much more likely to enjoy most other rhythm games.

>>14945208

Try starting out with either Stepmania (with the Etterna client) or Lunatic Rave 2 (also know as BMS). If you want more western and popular music you already know, play stepmania. If you want lots of original songs, try BMS. BMS is a little bit harder to setup and get into, but it's extremely satisfying when you reach a certain level of play. Check the link in the OP or google for info on how to set your shit up.

Common keyboard setups for kb players are usually a flat row of keys with spacebar for button 4 and a pinky finger for scratch, e.g. A S D Spc J K L then either Caps/Shift/; as scratch. If you're used to an IIDX controller you can swap Spc and J but keys 1-3 will depend on your playstyle.
