Supposed to be a horror game set in a hardcore, sex-and-gore, envelope-pushing Hell. Get raped by a titty demon while she rips out your heart, etc.
Then it got censored down to an M-rating and downgraded graphically until it looked like complete ass, in order to sell it on consoles, and was turned into a walking simulator. But the devs claimed that the PC version would get a patch to restore the cut content.
A few days before release someone in a fan-run D|scord purporting to be a dev said the patch was cancelled. On the day before release, the devs finally made an official admission that there would be no patch, claiming they would be sued and the studio shut down. They insisted it was only a few seconds of cutscene that was censored, but were promptly proven liars by people who demonstrated numerous other changes from the demo version. In one case blood was even changed from red to purple.
Since the game was sold on the premise and atmosphere rather than gameplay, and with what little atmosphere wasn't gutted ruined by the ugliness of the graphics, all that was left was a shitty walking sim. It flopped, and is currently sitting at 50% on Steam reviews.

Last night they promised to release the game uncut as intended from the start as a separate release. They ensured nobody who bought the game has to pay anything extra. They also fired the lead designer and are reworking alot of the game. Also will allow for mods and make the game even more intense than originally intended since it seems that is what people want. So maybe they are the first devs ever to accept they fucked up and intend to make their customers happy?
