since this came out. Has any game actually stepped forth to take the spot of heroes 3 ? Does anything even come close ?
Sure there are some tiny gems like battle brothers, but don't even come close to the scale and variety heroes offers.Later entries just seem like trash, since the transition to 3D hurt this type of game greatly.
We can go into tiny games like The Battle for Wesnoth, but they are overall inferior.
Is there anything that comes close ?

Nope.

I personally loved The Legends.
It's not as nearly detailed as HoMM3, but it has just enough variety in it to allow for some unusual strategies with different units.
You'll want to think thoroughly before picking any talents though, as fucking up your character build can really hurt you and maybe even force a restart.
The only other downside is the painfully slow animation speed even on the fast setting.
But overall, it's pretty good.
Armoured Princess is the sequel that kicks my ass any time of the day and I can't figure out how to beat it.
Maybe one day.

Wesnoth is pretty fun. It has a ton of mods for it that you can download using an in game browser and plenty of co-op campaigns. It is also challenging. Even on the easiest difficulties the AI puts up a good fight. Lots of depth to the game despite how easy it is to pick up.

It's really easy to get into, but mastering it is a whole different story.
I'd suggest playing the Restoration of Erathia chapter, starting with the Queen campaign and then followed by the rest in whatever order you like.
Those will get you familiar with all of the towns. Also make sure you save after every mission in a separate slot because the game does not keep track of your progress and make sure to pick a new campaign when you get the check mark for the one you just finished.
And get the HD mod.

an important thing about this: do NOT get heroes HD, released on steam by ubisoft. it's utter dogshit. they improved nothing and fucked with the sprites in order to try and re-sell a popular old game for a few extra shekels.
there's a HD mod for heroes 3 complete version, which has all the expansions and is available on GOG (which means it is easily pirated)

The only strategy game that has come close to matching HoMM3's greatness is Sengoku Rance. Outside of that, I haven't found a single game that had close to HoMM3 in terms of strategy, tactics, town management, unit variety, combat and replayability. There's always two or three elements that end up falling short and bring the whole game down. Maybe the failed elements make the game tedious/grindy, maybe it makes it too simple or easy, but whatever the case is, nothing except Sengoku Rance scratches the itch.

I was reluctant to play at first because of "lol porn game", but once you look past the anime titties and pixelated crotches, it's one of the best games out there. When compared the HoMM3, the only downside would be that it has somewhat less replayability. Everything else is about as good or better.

I disagree, enemies and allies present a wide variety of elemental resistances and weaknesses, not to mention defense and magic resistance actually play a role. Additionally, there's several variety in type of attacks, including different ranges and areas of damage (which also leads to having to manage friendly fire), buff skills and coordinated attacks that require two specific characters to stand together.
>story is below average
I'd say that depends on which route you choose.

How do you play it? I allways play it on the imbossible difficulty and it's not that hard, the start can be a bit tedious though as you have to go back and forth between islands to pick the weakest stacks&easiest quests and perhaps some treasures&maps that are guarded by baiting the hard stacks out of the way then picking them up but once you get the ball rolling it becomes easy and a tad tedious since it's still a pretty fucking long game.

There's no opportunity cost to changing out the different elemental weapons around. Elemental resists and weaknesses for enemies never matter. Elemental resists and weaknesses for your characters don't 99% of the time, and the 1% of the time where they do matter is either in NG+ or on elemental type maps. Golly gee, I guess I shouldn't bring the fire weak unit to the volcano maps! You can bring along more consumables than you'll ever need, so as long as your characters survive the enemy combat rounds, you'll do just fine. Also, you can just grind all of your problems away since there's nothing to prevent or punish you for doing so (outside of a few side quests). I don't consider the kiddie pool to be deep. It's fun to splash around in, but I can't exactly swim in it.
And the story is only there to introduce more areas and more girls to dick. The story isn't immersive, it doesn't evoke emotions, it doesn't give you a sense of awe and wonder, it doesn't shock you, and it doesn't make you think or stay with you after you close the game. It's also not boring, cringe worthy, filled with plot holes or deus ex machina bullshit, inconsistent, or insulting to the reader's intelligence. Not great, not horrible.
I 100%'d the game twice. The game is fun, just not great. Elf tits best girl, worst route.

An alchemy game like this should be about preparation and bringing the right kind of gear along, so rewarding grind is good in principle, but golly gee that idea falls apart if you can bring along an infinite amount of buyable infinite-supply healing items and can use an infinite amount of them every turn.

It worked very nicely at the beginning, but as I moved on, half my army or more would get wiped out during the more difficult fights and I'd have trouble finding good high tier creatures to use.
For the record, I didn't get very far, only up to the island where Daimon is and got regularly wrecked by the wandering stacks.
It's not that I can't beat any of them, it's that I don't know where to get decent replacements for all of my good lads.

Paladin's certainly not the easiest class to play, your offensive skills are pretty mediocre and rely heavily on decent troops and order buffs though once you get Resurrection spell from somewhere and got some points in the skill to boost it you'l end up being quite durable but yeah…
Try again with a warrior or a mage, mage is probably the easiest class especially once you can cast several spells in the same turn and can just nuke half the enemies by yourself before letting your troops deal with them and warrior makes sure you can use your pet dragon almost every turn+attack boost for your troops and i think they also had the highest leadership so expect a huge army eventually.

I beated the game long time ago. If memory serves well, then those robot-spider things are the best units. If you use them well you literally cant lose units and their are pretty strong against everything.
One of the best thing abot KB is that you really need to use your head, because sooner or alter the monsters will chipping away your army. Summoning is actually a very vital thing, you need to carefully plan to use it and decide when its needed.
