Back when the medium was relatively new, YTPMVs mostly used either background songs made specifically for the YTPMV, or used the sound effects from the clips used to "make" a song. YTPMVs with premade BGMs were relatively few and far between, and were generally shit in quality.
Sometime around 2008, the "THIS VIDEO CONTAINS X" fad effectively shifted YTPMVs from the "old" style to the BGM-dependent style that's only really distinguishable from otoMADs by the sources used. This is why Big Beat Mario is so prominent, it's an old-style YTPMV that was released in the new style era. That, and it's damn good.
Since then, it's been a steady evolution of technical prowess. What was considered great in '08 is considered okay now.

This is a rough draft of what I have planned for the ending. I know the sentence mixing isn't amazing but it's about as good as you can get with the length of the original (I decided to not use any sources outside of the plane scene, including the post credits sequence).
My plan is to add visuals over everything starting with "he didn't" or "flyyyyy", I want to get a silhouette of the Wreckage Brother suspended by cables slowly turning over a sunset. Well, this is what I have so far for the ending. I don't recall ever touching blender before yesterday so that was a fun experience, especially since the model of the plane (I looked up what the Wreckage Brother was) needed converting, a friend helped with that issue. The model is ready for animating, so all I have to do is figure that shit out and export it. Then I need to add in some "cables" in vegas to hold the plane and have the plane drop at the right time, leaving the tiny silhouette of Bane and Dr. Pavel hanging. After that it's just a few touch ups (like the Gaston cropping) and maybe adding a mask to the moon and Gaston if I'm feeling motivated enough after everything else.

The stuff that went on behind the scenes before SFM was interesting, generally in gmod. Some people used stop-motion, others waved some ragdolls around, freezing some parts of the body to just move an arm around while the rest of the body kind of twitched along as it wasn't always frozen in the completely adjacent spots. A few built elaborate invisible contraptions just to move multiple limbs or actors in a specific way.
SFM gave an easy way to smooth out all the jagged edges of those previous more limited techniques, but without decent animation skills, that kind of polish and smoothness really brings out all the flaws that were previously hidden by the grit, and not in a good way.
Like trying to animate exclusively by tweening. It's just not appealing unless handled with care. Sort of like animating without putting enough effort into the keyframes.
