Yeah playing as the Vietcong would work much better for this type of game and would make it stand out. For a Nam game I'd make it a squad based tactical shooter where you the player designs everyone of your brothers-in-arms and you could choose between 60 personalities (including classic tropes and archetypes from action movies) for them, with minor voice-acting. The game would be permadeath so if one of your brothers dies - he's dead for the rest of the game and can't be replaced, then maybe the characters and player could actually feel loss instead of being told to.
