Are you too much of a hipster for modern MMOs, but still need to fuel your MMO addiction? Multi User Dungeons (MUDs) are the ancestors of MMORPGs, purely text based multiplayer games played through a variery of clients. We're currently playing InfernoMOO (MUD, Object Oriented), a post-apocalyptic RPG with a stat and skill based progression system drawing inspiration from the Alien movie series and various cyberpunk settings, a large open world, a focus on PvP, and a perk-style "mutation" system. There are no PvP safe zones, so there's always some tension that someone might come hunting you down to steal your shit or rape you.
There are a variety of mutations, some with minor effects, some with more major ones. From things like being able to digest almost anything or being able to heal from getting drunk, to becoming a cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller who fears the light and can call other chuds to help him fight, or becoming a hideously mutated freak of nature who bleeds acid, absolutely despises all the degenerate sexhaving weedsmoking normalfags, and thinks there's nothing more relaxing in the world than going on wild murdersprees while autisticly screeching at everything that moves.
If you want to play with us, download a MUD client, then join at inferno.optiquest.org on port 7777. For Windows, most of us use MUSHclient. For Linux or OSX, Mudlet is a good choice. Both are fairly easy to set up and use, have a lot of helpful features like scripting support and triggers to automatically send specific commands in response to specific situations. MUDs and MOOs are text based so they're very toaster friendly.

I've been playing SWmud of late. I used to play only SWR and Godwars muds back in the 90s and 2000s, but I've since been trying new things. I've also been in my spare time trying to recreate the Lurking Fear III codebase in Python. I had to use the wayback machine to get the source code, and then I reposted it on the MUD repository.
If I ever finish the project, I will consider it to be worthwhile.

Don't attack people who have a newbie tag (account less than 5 days old or at extremely low XP), don't steal shit from people in your corp. If you attack or steal from someone, expect them and their corp to retaliate. That's basically it. I'll put caps of Inferno's rules here. The admins are kind of lax too. When we played about a year ago, we found an exploit that gave a tonne of money very easily. Once the admins found out, they turned themselves into IRS agents, sent us a message telling us we were being audited, then IRS agents came to our HQ and took all the money we got through the exploit. They could have just taken the money, and could have banned us, but instead they tried to make it fun and we got off easy.

They replaced the orphanage with a meat factory full of defective clones, and increased the minimum player character age to 18 instead of 13. The secret quest involving the furnace is still in, but it's changed to feature the NPC who replaces Agnes, and feels kind of out of place now. I dislike the meat factory because the orphanage set a much darker tone to start the game off, and because the secret quest loses almost all of its impact with the different circumstances. It's the only censorship I'm aware of.

Here's a download for all the currently-leaked HellMOO source code. Here we have the original 2010 GilMOO leak, the 2015 Inferno leak, and the "HeavenMOO" code which is basically 2015 InfernoMOO but with a shitload of bugs fixed (HeavenMOO was a different HellMOO fork being made by some other guys but it didn't pan out). So if you ever want to run your own HellMOO server, the HeavenMOO code is probably your best bet for now

A lot of fags can't actually separate themselves from their characters in the sense that they can't "make up" a character that thinks and acts in a different way that they do at all and thus whatever character they play as ends up acting as an extension of themselves.
They will talk, act and think just like they do IRL. I don't mean they're the kind of people that will shoot up animals to skin them afterwards and make a jacket with their leather, but rather that if they tend to tell a lot of jokes or disregard other people most of the time, they likely act the same way IRL.
It's the same people that go "why would I play anything other than a human male when I'm a dude IRL?" and ironically, Bethesda makes games specifically for this type of people.
That's half the problem and the fault of the players, but then there's the other half that's the fault of admins, where the definition of "proper roleplay" is a lot subjective.
You might not get insta-ban the second you log in with a character the mods disagree with, but the leeway you get in-game will vary according to how much they "agree" with your character. Trying to roleplay someone that has an excuse to be a violent freak will see you banned at the first offense you commit, for instance.
It's not set in stone that "forced roleplay" always leads to this, but it's easy to set a precedent and the option is always there, on the whims of someone else. And since a lot of people have issues with having to compromise what they do online to fit into a group instead of just doing whatever the fuck they want (regardless of how terrible that is for group cohesion), you'll always end up in shitty situations where everyone's at fault but nobody will accept responsability.
This is why "High RP" games only live with small niche communities that think alike or know each other or with somewhat mature individuals that do know how to compromise and still have fun. Don't expect much from lonely neets, they can't even roleplay IRL.

Well, I think that anyone can actually come up with a somewhat interesting background for a character if they try for a while, it's not really that hard.
The hard part is staying in character all the time, especially when what your character should normally do goes against what the game expects you to do.
For instance, let's say that you're playing a submissive healslut. It's all fun and games and headpats until you need to defend yourself or ask for something, at which point a lot of people will break character and become murder freaks.
Or the reverse. Suppose you're roleplaying a luchador. In some situations, there's really no chance you'd win a fight but as a luchador you'd always be up for the chalenge anyway and still try it.
Committing to a character is already hard and it's even harder when everyone around you talks in an incredibly meta way about the game as well.

Her "graph" shows a linear position but that'd be assuming you can only go 2 directions in a room. In an intersection, 2 people could be at the same X distance, the middle, but still quite far if one was to west and the other to east.
Best way to do this would be something akin to BYOND games where rooms are composed of smaller tiles and every mob\object occupies a position there, but this would mean extra tiles to compute and harder pathfinding for mobs as well.

This is neither bad or good. It's an idea to promote certain things depending on what you do with it. Having no currency earned if you die for instance gives impact to death and makes people try to avoid it instead of throwing themselves to danger because why not?
But it's hard to pull off if nothing else helps with this.

There are several other ways to avoid that, like killing yourself, getting a mutation that lets you regrow a dick, and I think there's surgery that can give you a dick back.
