Every game console since the 7th generation bar the Wii use a GPU with a fully programmable shader model as far as I can tell. So unfortunately shader caches are here to stay if we want to emulate newer consoles. The alternative is to re-implement the entire GPU in GLSL which so far only Dolphin devs have done with Ubershaders (since the Wii/GCN GPU uses partially programmable shaders, the shaders have to compile on those too but they're much smaller so you don't really feel much difference)

Also, for those using rpcs3: Shader caches are supposed to be globally unique in their generation, which means if the full path changes for your emulator or game data, the cache won't be used, and an additional cache folder will be generated. Each game from P3 onward is set in the same continuity. However each game in the series is more or less a self contained story with a new cast of characters.
It's recommended to start with P3 as it introduced all of the elements that were later refined in P4/P5.

You can't play Replicant, it was never translated. The patch that supposedly translates it, is just a port of the Gestalt translation with brother and father swapped around - but there was far more to the script than this.
Don't feel sorry though. The timeskip in Nier was absolutely made with Repicant in mind (think 9S losing control), but having an old main character in a jrpg contributes greatly to the uniqueness and off feeling of the game.
