Official overview:
Maxi’s father had worked in the Ryukyu Kingdom as a merchant. Though fortunate enough to experience different cultures from his trade, he felt tied down by his job. On his deathbed, he told Maxi to go out and see the world. Deciding to live by these words, Maxi set out to seek total freedom. He found this out at sea where he became a pirate to see the world his father couldn’t.
Maxi’s weapon is a nunchaku which is extremely difficult to wield. It will give a rain of pain to the opponent but only if you know how to handle it!
No mention of the high seas gay community but there's no mention of Astaroth either and that is worrying me. These assholes are confirming everyone except my goddamned main. Heck! Neither my secondaries (Voldo and Cervantes) have been confirmed.

I'd say Mitsurugi and Nightmare are the most iconic but Voldo is certainly one of the most memorable characters to those who've happened to glance the series at some point.
As for SE street cred, Li Long's been a goner for ages outside a crappy appearance in SC3.

Why? Him and Voldo are the only characters from the base 10 from the original game that remain to be confirmed. Given that this is a remake, they're pretty much guaranteed. They've also been in every game, so that gives you even less reason to worry. I'd also say Cervantes and Lizardman are locks, for that same reason. Voldo was also leaked by the same guy who predicted the game's reveal and Groh.
I think the more interesting question is who else will make it in who wasn't in SC1. Since we're at 13 confirmed characters and three more obvious ones (Astaroth, Cervantes, and Lizardman), that leaves four empty slots out of 20 from the early character select screen. Talim and Tira are the obvious waifu choices and both place consistently high in popularity polls, plus they are the only remaining characters from the original leak. So who will take the remaining two spots? Raphael and Cassandra? Rock and Li Long? The Koreans? Newcomers? Or perhaps slots for random and customs? This is all assuming the game will only have 20 characters on release, but there's tons of empty space on that select screen and it could just mean that there are numerous characters to be unlocked via single player.

Yes, it's the character select screen from the latest press demo. A bunch of people have been concerned about the size of the roster since there's only 20 slots, but the producer explicitly said not to worry about that when asked by Kayane, so the current theory is that more slots appear as you unlock characters.
I think it would look better with the amazing 2D artwork like in SCV (my concept in pic related), but they're obviously going for that SC2 aesthetic so I can't blame them.

Cervantes and Lizardman have been in every single game in one form or another, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Cervantes in particular is important to the plot of the early games, so he's basically guaranteed.
I think Lizardman is the more interesting question. I'd say he's iconic and fills a very distinct niche in the roster, and his overhaul in SCV gave him some much needed uniqueness. He did poorly in that cancerous Facebook poll, but that was raided and botted to hell and back by waifufags so it certainly doesn't reflect the general feelings of the community (also, >Facebook).

Maxi had a loose approach to combo strings and chains but remain to hold that double edged effect as most noobs that use Maxi don't control themselves with the attack strings as a majority leaves him open to a counter or parry.
