While on the topic, why does /v/ hate Hearts of Iron IV and constantly shill for Darkest Hour?

<Darkest Hour:

>choose between keeping the default notification spam on or missing vital information because the gamelog is too tiny and a wall of text

>takes a year to make one standard division of infantry

>have to manually separate armies into individual divisions when trying to perform naval or paratrooper invasion

>Soviet Union OP

>Have to edit the config just to get spacebar to pause

<Meanwhile in Hearts of Iron IV:

>Superior UI

>Division Production has more options and isn't too fast or to slow to produce divisions

>naval invasion and paradrops no longer a chore

>better graphics

>thriving modding community

The only upper-hand DH has is slightly """better""" AI (even though there are plenty of mods for HOI IV that fix theirs), more detailed provinces, and the research team juggling which was pretty fun

HoI4 is a meme game. "Haha lets recreate the HRE in 1940 xD"

>notification spam

Tbh I just click through and ignore all the notifications. The important ones are all outlined in red anyway. The rest I identify based on sound. So if I here a bunch of "unit produced" sounds, I know it's time to deploy new units. If I hear a bunch of "unit upgraded" sounds I know it's time to check my prioritized units to see if they still need to be prioritized. If I hear a "technology researched" sound I know it's time to pick a new tech etc.

>takes a year to produce infantry

That's a major problem I have. I can never produce as many units as America/Germany/Britain actually had by 1941 for Germany and 1945 for America. America made a hundred aircraft carriers during WW2, but I can barely squeeze in a dozen at best while also racing to produce an entire air force, other naval units, reactors so I can start producing

GLORIOUS NUCLEAR BOMBS

and two army groups before the Soviets steamroll Germany and Britain invades Yugoslavia or something weird like that and ends the war by 1943.

>manually separate armies

It's a bit of a chore, but it's nice to be able to min-max things by putting together combined arms corps with good commanders and the right amount of brigades so I can win in the most efficient manner possible.

>Soviet Union OP

They should be powerful to be honest. They were in real life. They do get a lot of events that spam units at them for free, but I see that as mostly making up for the fact that the AI will always be inferior to a human player and that there are gamey ways to inflict more casualties on the AI that the AI itself won't use.

>spacebar to pause

That's another thing I don't like, but it's a minor inconvenience for me.

>HoI IV

I played it for an hour then gave up. The tech tree is simplified to absolute retard levels, and combat seems far too easy. The decision system is superior to HoI2's, but then again so is Darkest Hour's.

HoI3 is my favorite Hearts of Iron overall. I just don't play it because I'm not aware of any NWO2 style mods that provide a detailed Cold War game.

Stop being a retard once in your life. hoi4 has many flaws, but picking out the completely optional alternate history options that can only happen if the player is actively working towards it is the most retarded reddit way to criticize the game.

Don't bother with the base game, just get Darkest Hour. I'd recommend the New World Order 2 mod, which lets you play from 1933-infinity (well, 9998 to be exact). It adds a bunch of Cold War events (partition of Europe, Korea, Vietnam, space race, Chinese civil war, etc) so you can play capitalists vs commies like I'm doing now. You could also use the Grand Campaign mod, which lets you play from 1914-infinity so you can do WW1 and the interwar years, but I've found that to be a bit buggy (France always declares war on Germany ~1930, crushes them, and forms Uber Frankreich; the U.K. goes to war with some minor South American countries after WW1 ends and uses the wartime IC modifier to build 500 divisions of infantry over the next twenty years so WW2 starts and ends in September 1939, the Soviet Union declares war on China in the 1930s and is so busy killing chinks that they have no soldiers on the Western front, so they get steamrolled by Germany, etc).

I'm making a mod for hearts of iron 3 that will make it the best game of the series. I'm taking the base game and adding the good things from black ice rather than removing the bad things from black ice since there are more bad things in that mod than good.

Some things I'd like to point out though that people have never noticed from playing black ice: heavy ic is never worth it, and military colleges don't work

Late to the party but I'll bite: The issue is that HOI4 is the ultimate culmination of the BELIEVABLE meme, and honestly I'd forgive it if it just stopped at it being an ebin meem game, but it's not just that (though I'll concede that the production line system is certainly a step forwards)

>AI is fucking dumb, doesn't defend properly and higher difficulties are just debuffs on you instead of higher strategic skill demand which is why you see so many people rush paratroopers for easy wins

>Allied AI is even worse, it refuses to comprehend supply limits and fucks your organisation every time you enter any war

>On that note, organisation and division manpower are basically "battle mana" and "manpower mana"

>Organisation is even dumber: oh, your extremely powerful division has slightly less green mana than your opponent's dumbass light infantry division? sorry, you get fucking stomped

>Nearly incomprehensible naval battles, it's almost as if you're flipping a coin to see who sunk who

>No political gameplay of any kind, just pick a different ideology without any particular repercussion or influence countries in the same way (though random civil wars all over the place is pretty funny)

>Still poorly optimized at late game, enjoy your powerpoint presentation when the war reaches the whole world

Those are just from the top of my head. I know that some of these issues were addressed with waking the tiger and the modding community certainly do wonders with the game, but that's just more proof that the base game isn't good, and people here have plenty of reasons to shit on it.

>>14842542

>>choose between keeping the default notification spam on or missing vital information because the gamelog is too tiny and a wall of text

What vital information? I've never had this problem. All the most important information is presented to you. The only one's I turn off are the ones for when units arrive, except naval units, and most of the one's related to air combat since they'll usually be spammed when your aircraft repeatedly encounter enemy aircraft. Mostly I just look at the one's for when units are built, when units are attacked, and when battles are over.

>>takes a year to make one standard division of infantry

3/4 of a year at the beginning of the game. Later technology lets you build divisions faster than this and drops infantry to about 1/2 a year. And the Soviet doctrines drop that to about 90 days.

>>have to manually separate armies into individual divisions when trying to perform naval or paratrooper invasion

Organizing your armies is a core part of the game why is this a complaint? Are you saying you can only load them one at a time because that's completely wrong. You're limited by transport size. It's easy to keep paratroopers separate from the rest of your divisions and you can easily organize your TPs to suit your division organization.

>>Soviet Union OP

Kessel.

>>Have to edit the config just to get spacebar to pause

Fair enough.

The advantage of DH is a very clean UI, good balance of macro and micro detail (e.g. tech teams instead of 3's abstract research system), very nice looking map in fact it's probably the best looking map in any grand strategy game because it conveys precisely the information you need without any unnecessary flair (mostly thinking here of the messy terrain maps in EU or Victoria). The only good thing about HoI4 is the ability to customize divisions in a new way which doesn't even matter because the game is still terribly broken. The AI is shit, Paradox continues to think retarded alt-history belongs in the main game, and they put less effort into what they call a finished game than a few modders did for their standalone version of HoI2. DH has pictures for just about every political leader and general from the period that they could find. HoI4 repeats that same fucking guy for half the portraits. That should show you the amount of effort they put.

Dumbing down naval invasions and paradrops is just one example of how this game was made for the casual audience. You can't even manage a few TPs or transport planes? Then you shouldn't be playing these games.

The graphics are an obstruction to actually understanding what you're looking at at a glance, the most important factor in a grand strategy game. Why are there no NATO counters?

As for the thriving modding community, DH still has an active modding community despite it's age. That the Kaiserreich devs have "moved on" is a blessing in disguise based on what they're doing on the HoI4 branch.

Now go play Civ you fucking casual.

You forgot to mention that:

>The AI can't understand how to perform naval invasions, so you'll just see them teleporting behind you with like one division and getting crushed at every opportunity

>The AI will never defend their mainland if they're at war somewhere else, they just rush every division out of their continent if need be

>The AI can't stop sending waves of themselves into your fortifications, killing themselves by the millions

>The AI chooses random spots to drop nukes instead of covering a retreat or forcing a peace deal

>Without Player-Led Conferences mods, the AI will go full BELIEVABLE worlds and eschew areas that produce more resources just to expand their borders arbitrarily, or in the case of democracies sometimes forming puppets that they can't possibly defend

>Resources are a complete mess, America and some Oceanic regions have so fucking many of them just to make the late game challenging for a non-democratic player and to help them overcome the AI's stupidity for a democratic one

>Influencing other countries' political parties is way too fucking easy, you can form a fascist Russia if you're quick enough

>Playing on anything but Europe, Asia or the Middle East is impossibly boring because of the terrain debuffs and the very scattered victory points

>All the important and historic decisions don't happen because or in spite of your efforts, but just by clicking on a goddamn focus tree's leaf

>Somehow Paracucks missed the memo that the Kaiser favored the NSDAP because they were one of the few parties that didn't want their head on a stick

>>14846290

Which reminds me, some areas of the map are completely undefendable, like Italy, the Midwest and South East Asia, for no other reason that the AI can't into tactical warfare.

But then again, the game is just built for memes and mods.
