It's probably a matter of willingness on some of their smaller studios' part. Kid Icarus would still be dead if not for Sakurai, and I think DKCR only exists because one of Nintendo's higher ups remembered a random comment from Retro about how they'd love to make a DKC game years after they made that comment.

They probably partly believe that they don't need it since they have a very successful racing series in Mario Kart, and their smaller studios are better spent developing Zelda spinoffs. I think the failure of GX probably makes them unwilling to try again.
