I expect popular pop song to play when the official trailer hits. I thought they would learn their lesson with The Lorax but they seem to be continuing to bastardize their source material with The Grinch. Nintendo obviously would pick the safe studio in terms of animation profitability, instead of if they can make a good movie. If they did, they would have gone to the studio behind Coraline or Kubo and the Two Strings. The key is subtlety and nuance. If the joke is the meme you fucked up. Borderlands 2 is infamously bad about this. They took a semiserious setting and packed it to the fucking gills with memes and references that aren't the slightest bit clever. An example of a toasty meme in a game is Jill's Sandwjches as a store in the mall of the original Dead Rising. It was a clever reference to a bit of shit voice acting in a game that would go over the newer fan's heads and give the established fan a sensible chuckle. This is a reason the MCU films have remained consistently popular. They can reference themselves and reward people who pay attention to the characters and setting. Even when they get it wrong they make it right by poking fun at the inconsistency later in the timeline.
The joke should never be the meme.

You know. At one point, I thought that pic related would never go away. It was one of the most megapopular memes that ever existed, and I honestly thought it was gonna stay with us forever as a permanent online staple. But despite its enduring longass lifespan, it DID go away eventually. And now it's just another tired, outdated meme at this point. One that "only oldfags" even use anymore. Cameos or shoutouts to a dev/publisher's other games or series are something I consider alright, and in the case of celebratory anniversary titles, I expect there to be some of that. Memes though are a different matter. Keep existing real world ones out as those break immersion and may prematurely date a game, don't go out of one's way to force a meme, and if the playerbase decides something about the game's content is memeworthy, let it happen organically. Xenoblade was a good example of the organic sort, wherein the combat quips were deemed entertaining enough on their own to get spammed around for years.
