Warm up the iron, lads.

I'm looking for an inexpensive iron for use in some surface mount IC work, suggestions?
6462aa No.14808565
Get a hot air rework station for surface mount work, especially for removal of small components. I have a Hakko FX888D for work at home and a Sealody SSA51 for my job, it's a cheap and decent iron.
Currently I'm fixing up a model 1 Genesis (with the serial port, earliest model) which appears to have some issues with its sync pulses, so I'm going to be getting into that soon. Not a console but I'm also working on fixing up my Ikegami HTM-2050RA1 which just had a vertical foldover last night. Shouldn't be a pain to fix, just a sudden upset that I've contacted Ikegami about and have some service information already.
Other than that I'm flashing a PS1 Gameshark with UniROM soon, just gotta dig my PS1 out and get my RGB cable made.

I'm going to need some more info, that thing looks really cheap, though $60 from china, I don't know what to believe now. I've never really done fine soldering, planning on picking up some mid 00's junk electronics at goodwill or something for practice before I try to do a SNES SPDIF mod. SHVC modules are pretty inexpensive, too, so I can afford to make a few mistakes.

Heats up in seconds, and is actually easy to set the temperature, unlike Hakko's 888d, just because it has two buttons. I don't want to be a complete shill for it, but of all the irons I've used, the random Chinese one is probably my favorite.
However, I'm not working on any mods right now. Any relatively simple ones I can get started on? Most of my soldering has been those cheap Chinese kits from ebay, and an old 9-5V power supply I built my freshman year.

They have a few resistors, capacitors, transistors, and LEDs, about ten parts in total. If you fuck one up, try and fix it, or trash it because it was so cheap. There's also other random kits for a slightly more, but they're all fun to screw around with. Just search for "solder practice kit," "solder practice kit suite," or something similar, just mind the Engrish. Recently modded a slim PS3, nice to have one again after my launch model one died. I was too retarded and never backed up the HDD (or dumped the key) so I'm in the slow process of downloading everything I had in that 1TB HDD… I'm thinking that after that is done I should get a slim 360 and mod that one too, use it as a media center and for multiplats since the PS3 multiplats are generally worse. How reliable are the slim 360's? I don't want any RRODs. Also, I might as well get a fat PS2 and mod it since PS2 emulation is shit on slims and getting another launch model will only mean it will die eventually.

The collectorfag threads on /v/ aren't, or weren't i guess now that they're banned, that much different from this, you didn't really see much circlejerking over "shitty trash for children", mostly just people talking about systems they found/are trying to fix up. it's just a few plates held onto a frame with screws. It's doable but honestly kinda stupid and would be a gigantic project. Those monitors are incredibly rare and are only getting more uncommon and modifying one or exposing it to any knid of interference or taking it off spec could severely damage it. Not to mention if you're going to emucucking there's the issue of dealing with 480i output unless you get an even more expensive 480p one, having to go outside the case anyway for inputs due to decoding of video signals being handled separately from the monitors electronics.

CRTs are analog, old consoles only output analog signals. When an old console sends its analog signal to an analog receiver, that signal doesn't need any extra time to be processed, and because it is analog it can communicate with the display in specific ways that digital ones aren't built for. Neat tricks and "hacks" with the technology is how the games got their look.
LCD is digital, so when you send it an analog signal it has to process that analog signal into something it can use, which takes time, creating longer response time. It must reinterpret the signal, decide how to process it, upscale it to fit the display (usually going from 240p to 1080p), and then finally light up the appropriate pixels. The result is a vaseline smeared mess which can make playing games which require a fast reaction time very difficult. CRTs generally look a lot better, even low end ones, than the most expensive LCD panels for handling SD signals. When you start getting into the professional side of things the results are like an entirely unique technology that look a world apart from consumer CRT and LCD panels.

I dont think it's doable, CRTs like sony's PVM are cramp inside. maybe you can fit a mini-itx board inside with a tiny heatsink but the video card might not fit. and CRTs generate lots of heat which will affect your performance. just build a mini-itx cube next to it.
