Will there ever be a sci-fi 4x that can match or even surpass alpha centauri? Also, alpha centauri thread

a3ea4d No.14798652

>>14798498

Nah.

I had briefly hoped Pandora would be it, but it was missing that special something.

Beyond Earth (expansion mandatory!) tried but failed too.

It´s not bad, just a dumbed down prettied up whore version of the original.

Fun in it´s own right, for a while.

94ab6f No.14798685

The things which make SMAC memorable have little to do with the game itself but with the setting and the flavor text. Civ 2 is arguably better than SMAC mechanics-wise and I don't think the mechanics introduced by SMAC add much e.g. the design workshop, which is often pointless on top of having a rather clunky interface. So there are already better games out there. But Brian Reynolds really did a fucking amazing job at crafting and selecting the flavor elements. Civ 4 took the idea of associating quotes with each tech, too, but most of them fall flat compared with the SMAC quotes.

94ab6f No.14799030

>>14798727

Shit with no redeeming qualities? Because, frankly, I don't care about the setting either. It could've been any other else, just as with the factions. But the whole way it was put together betrays some skill on the part of the creators, which is the case as with anything else in life. If you don't know how to different between stuff and structure you might as well be blind.

Which is to say that if you preference is entirely and precisely due to the setting, there's nothing to discuss. Thank you for speaking your mind on the topic, however.

This was such an epic game. I thought about making a something like it in Unity with more strategy, more realism, more depth, more hard sci-fi, more stuck up philosophical/metaphysical ramblings. Unfortunately, I still suck at programming.

If the game throws an error you can almost always keep playing. There's a specific bad error that pops up very early sometimes but you most likely passed it if you played a few hours.

Sometimes the game does slow down but that's because it's simulating NPR combat.

d694f8 No.14802216

Alpha Centauri was a mess. The whole thing dies in a horrible fire of micromanagement hell as it has the popcorn base problem of some other civ games combined with the ability to build on water. You either get an early victory, play casually, or quit out of frustration at turns that take an hour.

The only civ that really worked mechanically as long as you avoid the exploits was civ 1. They've just kept adding more ever since when what the game needs is less. It's like dorf fort now where games die from either excess micro or excess CPU.

SMAC truly is a masterpiece. It did so many things amazingly well. The unit workshop and terraforming Planet system, both of which gave you enormous freedom and so many options. And the atmosphere. I haven't played a game with better worldbuilding in all these years. It's really sad that nothing has been done with the franchise in 20 years.

Picked this up a couple years ago. Loved everything about the setting, the characters, the story, even the quotes were great considering that they were all basically pseudo intellectual dribble made up for non existent technology.

But I could never get into the gameplay. It ultimately suffers from the same problem every civ game has which is that the only way to get good at it is to exploit the AI. Each game either has you out on top from the beginning and completely unbeatable, or miles behind the leader. The optimal strategy is to spam supply crawlers, which feels like cheating since the AI doesn't use them. And if you want to get around the bad AI by playing multiplayer, the game slows down to a day long slog since humans players are nowhere near as fast as the computer.

087538 No.14806252

>>14803604

I think that's because the game is almost 20 years old. I agree that the biggest disadvantage to the game is the gameplay, but it's fun to roleplay with at least.

This. Only problem is that late game the game turns into a nightmare to manage everything. Turns drag on when the real fun comes from combat, research, expansion, not micromanaging 30 fleets across the map.

In the first few civ games, yes. Cities work the center tile for free, after all. Morgan in particular can't grow past size 4 before inventing habitation domes anyway, so he might as well spam cities instead of going for big ones.

a25ec7 No.14818041

It's better to double the spacing until you unlock satellites (only plant every other city) since you need more minerals from 2 boreholes to get infrastructure up, but yes.
