When someone releases a FOSS SDK that people can use across multiple headsets to make games that pajeet churns out. Followed by those FOSS SDK devs making a game themselves that is quality and then copied ad infinitum. Problem is no one is writing that SDK for developers because you would be torn to peices if you released it under your real name by all these giga kikes who want (((royality fees))). Combine that with low quality poos in the loos being the majority of software devs and you get shit hardware and software.

The problem is everyone is trying to build their own walled garden where you're forced to play.

Mixed Reality only works on windows 10, and not even all versions of windows 10, meaning it is incompatible with something like 80% of desktops.

The Vive pro is overpriced, doesn't work with 7 for god knows what reason and is trying to get you to subscribe to their Viveport bullshit.

Don't even need to talk about Oculus, everyone knows what bullshit happened there.

Someone just needs to produce a headset with drivers that work on all current versions of windows and Mac OSX and doesn't come with some sort of bundled store or subscription bullshit. Of course, that is about as likely as linux gaining noticeable market share.

In all honesty, how large of a factor is this in VR stuff? I run a pretty standard 1920x1080 with hardware that usually only runs modern games on low graphics. Does 1080x1200 per eye look that bad to be a major factor, or is it the difference between getting 60fps vs. 120fps? I won't deny that I was interested in VR (primarily for flight sims), but couldn't be convinced to shell out the better part of a grand for one.

Do you have a headset? The "screen door effect" is pretty noticeable on anything under, like, 2/4k. Just get a 1080p screen and push your face close enough to it so that the borders of the screen are just outside your peripheral vision, and then cut it in half.

The controllers/methods of interacting with the visuals really is the crux of the issue here.

You simply can't plop a person INTO a 3D environment and have them waggle two sticks with buttons on in the air and have it seem anything close to fun or satisfying, and to top it off every company that is trying to fix the issues is going about it retardedly by putting condoms in gloves that inflate to simulate touching things when it would be far easier use TENS electro stimulation to make your muscles feel like they are working against forces in a more accurate way along with measuring what your muscles are actually doing at any given point.

VR absolutely requires your body literally being the controller for it to work, and with TENS you can feel like you are moving while you are sitting still, micro movements can quickly become sprinting across the playing field and at the end of the day you just spent 4 hours playing a game that was giving you physical therapy, and if you are a real masochist you can dial up the charge to the point that it's painful and you would easily start building muscle while doing fuckall.

0192b0 No.14786786

VR can be really cool but it's plagued by a number of problems. Developer cowardice and stupidity, capitulating to weak stomached whiners, being concerned more with being a VR showcase than being an actual game, cables getting in the way of movement, bad character movement solutions, a stupid amount of different hardware possibilities: controllers and idiotic headset/software lock-in, etc. I tried Serious Sam VR and the awful 'jumping' movement ruined the entire game. The difference between VR using just head rotation and VR with location tracking and motion controllers is pretty significant. If you've tried the former but not the latter you really haven't experienced what VR has to offer. But the fact is VR is severely lacking in openness and innovation.

But nobody learned that maybe that piece of shitty idea is actually uncomfortable and will be jewed for huge price as a hardware piece. Not to mention requiring specifically made games for them.

You will never get more comfortable setup for video games than a gamepad and a tv. VR is for pretending to be immersed because of 3d effect of doubled monitor on your eyes while doing nothing immersible mentally or intellectually.

Even reading a fucking book is more immersive than virtual reality.

Jumping is a result of fundamental VR control problem.

First your line of sight and point of view tied to head movements. This is good, this is immersions, this is VR. But you can't stand or sit at one place forever, and how do you fucking move your body? Any external control disconnected from your head instantly ruins immersion and assaults your vestibular apparatus. Just moment ago your vision was perfectly tied to the vestibular apparatus in the full 6 DOF, this is immersion and now invisible hands drags your you out from your immersion and drags your around offending your senses. Teleports are hack around this problem.

If your walk around room naturally with your legs problem is solved naturally but room is limited and you are not going anywhere literally and metaphorically speaking. Only types of the games that kinda work are "cockpit" games.

>Someone just needs to produce a headset with drivers that work on all current versions of windows and Mac OSX

Several issues here, first of all Apple has pretty much given up on PC gaming by still using OpenGL 4.1 which is 8 years old at this point. All of their in-house graphic development effort has been focused on their own hardware for tablets and phones.

Second there's the licensing of drivers for Windows that costs a fortune. There's a lot more to this as explained by Carmack in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHLpKzUxjGk but long story short focusing on their own version of Android actually makes sense. Microsoft had to pay them off to use their surplus xbone controllers(which at the time required W10) and keep their device W10 only at first but weren't able to get them onboard for their Mixed Reality app store.

Right now the clear winner by a mile in the VR platform wars is Sony with the PSVR(960×1080 per eye) which is hardly talked about here. Even if you don't have a PS4 it's worth considering since the headset alone costs $200 and works on all versions of Windows and OSX since it's just a simple display that uses HDMI.

Fun fact, VR sickness is due to your brain noticing the disconnect between your eyes and all of your other senses. The brain thinks you're hallucinating or being poisoned, and it trying to save you.

If you don't feel it, then your genetics, and perhaps even God himself, intended for you to die.

Okay so currently I can think of three games that might be worth playing. Hotdogs Horseshoes and Handgrenades, Gorn, and maybe Arizone Sunshine. I haven't played any of them since I don't own a headset but they all seem promising at least. There's also some neat programs like Tiltbrush and the VR Desktop (although apparently VR Desktop is not very stable in its current state). There are probably a few other titles worth playing that I forgot to mention, but right now it's really sparse and I couldn't justify paying more than 200 bucks for a headset. I'm sure that in a year or two things will improve, even if only slightly, but whether or not developers will be making actually good games remains to be seen.

>When will the autism and jewry die down, and the quality begin?

Not soon but eventually. The biggest problem is that although vr is about the same cost as a new console, most people don't have the computer to run it and it has all these added costs of additional hardware. This excludes a large portion of the market - the more frugal part of it - like myself that wants to buy it but doesn't want to spend that much and leaves only the top end of spenders. Price doesn't matter so much for them.

When cards improve to the point that high end ones now are average then, it'll open up into the larger market and you'll get all that healthy competition that drives prices down and quality up.

Can someone explain why VR needs games specifically for it?

I mean, the headsets are basically just monitors, they only let you look at things. I'd rather focus be put in to making general internet browsing or playing existing games with their normal controls more compatible than trying to make 'VR games'.

Most new games are pretty lack luster anyways, I'd rather have good ways to play other games. Vaguely remember like a VR arcade thing where you could add games to it and actually play on the machines, which is the kind of shit they should be going for. 2D games can't really translate so I'd be up for it being straight to my face or in arcade things like that. 3D games could use the space a lot better, but ultimately its just a new way to control the camera.

Also a VR internet browser would be the shit, get some sci fi feel to it. Have as many 'monitors' as you want with it.

Just go with a projector then. They have a higher res image. They help alleviate eyestrain imo. You can use them as a viable desktop monitor so all of your normal vidya will be supersized and much higher visual quality. The new epson lcd projectors are pretty darn good. They are comparable prices to vr headsets. The 2100 and 2150 have $50 replacement lamps so they make the best desktop monitors.

Also it doesn't take much financially or effort-wise to get your room and viewing experience comfy. Take a page from the nips. Walls painted a soft color. Soft curtains that give off that warm enveloping shoji glow. DIY a kotatsu/futon setup. Doesn't matter how good, no VR experience is going to be able to match up to the real thing.

I have a CV1 vive headset and its pretty good.

But people here have absolutely no clue what VR games are like, since there is no crossover information about VR games towards desktopfags.

Idiots still think VR is teleportation only shit, or that it would be best played with a console controller or KBM, instead of roomscale with motion control.

Games like Sairento VR that have full on wallrunning, sliding, backflips and quadruple-jumping.

And having a headset plus using traditional controls feels utterly awful, its just a fancy way of looking around ingame and loses its novelty within a day or two.

There are good VR games out, there is just few of them and desktop users don't know anything about it. There is no marketing for them since VR is too expensive for normalfags and /v/ can't discuss VR games, because only a handful people here have it. The other large part who does can't participate in those threads other than shitposting about VR.

Good VR games include: Vox Machinae, VTOL VR, Onward/PavlovVR, Robo Recall

Here's a question that's always been on my mind when it comes to gaming with a headset:

What would you say is a good FOV to play on? More than what you'd normally use on a desktop? Less? About the same?

You say using a headset and KBM is just a fancy way of looking around, but would it make for a decent alternative to a monitor for gaming?

>>14805198

>What would you say is a good FOV to play on?

Hard to tell what it is now, you only get screendoor effect for like 2 minutes with the headset, then you never notice it again until you're done.

I'd say 10% more fov and we'd be set.

>More than what you'd normally use on a desktop?

Yes, since monitors are usually further away, that means the fov can be smaller. Since headsets are directly on your head, the fov needs to be bigger.

>You say using a headset and KBM is just a fancy way of looking around, but would it make for a decent alternative to a monitor for gaming?

No, not at all. 96% of all desktop games do not support VR in any way, and without headtracking its utterly pointless.

When you do have headtracking like in Elite Dangerous, its neat for a few hours. But the novelty fades away really, really fast.

Then you'll choose to play Elite Dangerous on the desktop like usual rather than on your headset.

Good VR games will be their own market, similar to the difference between handheld and desktop games.
