This has been a problem that has been lowkey for the past decade, but with ActiBlizz's success with Overtrash, more gamedevs are doing this and it's becoming a problem. Limited time gamemodes: New gamemodes and missions added to games, but only for a limited amount of time.
>Overwatch
Lucioball, story missions, and more. Timelocked because the soyboys at Blizzard are braindead with making games, and also to push loot boxes.
>World of Tanks
Lunar Mode. Timelocked for no reason.
>Fortnite
Thanos Mode. Timelocked for no reason.
>Rainbow Six Siege
Outbreak. Taken away for no reason.
>Hitman 2016
A shitload of missions were limited time then gone forever. One of the reasons that game bombed was because they did that.
And many more cases. For Free to Plays no one really gives a shit, but the problem is this is happening in a lot of $60 games. Monster Hunter World is even doing this shit, so this shit practice is now infecting the nips. What boggles my mind even more are the fags on Reddit who defend the limited time gamemodes.
<"They need to be limited time! It makes them special!"
<"They would get boring if they were permanent!"
<"Matchmaking would become a mess if they were permanent!"
<"They're not required to do anything goyim! You'll buy the game and play it how they want you to!
Fuck this shit, and fuck any gamedev that even thinks of making new modes limited time.

Valve does it with Dota2, and with CSGO they add cool new maps every season and then remove from them game a few months later. All of this costs money to play, and you never get to play them for as long as you want.

>>14784471
It's shitty, but at least Valve let's people download the maps and let people play them in dedicated servers. Even the Co-Op Strike missions were made permanent. It's not perfect, but still better then ActiBlizzard taking them away so no one gets to play them.
508c68 No.14784485
I hadn't really thought about it, to be honest, but you're right, this sort of thing is happening more. The only "logical" reason I can think of for limited time modes is to keep engagement up through spikes of activity (quick, get in the game and see this new thing before it's GONE FOREVER), getting players who may have dropped the game back into it, and maybe hook them into being regulars again. And of course there's financial incentive to do so as well, through microtransactions and whatnot.
I have less of a problem with them if they're holiday events that come back every year, particularly if the rewards associated with that event stick around year to year, or are available elsewhere after the fact. Look at WoW's holiday events, for example. Everything for each holiday is available and relatively easily accessible every year, except for the yearly Winter Veil gifts (which are still available, but at a low drop from a daily boss). No matter what year you start playing the game, if you do a holiday event, you can pick up any reward you want, it'll just take more effort to earn everything if you come in later.
What was the first game to do this? What other examples are there of games pulling this shit? I think this trend also encompasses limited time microtransactions as well, like the compendiums for Dota 2 or the war chests for Starcraft 2.

If I had to guess, it probably started from Hearthstone. There were these game modes with special rules much like you described that were around for a certain time only. Like you said, it was fine for a F2P game, but this shit is ridiculous. It's probably to keep players 'hooked' so they dedicate their time to one game in particular. I recognize this scheme, because I play Warframe.

I think the poll was successful enough for them to decide to bring it back on occasion. They stated that they figured it would work best if it came and went because player engagement dropped off pretty quickly after the first couple months, and there was less of a point in keeping it around permanently if the players who were interested dropped to such a low population over time. Which is about the only time I can argue that a limited time game mode makes sense, I think, when it becomes something of a competition. Turn it on, let players compete to see who does the best this time, turn it off, repeat.

Blizzard started it with their tavern brawls in hearthstone I think, which were just fun little 4 day events that occurred each week and let them explore new gameplay concepts and gave players an easy free pack a week. While those usually wore out their welcome by the time the four days was up, the more recent way this stuff has been done is truly despicable, just a way for blizzkikes and other devs to temporarily reinflate their playerbase.
508c68 No.14785423
>>14785395
It really wouldn't hurt anything to let players challenge each other to friendly Tavern Brawls at any time. Just like friendly duels, no rewards or anything (apart from the XP you get for leveling your heroes which is purely for cosmetics after level 10), you'd just select whatever brawl you wanted from a list and have fun with it. I have no idea why they wouldn't do that, it wouldn't take away from the main game any more than friendly duels already do, and I'm sure it would take very little coding to add in. I dunno if there are any statistics out there of how many games of each type players play, but I doubt that friendly games are very popular overall.
Considering how many complaints I've seen when certain brawls make a return, this could also be a good reason to make some events limited time. In case your event turns out to not really be all that fun, it can be over and done with quickly and replaced with something potentially better the following week.

Just look at games like Animal Crossing and Splatoon. You play the game according to the game's schedule, not your own. The devs have their own idea of how and when you should play, and if you deviate from that then fuck you.
It was always a thing with nip devs that they know whats right, not the player. I never even thought about it until I read some Jap devs shittalking western devs for making gamemodes "always accessible."
If anything I would say the western devs have appropriated the Japanese style, but managed to do it as jewishly as possible. Adding game modes for a time, and then removing them permanently, is just a logical step forward on anti-consumer policy.

This is it, actually. Riot wants the default mode to be the one that's played because LoL matches don't take 40+ minutes each because it makes an interesting game. It takes that long because that's how they keep you hooked. They make you sit through all that time so that when it's over you feel like you've invested too much time to stop playing. Then after doing this you feel like "Well I already put all my free time into it, might as well spend money on skins."
URF killed this seedy dynamic. URF makes the game fun and the matches 15-30 minutes as opposed to 40+. It also killed the tilted meta where the best characters in the game were the most expensive ones, so without any reason to drop $10 on the newest champion, you'd just use whatever and see how the mechanics of URF make the old dustbin champions suddenly extremely powerful. They stopped it because it turned their whole business model on it's head and because Riot Games would rather be Riot Game, they couldn't have that.

Just ignore it? You can't; you'd get slapped in the face with a reminder every single day when you have to eat the old, inferior version of the cereal.
