With Dragon Quest XI on the horizon and looking better and better every time I see something about it; I have to wonder, are the previous games worth going back and visiting? I've only played Dragon Quest Builders thus far. Do the games' stories connect or is it like Final Fantasy where they're all separate?

The first 3 is the Loto trilogy, the next 3 games are the Zenithian trilogy, everything afterwards is standalone.
The only mainline games I'd avoid is 2 and 9. 2 because it's plain dogshit and I regret playing it and 9 because it's a huge ass timesink.

Nah, play the first trilogy because 3 is widely considered the masterclass of JRPG's and one bad game out of the trilogy shouldn't spoil it. Play 1, read up on 2, then play 3.
As for which versions, the SNES version of 1 through the 1+2 collection that got fan translated and the fan translated 3. 4 is kinda fucked because as far as I know it has no fan translation and the DS version got memed to hell and back, pirate the DS version in that case. Play the PS2 fan translated version of 5, and the SNES fan translation of 6.
Dragon Quest 7 is very murky because the PS1 and 3DS versions have improvements and tradeoffs, but I personally went with the 3DS version despite the meme translation, obviously pirate it. 8 3DS version with the orchestra music+censorship undone mod on 3DS, otherwise the plain PS2 version is fine. DQ 10 is an MMO us gaijin cna't even play.

2 isnt bad. That anon probably got his shit kicked in at that cave before the final area. Its better than the first so if you like the first one there's no reason not to play the second. Also I would recommend the game boy color versions. They're pretty much the same as the NES ones but with less grinding. Also play the SNES version of 3.
