Do not mention this game to me. It was a pathetic attempt at a sequel. It wouldn't be half bad if it weren't for the sluggish player movement. And, for some reason, with vsync turned on, save load times take up to a minute on my modern machine, and I am not the only one with this complaint.

Quake isn't really like Unreal in any sense aside from maybe the gunplay. It's the levels are entirely disconnected from each other and only follow a vague theme per episode. They're also pretty abstract and clausterphobic. Nothing looks as though it has any clear purpose or is part of any real structure. This isn't bad at all, I really enjoy Quake. I suppose a lot of community content and stuff like Arcane Dimensions is much closer to Unreal.
I haven't played a lot of Quake 2 though. That didn't really hold my attention.

On the contrary, I played it to completion and was disappointed most of the way. Retrokids flock to Unreal because they want to trace Cliffy B's lineage back and a SP FPS is an easy to ingest experience, it's very popular with them. Quake 2 multi-player was fun as hell, though, especially with mods like Lithium where you had the grappling hook and runes like double damage, double movement speed, double fire rate, half damage, vampire, etc. The native levels were all you needed. I rarely ever played custom levels.

Stupid kids take sides with classic games as if it was a console war. They will say Doom was the epitome of multiplayer shooters, and shit on Quake 2 was just a sluggish campaign.
The truth is that year after year, people couldn't wait to move on and progress from Doom to Doom 2, to Quake and Quake 2, then Half-Life and UT. Quake 2 had incredible autism on its side: you were supposed to play on like 2 maps and using really about 3 weapons. Eventually you would settle for 1 map, 1 weapon. It never got more obsessive than that.

Unreal didn't really come into its own until UT. Unreal on its own was a pretty big pile of meh.
Next year once UT99 turns 20 though, it's fucking on.

I grew up with those games you listed, and remember liking them. Playing them later made me like some more than others and realize that some have flaws that are hard to ignore. Eventually you come to terms that the games just weren't very good in the first place, but some were pretty great.

Brand loyalty is a thing, it's why consolefaggotry exists in the first place. I remember shitloads of Unreal vs. Quake arguments in high school, so there's definitely people that fell into one camp more than the other.
