I don't even remember what the RPGcodex review talked about, aside from sperging about the "what is the nature of a man" line from Torment. However I do starkly remember pirating the game, selecting the race and the class that both clearly state they make me a pariah, and nobody batting an eye. Also abysmal fucking writing.

I did the same. Either remove the option, or actually write something that matches what the description says. Even Sacred did this better, as playing as a demon would mean that peasants would flee from you. I could tolerate abysmal writing if the game was better, but the combat did not work well at all, especially for how much you have to do. Normally when a game has such an obvious weak point like the combat system, they would try to downplay it and allow you to either skip combat through skill checks, or not put so much in there.

I played it.

It's improved from the first, though that's not an achievement. But role-playing wise, the same problems remain. Stoic is still "say nothing" 90% of the time, you can still have every disposition (peaceful and cruel, shady and honest), skill checks are still way too easy to pass because the thresholds are low and your team's skills add to yours. Every dialogue option is open to you because of all these factors, except the hard condition ones (like gotta be a specific class), which makes the game too easy.

The writing kinda blows, I'm not invested in the main quest at all. The side quests are better, lots of different paths/methods, but they're kind of all moot because you can talk your way out of almost anything since your party as a collective is good at everything. The only way to enjoy this game is with house rules because the game itself will not keep you from doing whatever the fuck you want to do at all times.

There's less purple prose than there was in the first but there still is a lot. Game tries hard to immerse you with metaphors and comparisons, but most of them miss the mark (too forced) and have the opposite effect (apparently Berath's smile is like a "rotten pumpkin caving in itself", what the fuck?) Fucking backer characters and tombs are gone and that's a good thing, backer content is always cancerous. The first game had a lot of Elven pseudo-Welsh peppered about, in this game it's Vailian pseudo-Italian. It's annoying as fuck because it is unashamedly pseudo-Italian, they just changed some letters. People say "bazzo" instead of "cazzo" and "aimico" instead of "amico". It's so fucking lazy and it kills the immersion. Also, all the romances are bisexual like in Dragon Age 2.

Combat is better this time around, buffs are actually useful, multiclassing and subclasses are good additions, and all skills are per encounter, except some "ultimates" I guess that are per rest. But it's too easy. I'm not breaking a sweat on veteran. It would be fun if it were harder.

Character creation is stupid. Attributes are still retarded, might still increases damage both physical and magical and also healing, making it the best stat in the game and a priority on every character, and the interaction between attributes and classes still often makes no sense (barbarians need a lot of intellect because Carnage AoE is affected by it, for example). Might especially is so retarded, because might dialog skill checks are all about how strong you are, so all your characters, magic geeks included, will always be buff superhumans unless you want to suck.

BGM is forgettable, graphics are pretty good.

Might be worth a pirate, but D:OS2 beats it out of the water.

I dunno if I'd say DrawAnon's is better, really. It's more of a lateral/subjective move. They just sort of made the expressions a slight bit less expressive, made the heads a bit smaller, and sharpened the jawlines to be the same across all of them.

Thank you for the writeup. As with PoE there really is nothing to the game that would make anyone want to play it. It's mediocre, stale garbage peppered with little nuggets of liberal feces on top. It is no KOTOR 2, Mask of the Betrayer, New Vegas or Alpha Protocol, that's for certain. I still marvel at Sawyer's business acumen, at not only having chased all his writing talent away (and not just Avellone), but pissing them off so much Avellone would come out and speak against them, thus further guaranteeing nobody with a shred of competence will ever work for Obsidian ever again.

I do wonder what their next step is, because I don't think PoE 2 will sell nearly as much as the first one, and Obsidian clearly have no talent around to make something that would make people notice them again.

Get fucked. I played the game from start to finish, constantly expecting it to get better, but no, it's the same boring garbage from start to finish. Writing is awful and on par with a high schooler that thinks using uncommon words and being long-winded equals good writing. Plot is uninteresting bullshit with plenty of plotholes and only serves as a vehicle to drag you through the whole gameworld, which wouldn't be that big of an issue if the gameworld wasn't such a bland setting devoid of anything of interest. From what I remember, Might is essential for every character. It is a combination of physical strength and magical power. In other words, a warrior wielding a greatsword and a mage who can barely even lift a wand will both have fuck-high Might stats, because EVERY form of damage REQUIRES you to pump Might. They effectively made a stat that every character had to dump half of their points into.

It was just one of the utterly retarded design decisions that plagued PoE from its very conception. Basically, every facet of PoE's combat system was designed by someone with half a brain. The Might issue is just the tip of the iceberg.
