For me i think its Resistance. Seeing someone on twitter gushing about the psp game i was reminded this series is now 5 games deep and i picked up the ones i missed and replayed them.
Now i love 'weird war 2' as a sub genre, just like weird westerns it takes an iconic setting and injects some strange stuff in there that would make Mike Mignola cream his jeans.
In Resistances case it ties into an interesting plot point we never see. In Resistance Fall of Man the rachett and clank team made a attempt at a Halo alternative for PS3. You are a U.S Marine landing in the UK which has fallen not to the Nazi's but 'The Chimera' humans twisted by a contagious virus that turns them into multi-eyed reptillians that have an innate ability to construct technology far more advanced than the tech of humanity circa 1935.
Its later revealed that the virus' origins are the Tunguska Event where something happened in the wilderness of northern Russia. Resistance 3 even shows an animatic/motion comic while the disc installs showing the virus spread and some russian peasants start to turn into the primary ghoul forms, assembling nightmare machines out of pre commie russian tech and dragging terrified towns folk into these vats to mutilate and mutate them to create the mature chimera foot soldiers. Not unlike the images at the end credits of RE4 showing the cult infest the town with Las Plagas over time rather than overnight.
We know from 2 onwards that some Russians fought and got out. But we never touch on it too much and i really think it would be a neat, far more bleak prequel. You can't stop them, only escape with shitty WW1 firearms and survivalist bullshit INNAFROZENWOODS.
Granted of course i am a fucking videogame cryptid nobody believes exists and i genuinely like this series for its tone, art style and retarded guns so i doubt many on /v/ actually like Resistance, but what game would you like to see a prequel to? Fallout 1? The last of Us? Lost Planet? Go nuts.

I guess I should expand on this.
Maybe work as part of a team making expeditions to xen with the main goal being capturing xenos while field testing all the new fun weapons and equipment, some of it just doesn't work or malfunctions if used improperly.
Coming back to earth every so often to deal with random weird shit going on in the labs or maybe even getting rotated to different private labs entirely.
I just feel like the half life world suffers from a lot of telling without showing, it could use some genuine explaining for shit.

Fallout. Pre-Fallout America seems to have a fuck ton of interesting backstabbery going on, and that interests me more than the wasteland at this point. Set it leading up to the bombs dropping for maximum effect that way it will end in the most appropriate way possible. Sequel could be right after the bombs dropped for a unique take on the hellish free for all that followed the nukes + the heavier amounts of radiation that would make it play quite differently.

seriously though, it's not that making a prequel is a bad idea in itself, it's just that most of the time we see prequels to games that didn't need one and so the whole thing feels forced, because developers usually go "oh we need to show the players how this character got this and why is like that" and they come out with something stupid and definitely not well thought.
Other times prequels are simply bad games.

Resistance Retribution is the french resistance taking out conversion centers and discovering chimera are taking human females to make a new creature called a siren.
Resistance 2 is set after 1 where the war reaches america and now spinners replace the now destroyed conversion centers and they coccoon rural towns to make new grims
Resistance Burning Skies is about an american firefighter in a town getting caught up in this as the some men in black appear to have full knowledge of the chimera, long before murrca knew about them
Resistance 3 is set in 1959 and most chimera are feral and the remaining militarised ones are trying to wipe out humans now immunised to the virus and terraforming the world into a new ice age.
I hate to be a lorefag but theres some interesting story across them all, especially in the files hidden around.

I'd be happy with a Knights of the Old Republic prequel incorporating all of the cool pre-disney stuff. Zayne Carrick. The Mandalorian Wars, Revan/Malak/Exile together as Jedi, the Sunriders etc. You could be a newly knighted Jedi whose former master is killed in battle, and you can choose to ally yourself with Revan and become a Jedi crusader, stay true to the council and not partake in the war, leave the Jedi entirely and do your own thing, or ally with the Mandalorians.

Have the opening set before the bombs fall, but not like Fallout 4. You get several hours of gameplay before the bombs fall, where you get to know the various people that will form groups later. You live your life, your choices setting up your options and the story going forward. For example yeah you could screw over this guy, he deserves it, but if you don’t he has your back the entire rest of the game. After plenty of world building, after you finally start to see a glimmer of hope in your life, the bombs fall and cast everything into atomic fire.
The rest of the game takes place in the freshly ruined city and neighborhoods. Radiation is everywhere, the weather is unreliable and everyone is at each other’s throats. In traditional Fallout fashion you can choose whether to be a positive force in the world, or a brutal radier/dictator. Do you work hard to produce food and help others survive, or do you enslave, raid, and conquer?

It is the main plot of the game. In the game itself, you play as the kid who saves everyone.
But a new game taking place during the rogue A.I arcade machine capturing people and keeping them in the virtual world as trophies would make a nice plot, as well as having good gameplay controlling the soon-to-be-captured, or someone who escaped to warn others.

I guess that's sorta the logical progression of how Bethesda completely missed the point of how Fallout was supposed to be about how society would form in a world that had forgotten about our world and instead just blew their load circlejerking constantly about the old world that had no relevance whatsoever to the new one.
Note that you could have a Fallout game set before the great war in Europe that would be identical in spirit to Bethesda's games, since Europe had been a wasteland for decades before the great war.

I just finished reading The Fall of Reach the other day, and that sorta broke Halo Wars for me. Halo Wars has SPARTANs in modern (2550s-era), energy shielded MJOLNIR twenty years before mankind had successfully reverse-engineered energy shielding, and involves mankind making first contact with The Flood and uncovering a Forerunner construction for the first time… to no lasting effect whatsoever.
