13cdaa No.14752705

Anon from screenshot thread made me play daggerfall after all these years finally.

And I'm honestly surprised how not shit it is. Atmosphere is top notch, and visuals scratch that retro itch I was having for a while. Atmosphere is top notch.

What bothers me though, is that I can't find any fabled procedurally generated dungeons of dread and dispair that this game is famous for.

Am I doing something wrong? I go to red dots on world map that are marked as "dungeons", and there is always some cemetery with one or two tombs containing 2-3 rooms and some weak mobs.

What am I missing?

62066d No.14752766

>>14752705

I don't think the dungeons are actually procedurally generated. As in the game doesn't generate them on the fly like in Minecraft. Rather each dungeon was randomly generated by a developer and then saved.

There's an enormous amount of dungeons in the game just do a few guild quests and they'll send you to a harpy's nest at some point.

There be thousands, you're bound to run into one, the entrance/exit usually looks similar to the initial one you come out of and you're bound to end up traveling to one along some quest line eventually. Speaking of the initial dungeon, it's one of the smallest you'll encounter.

>>14752766

Yes, that's how it was done, everyone will see the same ones.

When you get quests to go to specifically named dungeons, searching their names on the map will allow you to quick travel to them. These are the 'fabled' dungeons that people speak of.

1c0499 No.14753232

Many of the dungeons are not visible on the world map until you get a quest to visit them or find a map as loot. You kind of have to ask around for work or join a guild to get into the deeper dungeons.

>>14753226

You don't need one. You can download Daggerfall from Bethesda's website and install it on DosBox or you can get the auto setup from uesp that installs dosbox and daggefall with dos32a and a few unofficial patches and quality-of-life mods.

Interesting to see a noob wielding a dwaren weapon. Did you seek it out or stumble upon it? You almost seem competent.

But here's a little hint for the bigger dungeons: at every 3 or 4-way intersection, click on it and leave a note to tell you which direction the entrance is. You'll thank yourself when you reach the quest target and need to head back.

You can write notes in the map screen by clicking on a spot. You'll see it blink and there will be a box to type in whatever you want. It's also useful to make notes on a blacksmith that is repairing your stuff, since it takes them at least 24 hours and you'll want to roam around and do stuff while you wait.

If you havent been making notes in this dungeon, just forget it unless you happen to come across the entrance again. Then start.

>>14753293

Any enchanted item you need to bring to a mages guild to identify. You don't need to be a member to identify items. Once it's identified, it will be just like in Morrowind: it's either a constant effect buff, a spell on strike, or it puts a spell in your book to cast. Enchanted items have limited charges and cannot be repaired, so my advice is to save it for when you need it, especially if it's a spell from the destruction school… will be helpful later when you start to encounter vampires and liches.

Finally, the main game-breaking bug you want to be prepared for is the saves are prone to getting corrupted. Best thing is to find and install dos32a. If you used DaggerfallSetup.exe, then that means you already have it installed and don't have to worry. As for when you start up and the game doesn't seem to be running, alt+enter to bring it into windowed mode, that will usually kick it out of black screen and then you can fullscreen it again. It's actually a dosbox issue, not a daggerfall issue.

Really not sure. Never used the GoG version. It probably is the autoinstall with dos32a, though. I hope you didn't pay for this since you can get it off Bethesda's official website for free.

Also one more thing while I'm thinking about it. Press ctrl+F11 to bring cycles down. Keep clicking until they're down to 40%. If you've noticed you can't strafe or run or swim above ground, it's because the cycles are too high. This fixes it.

It is entirely possible to get fucked based on how the dungeon was generated. I had a time where the game spawned the item I needed for a quest in a room that was under the rest of map, guarded by an inexplicably flying Slaughterfish that got itself stuck on an altar. I'd have never gotten it without using cheat tools to move my character in there, and then teleporting back.

The combination of that, plus the fact that every dungeon starts to look the same after a while, makes fetch quests in Daggerfall absolutely atrocious. I won't even do them. If someone wants me to do a quest, it better be to kill someone or something, not to get a fucking Daedra Heart or whatever. Preferably in town. If I'm going into a hell hole, it's because I'm trying to loot the place of my own volition.

>>14754563

The main story dungeons are all handcrafted. The other generic ones aren't, true, but there's so many of them that I doubt even an autist who's been playing the same game since its release in the 90s has seen all of them.
