After playing Sky Rogue on a switch, with motion controls, a barebones indie game but with surprisingly fun gameplay, I got myself into the mood for more dogfights.
So, have you played anything lately?

Project Sylpheed was an amazing title on 360 and sadly underappreciated. It had a branching plot, tons of optional (and often hidden) objectives, and a very diverse arsenal.

I'm still annoyed at the mission where you have to fly through the tunnels to stop the V2 launch. I figured I'd stop annoyed while playing it and I haven't had a chance to go back to it.

I beat House of the Dying Sun in VR. It was janky because I own a DK2 and my computer is pretty ass, but it breathtaking nevertheless. Webm related, but isn't mine.
I loved that the last mission was the inverse of the last mission of Homeworld 2, where you're trying to ensure that you finish glassing a planet instead of preventing it from being glassed. You even have the surviving population counter and everything.

Speaking of Ace Combat, is there a particular order in which to tackle the games? I haven't touched it at all and I've been meaning to get into it.

Why aren't there more games where you can do this? I want endings where I see the enemy be completely slaughtered.

We're basically two generations or more removed from anyone who has seen the practice of total war.
What used to be routine in warfare is now thought of as atrocities.

And it has been done, but thanks to the Harmony Gold Jews no Macross game will ever get released in the West. Go look up the PSP Macross Ace Frontier, or the PS2 and PS3 Macross games.

Nigger those are pretty standard third person action games with robots/planes.
I meant ace combat style when in plane mode turning to mech warrior when into robot mode

Yeah, that's exactly what those games are. Each of the three modes has specific advantages and disadvantages that encourages you to use them like you would a proper variable fighter.

Basically you have the old early access release on steam and Project Mirai on PS4
Project Mirai is the first half of the early access release but with some pretty consequent upgrades, so if you only get the PC release you're not getting the graphics and gameplay upgrades but if you're getting the PS4 one you're not getting half the game content .

Project Wingman: https://rb-d2.itch.io/wingman
It's a really small team; one dev, one music composer and a few voice actors but nonetheless manages to capture the arcade-ish Ace Combat feeling.
Also compatible with VR as of the latest update, if you've got a set.
