I keep having tactics ogre recommended to me but the name sounds like it won't appeal to me; I prefer focusing on SRPGs/TRPGs with good stories and characters, the combat and whatnot is important but on the same level of story and whatnot, rather than being more important. Tactics Ogre just sounds meme-y, can someone give a preferably spoiler-free reason why someone like me should be interested in tactics ogre?

Aesthetic is also important to me too; it partially determines how fun the combat is.

The story in Tactics Ogre is very good, it's similar to FFT's story. The series got it's name from two songs from Queen's second album. "Ogre Battle" and "March of the Black Queen".

Why would I market an obscure game that came out a quarter of a century ago, only in Japan, and will never get another release? Even the fan translation is 14 years old.

Vandal Hearts 2 is the best tactics game.

With a name like that, I would have expected it to be much more modern. It fits in well with modern Japan's hamfisted attempts to make neets fuck 3DPD whores instead of being alone with their waifus.

Tactics Ogre etc. are more of a fun type of srpg. The art is beautiful and it does the alignment system pretty well.

But due to the high variety of units and optional grinding any difficulty in the game is non existent. It's still pretty fun to fuck around with a team of 6 dragons.

For actual gameplay srpg I have to give it to the games made by Sting.

They are exceptional in tuning the difficulty and adding mechanics that heighten the gameplay without making it obnoxious.

I would recommend Yggdra union or Gungnir on a difficulty above normal for some real good tactical play.

For a newcomer I would certainly recommend Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together.

That one is the most polished and will ease you into it.

As a tip, don't make the majority of your characters archers at the start, it will be raining on the first map making you miss a lot.

PSP FFT has an extra class and more cameo characters and a less stiff translation if you don't mind the medieval english. It also has a problem with animations being really slow but there are romhacks to fix it.

Currently playing Children of Zodiarcs, pretty much went under the radar for a lot of people, too much gimmicky shit and story seems was apparently written by tumblr, but seeing this through.

I am playing through Front Mission 1 on DS. I started it years back on an SNES emulator but never finished it.

Its easier than I remembered, almost every single fight so far has been a completely one sided steam roll. I guess the UCS campaign is the one made for experienced people

Depends on what you would prefer. Tactics Ogre has a greater emphasis on tactics and FFT is more about customizing your characters via the job system until you break the game.

Blackguards 1 is really fun and deserves more attention. The sequel is shit though.

It's been years since I've played that game last, but I think they just give you extra bonus experience.

I know they do, but I'm getting the feeling even saving most of them is wildly impractical on hard. Vika is the only flyer in your group because you can't use Jill in that chapter, and the wyvern rider will kill a few of them before she can transform. Attempting to shove a unit into the swamp to block him is more or less impossible because the rider's range can attack either of the two eastern hostages.
