Thought this might make an interesting thread topic; think of an atmosphere or mood a game has given you, try to describe it as best you can, list other scenes in games(or other media) that has imparted this same feeling and see if any anons get the same vibe. Maybe we can even start giving names to the ones that anons share in common.

I'll start:

>American desert, dark night, city lights in the distance, street lights lining the highway, diner in the middle of nowhere.

>Middle of the night shopping center, streetlights

>Space themed arcade, dark night, streetlights,

It's not something I've seen in media since the 80s/90s. This feeling was especially prevalent in Duke Nukem 3D and Courage the Cowardly Dog.

It seems to be very dependent on lighting, particularly contrasted with dark nights and though I don't think it's a pre-requisit I usually get the vibe from things that take play in or near a desert. Many mid-late 90s CG also gave off this vibe, probably due to the limited CG lighting techniques back then.

I've never understood what it was called or how to replicate it, but it's something that always lingers in mind when I visit certain locations.

Other games that I've gotten this feeling from:

>Vampire Masquerade Bloodlines

>Fallout 2(especially New Reno)

>Fallout New Vegas

>Deus Ex

>Fuck tons of DOS games

Pics as related as I could make them from a quick google search.

Does anyone understand this mood or is it just me?

fuck

Anyway as I was saying, It typically takes place in desert cities like Las Vegas, LA, Reno, ect. Or the outskirts of those cities.

Though I don't think deserts are a pre-requisite to this, the just seem to be a common factor.

Another part of this vibe is the city. It doesn't have to take place in a city, but should have one in the distance; almost to remind you that there's an entire world of people that exist and carry on without your involvement. In fact I tend to get this feeling in locations outside a city far into the desert more than I do inside a city.

Nigger I got exactly the same. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is also one of those games that have that strange mood, and OP if you haven't played that one I highly recommend it. Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus too but in a different matter.

>constant night

>dark but not edgy

>cartoony/anime but not over the top

>slightly festive but also slightly tense

>everyone is agitated but not too much to skip a drink or idle chat about random stuff

You know kinda like half-way to Halloween but real and not full-on Tim Burton kid-friendly-gothic atmosphere?

Shit's hard to describe.

The town in Torchlight 1 conveys it to a degree, as well as Eternal Poison here and there.

Vanillaware games usually have a pace or two with this mood going on as well.

If disgaea 1 wasn't full on whacky self-aware meta anime, it would probably have some of it too.

Irl closest thing I can think of is tourist quarter in some Asian country, like Thailand, where it's not exactly a holiday, but since everyone is on vocation, spirits are high and everything is bright and colorful.

It's such a weird contrast that stands out to me, since most games put corpses and such in darker places. I don't see it done very often.

Stranger's Wrath has a more overgrown industrial kind of atmosphere to me. It's pretty unique but reminds me a bit of STALKER or the village in RE4. Maybe due to the mostly rust colored palette.

I recall Spy Fox 3: Operation Ozone having the main hub being some little spot in the desert at night with a donut diner, a bowling alley, and some trailers if memory serves. Been a while since I ever played it though, and as a 2001 release, it's not exactly a recent example of a game using it.

I always thought the first max payne captures this feel pretty well. I spent a lot of time when I was young in New York City, Brooklyn, and all over Queens in general and a lot of the game felt familiar in a good way. When I play it I don't have nostalgia for the early 2000s, I have nostalgia for my childhood. The graffiti, advertisements, the game hits it on the head pretty hard. IIRC Remedy went to New York and took a lot of photos of everything for the games design.

I have one for you guys:

>gothic castles and aesthetics

>gothic organ rock

>constant themes are about what it means to be a demon or human

>lots of occult lore

If you want to take it even further, all of the games with this theme seem to be made by Capcom. RE4 took place in-part in a gothic castle, same as with Haunting Ground and all of the DMC games. The amount of occult lore found in these games is also astounding. Haunting Ground is nothing but obscure occult references, with living Golems, obscure terms like Azoth, and alchemy. Bayonetta for instance has a written angelic language in the game and I shit you not, it is actually based off of Enochian language found in the real world. Someone at Capcom/Platinum has an insane amount of knowledge concerning the occult and occult items.

This is because game designers used to actually go outside as kids and young adults and at some point spent long hours driving across the vast distances of the US. They then tried to capture that wonderous and adventurous feeling.

Modern game designers only know what the inside of a starbucks or their boyfriends asshole looks like, and have to type "forest" into various stock photo websites.

Another playstation classic. I think Playstation games typically all had unique atmospheres because the console was powerful but not so much that you could let the graphics do all of the legwork. So atmosphere was heavily invested by the art and sound teams. You go back and play these games and you're almost shocked by how actually ugly they are. But the atmosphere is as good as ever. You don't remember those games having such awful graphics partly because the atmosphere was overwhelming your senses. That is why games like Bubsy 3d were so powerfully awful. You only remember the shit graphics.

I'm a really big fan of that isometric, sprite based but still handmade looking 3D that you tend to find in earlier RTS games and stuff like the Sims 1. Maybe it's not that it's rare, but it's definitely faded out in favour of that Dreamworks-ripoff, Unity engine, pump-up-the-bloom type bullshit like in Yooka Laylee or the Spyro remaster.
